Description
Patented lian. i8, i935 DRY SEAVEB Charles Caise, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application February 8, 1937, Serial No. 124,730
16 claims. (C1. sci- 43) My invention relates to the art of safety razors and more particularly to those known as dry shavers.
Primarily the invention has for an object to provide a dry shave razor of a simple, 4inexpensive construction by the use of which a close shave may be had without danger of cutting oneself.
Further, it is an object to provide a motor driven razor the cutting edge ofthe blade of which is held parallel to the skin and outer con" tour of the razor, a position in which the razor cannot chafe the skin.
Further, it is an object to provide a razor of the type stated in which the cutting edge of the blade is prevented from injuring the skin by means of a. very ne non-corrosive wire grating substantially paralleling the cutting edge of the blade and extending at right angles to the same.
Other objects willin part be obvious and in part be hereinafter set forth. A
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends the invention further resides in those novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter rst fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which s Fig. 1 is a magnified view in front elevation of a razor embodying vthe invention, parts being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. '1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view, the cover being removed.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view on a of the blade carrier. l
Fig. 6 is a top plan view, on a reduced scale, of the guard plate head.
In the drawing in which like numbers of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, l represents the handle in which a suitable. electric rotary vmotor (not shown) drives a shaft 3 having an eccentric pin '4. The handle I is threaded at 2 to receive the threaded end of the tubular shank 5 in whose hollow 6 the blade reduced scale moving arm 25 is located. The' arm 25 has a.
concentric recess to receive the eccentric pin A whereby rotation of shaft 3 imparts a rotary motion to the lower end of arm 25. The shank 5 carries the guard plate head 1 which on its front and back sides i's provided with trough like passages 8 containing grating bars 9 spaced relatively a substantial distance apart. The head 1 has a pocket I0 in its top and is provided with Vblade guide surfaces I I over which the thin ilexible wafer blade 30 projects.
'I'he side ends I2 of the head 1 extend upwardly a suitable distance to support the cover I5.
Slots I3 in the head 1 serve to yreceive the wings 26 depending from the underside of the blade carrier plate 24.
` The cover I5 includes veryne wire gratings I1 and turned under portions Iii the former extending over the openings 8 while the latter clip around the edges I4. of the head 1 (see Figs.. 1 and 2).
Thexcover I5 is held in place by any suitable means, as for instance spring ngers I8 and lugs I9.
The blade carrier plate 24 has the arm 25 hereinbefore referred to and also the wings 26, the
latter having pivot bearing holes 21 to receive the bearing portions 28 of pivot pins screwed at 29 into the'ends vI2 of the head 1.
The blade 30 may be of the well known wafer type (Gillette, Probak, etc.) and is slotted to it over the rib or protuberance 22. 'Ihe blade is held down, in itsvbowed shape, on the plate 24 by means of a blade pressing cap plate 20 (also slotted at `2| to t overthe member 22) and screws and washers 23 or in any other suitable way. x
The shapes of the various part's are so designed that the cutting edges of the blade will lie approximately parallel to the" gratings I1 during their cutting .movements, and close to those gratings I1.
The razor is used in the same way as the well known Gillette razor.
The rotary motion of shaft 3 is converted into motion in the direction of the two arrows a and b in Fig. 4, i. e., a left and right movement (effecting a draw cut) and a front and back movement (effectingV a chopping cut); the front and backmovement of the .blade is very slight in practice, about one-sixteenth of an inch or so.V due to the leverage between pivotal axis 28-28 and the top and bottom of the member 25, while the movement above such axis is considerably less (about half as much).
thought that the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art.
