UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
HENRY B. SOHOLES, QF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BEDSTEAD AND FIRE-ESCAPE Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,899, dated September 10, 1878 application filed February 21, 1878. V I
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I,HENRY BRIDE ScnoLEs, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to construct a bedstead in such manner that various parts of it may be made available as a fire-escape.
I do this by making parts of the bedstead to wit, the side and end pieces and bottom pieces of the bedsteadin the form of ladders, hinged or linked together, the said sides and end pieces being provided with prongs and recesses to receive and hold the posts, so that these parts or pieces may be combined so as to make a continuous ladder or means by which a safe descent may be efl'ected from the windows of a building in case of fire or other obstruction to the ordinary means of egress.
In the drawings, Figure 1, Plate I, represents a view of a bedstead so constructed; Fig. 2, a horizontal sectional view of the frame of such bedstead; Fig. 3, Plate II, a top view 6, top views of different forms of bottoms of such bedsteads; Fig. 7, the side and end pieces of a bedstead secured to a bed-post extended as a ladder, and connected with one section of bottom shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 8, a bottom of bedstead shown in Fig. 6, made of wire rope, extended as a ladder; Fig. 9, part of the bottom of bedstead shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 10, the side and end pieces of an ordinary frame bedstead connected together. in line with bottom pieces shown in Fig. 4, attached so as to form a means of escape; Fig. 11, two of the bottom pieces shown in Fig. 5, extended as an escape.
In the several figures similar letters indicate similar parts of the bedstead or escape.
A A represent sides of bedstead B B, end pieces; 0, bed-posts w, shoulders of posts to sustain frame; aa, pins connecting end with side pieces, on which they may swing; e,1ockpin to secure frame together DD, bottom pieces; E E, cross -bars to support bottom pieces; it, chains, links, rings, or wire rope to connect bottom pieces 0, pin to secure bottom piece in extension with end and side pieces; a, hooked end of one of bottom pieces; 0 c, footholds of end or side or bottom pieces; on w, projections from side and end pieces made to fit and hold bed-posts in position; I, movable lock-piece; 2, holes for lock-pin c.
I have thus shown a bedstead with side and end pieces jointedtogether or hinged in such way that by taking out the lock-pin c, at one corner, the sides and ends may at once be drawn out inline, while in the operation the bed-posts will drop or fall out of position,'thc one at the end being secured, as shown in Fig.
7, to act as a bar and support of the escape at The bottom pieces may then be the window. attached to the sides and end pieces by the pin 0, and an escape of considerable length will thus be formed.
It is obvious, also, that the end and side pieces may be successively brought into the position of a bedstead-frame, and the bedposts may then be restored to their proper positions, and the whole frame may then be socured together by the lock-pin c, as shown in Fig. 1.
Such bedsteads may be made of wood or iron or of other suitable material having the requisite strength.
I claim as my invention The improved bedstead and fire-escape consisting of sides and ends and bottom made of ladder sections hinged or linked together, substantially as shown and described, said ends and sides being provided with prongs or recesses to receive the posts, as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY B. SOHOLES.
