- DOCTORv FOR PAPER MAKING AND LIKE MACHINES Filed Jan. 18, 1956 2 Sheet-Sheet 2 ATTORNEY.
i Patented Apr. 20, 1937 l PATENT OFFICE Doc'roaroit PirzgR MAKING AND Lum EINES Frederick William Vickery, London, England Application JanuaryY 18, 1936, Serial No. 59,718 In Great Britain January 16, 1935 s claims. (ci. 92-74) its surface, and to receive'these in an undercut slot in the holder so that the blade can be freed from the holdery only by longitudinal movement. 15 The term blade as used hereinincludes any such enlargements or projections whether integral orv not; and as the enlargements are commonly separate the term lamina is used herein to distinguish the flexible yresilient part of the.
20 blade to which the enlargements are attached.
The present invention aims at the same purposeof preventing the blade from being dislodged under even yan excessive working pressure, and achieves it by making a part o f the holder mov-y 25 able from the end, the blade, that is to say the lamina, or its projections, or the lamina and its projections being normally engaged by the holder.
so that lateral withdrawal is impossible and being freed by an operator beside the machine re- 30 leasing and shifting the movablev part..
d The movable part of the holder may engage withopenings in the lamina, butpreferably the ,lamina is 'formed or vfitted with. projections out-5 standing from its surface as described in my "P former specication above mentioned, and, as
also there described, these either alone -or with the rear edge of the lamina are received in what is irri-effect an undercut or irregular dovetail slot in therli'gidI holder. 1
rSuch, a slot) maybe formed by the putting together of ktwo parts of which the holder'is built, and the blademay be freed by'si-mply separating the two parts to afsuflicient extent, the holder being so constructed that the requisite separawithoutdismantling it, or one of two parts of which the Aslot "is vformed may be notchedtoallow the passage of the projections of the blade, ari'dmoved longitudinally to bring its notches into register with .the projections Awhen the blade` is Kantine,` freed. I, Or one wall of aslotted holder may b" `notchedv opposite the blade projections and a retaining slide maybe provided. in the holder hlch" alsol engagesthe projections and must be tion.
a tion may beleiected from one end of the holderk moved lengthwise from its normal position to free them. Instead of a slide moving-lengthwise a notched rod may be used and be rotated to bring its notches into register with the blade projections. u
These and other embodiments of the invention are described in detail hereinafter, typicalconstructions being illustrated in the accompanying drawings. n
Figure 1 is a cross section on the line I-I of Figure 2, and
Figure 2 a part elevation of one construction; Figures 3 and 4 are cross-sections of another construction on the line III- III of Figure 5 showing the blade held and freed respectively,
and
Figure 5 is a sectional elevation of this construction on the line V--V of Figure 3;
Figure 6 is a cross-section on the line VI-VI of Figure 7, and I' Figure f1 an elevation of a thirdconstruction; Figure 8 is a cross section, and y l Figure 9 a part view of the locking slide of a fourth construction;
Figures 10 to 12 are cross-sections of construc-l tions in which the retaining means' is released by rotation.
Figure 13 is a cross-section on the line XIII- XIII of Figure 14', and l Figure 14 an'elevation of lyet another construcf In Figures 1 and 2 the undercut slotin which .the rear vedge of the lamina I and its projections' 2 Aare received is formed by the two parts 3, 4 of which the rigid holder is built. The part 3 has a. dovetail sliding connection with` the part 4 as indicated, and is preventedfrom sliding while the doctor is in use by a split' pin 5- inserted' through it and the part 4 near one end. The
, front wall of the part 3 is notched as at 6, the
notches corresponding in size and relative spacing with the projections 2". But in the working position of the part 3 in which it is held by the split pin, and in which it is shown in Figure 2,vr the notches 6 are ,notopposite the projections 2, so that removal 'of the blade is blocked. I )Vlienl the blade needs to be removed for replacement the split pin 5 is drawn out and the part 3 slid lengthwise until `notcltiesand projections register.
In Figures, 4 -and 5 also the slotto receive the projections of the blade is formed yby the putting together of the two parts 7, 8 of which the holder is built; and the blade is released by 1 under side which ride on chamfered pins yIII set or curved pins 23 in the part 8. When the doctor is working the parts are in the relative position shown in Figures 3 and 5, being pressed together by leaf springs II. By removing the split pin 5 and pushing the 'part 1 endwise the machine attendant can lift the part 'I as shown in Figure 4 and the blade can then be removed laterally.
The invention may readily be applied to suchforms of holder as are described in my previouslymentioned patent by notching one wall of the retaining slot for the escape of the projections, and inserting in the slot a notched slide. In Figures 6 and 7 the slide I2 is of L-section and in working position blocks the notches I3 in the holder as seen infFigure 7. But it ycan be freed and shifted until its own notches I 4 register with the notches I3 and with the projections 2, and the blade is released. Y
Or such a slide may be-at as shown at I5 in Figures 8 and 9' and formed with slots IB opening to the edge of the slide at one end.
Figure 10 shows a form of holder 20 modified to receive and fit a round rod I1 in which are notches I8 extending half across it. As in Figure 'I the front wall of the holder 20 is notched at 2l opposite the projections 2 and the notches are normally blocked by the rod I'I.` By turning the rod through a right angle, its notches Il are aligned with the notches 2| and the blade is freed.
In Figure 11 the groove to receive the projections 2, which with the groove which receives the rear edge ci' the lamina constitutes the retaining slot, is formed in the top of a round rod Il, rotatably mounted inthe holder I6 in the same way as the rod Il in Figure 10. When the split pin 5 is removed and the rod I9 turned the rear edge of the lamina is withdrawn from its groove and the blade more or less ejected from the holder. Instead of the rod' I 9 a tube may be used,'similarly molmted and having a slot or perforations (which are to be understood as included by the words slot or slotted in the sub-joined claims) in its upper surface to receive the projections 2.
If the blade, instead of being fitted with projections, is perforated at intervals near its rear edge the moving part of the holder may project ample as shown in Figure 12 a rod 22 actuated to turn like the rods Il and I9 may carry hooks which enter openings in the blade on Vvrotation of the rod. 0r as shown in Figures 13 an'd 14 a slide 24 moving endwise may lift retaining pins 25 into the blade perforations. The cam blocks 26 on the slide are preferably made with inverted T-section slots to receive heads on the pins so that they are positively withdrawn on movement of the slide in the opposite direction.
It will, be appreciated that in all of the forms described, the blocking means are shiftably carried by the 'holder and are operable when in one position for blocking removal of the blade and operable in another position for permitting removal of the blade laterally from the holder. The retaining portion of the blade is intended to refer to the projections or apertures in the blade which cooperate with the blocking means.
