1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in blank paper receptacles, the primary object of which is to provide improved means for securing the corners or ends of the 5 receptacle in such a manner as to prevent accidental collapsing of the receptacle when it is once set up for use. i
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
Figure l is a plan View of a blank from which the box embodying the features of the present invention is formed.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the box.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a corner por tion of the box with the adjacent ends'of a side 2 and end walLseparated.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure l showing the application of the invention, the adjacent ends of a side and-end wall being locked together.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a band used for binding cakes shown in open position.
Figure 7 represents a fragmentary side elevational view showing the ends of the cake band attached.
Figure 8 represents a cross sectional view taken substantially on line 8-8 of Figure 7.
Figure 9 represents a fragmentary perspective view of one end of the cake band. t With reference more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that the box is somewhat conventional in construction, being formed from a single rectangular blank of pasteboard, cardboard or the. like and folded on longitudinal and transverse fold lines toprovide a bottom 5, and side walls 6 and 1.
By slitting the blank transversely and in alinement with the transverse folds of the blank inwardly from the longitudinal edges of the blank 9 1130 the longitudinal fold lines of the blank, there is provided for each side wall 1, at each end of the side wall a fiap 8 adapted to be folded inwardly at right-angles to the related side wall for disposition against either the inner or outer face of an adjacent side wall 6. In the present instance, I have shown the fiap- 8 overlapping an adjacent end of a side wall 6 at the outer side of the box or side wall of the box. (See Figures 4 and 5.) I
'According to the present invention, each flap 8 is provided with a substantially V-shaped notch 55 one side of which extends inwardly from an inner 1935, Serial No. 18,438
corner of the fiap whereby to provide the flap 8'- with a locking tongue 9 that may be folded relative to the flap 8 on a diagonal crease line I9.
Each side wall 6 at each end thereof is provided with a diagonal slit ll through which the 5 tongue 9 of an adjacent flap 8 passes for locking the fiap 8 in parallel overlapping relation with one end of the side wall 6 as shown to advantage in Figure 1.
As is apparent, when the fiap 8 is disposed to the outer side of the side wall 6, the locking tongue 9 passes through a slit l l inwardly of the box; when the flap 8 is disposed to the inner side of the side wall 6, the tongue 9 is passed through the slit I l to the outer side of the box.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that in so forming the flap 8 the substantially triangular locking tongue 9, and the side walls 9 of the diagonal slit II for reception of the tongues 9, that the side and side walls at the corners of the box may be securely locked together, and in a minimum amount of time requiring but a minimum amount of effort. Further the fiap 8 provides a reinforcement for the side walls 6 of the box as also do the locking tongues 9.
It will be observed in Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9 that the novel fastening means can be employed in conjunction with the cake band, said cake band consisting of an elongated strip of thick paper or preferably cardboard which is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced oblique slits I6 in one end portion thereof, each of the slits being curved in a substantially vertical direction at its upper end as at H.
The opposite end of the strip 5 is provided with a V-shaped cut l8 at its upper edge slightly inwardly from its extremity, this out being provided with side edges Iii-20. The side edge 29 has a continuation of its out downwardly as at 2| to terminate at the point 22, from where and the corner 23 of this end portion of the strip the crease 24 is formed on which the fiap 25 is folded to assume the position shown in Figure 9 when it is to be inserted through one of the slits Hi to connect the ends of the band about a cake. Obviously, when the end portion of the strip l5 last described has been inserted through one of the slits Hi the fiap regains the position substantially shown in Figure 6, in which position the ends of the band are substantially locked together against accidental disconnection.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention .as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a flexible article of the character stated; means for securing a pair of side walls together at their ends, one of said end portions having a slit therein, the other end portion provided with a substantially square-shaped area for overlapl0 ping the slit end portion, said area having its edge formed with a substantially V-shaped notch therein at the edge portion adjacent said slit end portion. said V-shaped notch having one side thereof on the diagonal extending from one free corner of the area to the inner end of the side edge merging with the slit end portion, the other side of the V-shaped notch extending inwardly from substantially the mid-point of said diagonal to a point on said side edge of the area inwardly of a line drawn transversely through the area at the apex of said V-shaped notch, the remaining portion of the edge portion of the area adjacent the slit end and within the confines of the notch and other diagonal being bendable on the lastmentioned diagonal to permit insertion of the outer end portion of the area through the slit.
