Description

April 20, 1937. R. BAIRD ET AL BATTERY TERMINAL POST CLAMP Filed May 16, 1936 Invvntmi q W15 mm 6 Afiomcys Patented Apr. 20, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Russell Baird Application May 16,
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a battery terminal post clamp and the object of the invention is to provide a clamp of this character which may be quickly applied to the terminal post of a bat- 5 tery; will provide for a lead to lead contact, will positively engage with the terminal post, and which can be quickly removed without resort to tools.
The invention together with its objects and ad- 10 vantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:-
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the application of the invention, and with parts 5 broken away and shown in section.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the upper portion of the clamp.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the clamp taken substantially on a line 3--3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals it will be seen that the battery terminal post clamp indicated generally by the reference numeral 5, in the preferred embodiment thereof, 5 comprises a socket member having a relatively thick head 6 and a depending skirt 1. Skirt 1 is provided at intervals with slots 8 which permit of a contraction and expansion of the skirt.
The head 6 is diametrically enlarged to project radially beyond the skirt 1 thus presenting a shoulder 9 against which abuts inner and outer slit retaining bands In and II sleeved onto the skirt 1 as will be clear from a study of Figures 1 and 3.
35 In final position the slit Illa in the band I is preferably disposed, and as clearly shown in Figure 3, in a position diametrically opposite to the slit Ila in the band II.
It will be understood that the socket portion 40 of the clamp may be made of any suitable conductive material while the bands l0 and Il may be of iron or other suitable material or if found desirable the bands I0 and I I may be made of a suitable di-electric material or of resilient metal coated with a di-electric material and will in all events be resilient so as to tend to contract the and Alvis Moseley, Texas y,

split skirt 1 of the socket about the battery post 12 in a manner to insure a positive contact of the clamp with the post l2.
Also, in accordance with the present invention there is provided for electrically connecting the clamp with one end of a cable l3 a tube l4 which has an apertured flat end I5 molded in the head 6 of the clamp socket 5 as shown in Figure 2 thus providing a positive connection between the head 6 of the socket clamp 5 and the tube [4. It will of course be understood that the end of the cable [3 may be soldered within the cylindrical end of the tube M or otherwise secured within said end of the tube as found desirable.
It is thought that the construction, utility and advantages of a battery terminal post clamp embodying the features of the present invention will be appreciated without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:--
1. A battery terminal post clamp comprising a socket having a fiat top and an integral slit skirt of yieldable conductive material, said socket being adapted to fit over a battery post, and said skirt being disposed inwardly from the peripheral edge of the top of the socket, and split resilient retaining bands disposed one within the other and sleeved on said skirt, said bands abutting at one edge thereof the portion of said top projecting beyond the periphery of said skirt,
2. A battery terminal post clamp comprising a socket having a flat top and an integral slit skirt of yieldable conductive material, said socket being adapted to fit over a battery post, and said skirt being disposed inwardly from the peripheral edge of the top of the socket, and split resilient retaining bands disposed one within the other and sleeved on said skirt, said bands abutting at one edge thereof the portion of said top projecting beyond the periphery of said skirt, and a tubular member having a cylindrical end for the reception of one end of a cable, and a fiat apertured end secured within the top of said socket.
