Description

BWAYLAND & L. M. BERRY. Vehicle-Axle Lubrioator.
No. 207.920. Patented Sept. 410,187.78.
Teva' Wz'neJuS-es I 7* N. PETERS, FNuTv-LHHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON, D c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELI WAYLAND AND LARI-HN M. BERRY, SALISBURY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEHICLE-AXLE LUBRICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207.920, dated September 10, 1878; application iiled July 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELI WAYLAND and LARKIN M. BERRY, of Salisbury, in the county of Chariton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in LGast-Iron Lubricating Thimble-Skeins -for Wagons 5 and we do hereby declare-that the followingis a full, clear, and'exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciicatio, and in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of our improved axlc-lubricator and metallic thimbleskein. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective View of the oil or lubricant box cover. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the same.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to certain improvements in vehicle-axle lubricators, wherein metallic lubricating thimble-skeins are employed and it consists in the arrangement of certain parts thereof, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to the axle-arm, upon which iits they thimble-skein B, it being confined thereonV by the headed screw-bolt al, which enters the end of the axlearm A.
By this construction and arrangement of parts the thimble-skein is held steadfastly and rigidly in position, and the loosening and displacement of the skein by reason of jarring is prevented.
In the thirnble-skein B is a longitudinal groove, a2, into which the lubricant or oil may be fed from the box C, into whose bottom it extends, wicking or other like material, b,
placed therein. This method of feeding the oil does it gradually, to prevent waste, Src. The box O islocated on top of skein, in the shoulder or enlarged portion ofthe axle arm or spindle, and, being formed or castas aforesaid, becomes a part of the skein. D is the cover or lid of the lubricant or oil box, provided in its sides or inclosed portion with opposite grooves, c c, terminating into opposite 4entrance-openings, c c. From the inner circumference or side of the box C extend projections or studs d d, which enter the grooves c c in the lid or cover D, through the entranceopenings c' c', as the said cover is being adjusted to its place thereon, and by turning the cover t0 the right until the ends or corners of the grooves c c strike the studs l the cover will be locked in its place, to prevent dirt and sand from sifting into or entering the box, as heretofore, at its only exposed part, (the lid,) even when apparently securely fastened, and also to prevent jarring o of the lid, and the consequent waste of the lubricant.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The oil-box C, supplying lubricant to the thimble-skein B on axle-arm A, havingthe internal studs d, in combination withv the cover D, provided in its sides or v inclosed portion with opposite grooves c, having vertical passages c, adapted as to size for the reception of the internal stud d, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we aftix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ELI WAYLAND. LARKIN M. BERRY.
