Description

April 13, 1937. B. s. FLofiADAY REGULATOR MECHANISM FOR WINDOWS OF RAILWAY CARS AND THE LIKE Filed March 23, 1935 Patented Apr. 13, 1937 wisest PATENT ()FFHQE REGULATOR MECHANISM FOR WINDOWS OF RAILWAY CARS AND THE LIKE Burton S. Floraday, Toledo, Ohio, assignor to Dura Company, Toledo, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application March 23, 1935, Serial No. 12,592
4 Claims.
This invention relates to vehicles, but more particularly to windows and window frames for vehicles, such as railway cars and buses, and an object is to produce a new and improved window mounting for vehicles of this character by which the Window can be conveniently raised and lowered by mechanism on which the window can be readily mounted, the window frame being removable to enable the window to bemounted or replaced without difficulty.
Another object is to produce a regulator mounting for windows of this character, which is readily accessible for repair or removing the window, and which affords maximum travel for the win- 5 dow within a minimum amount of space.
Other objects reside in the details of construction, arrangement 'andoperation hereinafter described, and, for purposes of illustration, but not of limitation, embodiments of the invention are shown on the accompanying drawing, in which:
' Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a portion of the inside of a vehicle body showing the window mounting and a portion of the upper panel broken away to show the regulator mechanism;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional elevation on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 showing the connection between one of the regulator arms and the window;
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view on the line 44 of Figure 1 showing the mounting of the runways for the window;
Figure 5 is an enlarged vertical section on the line 5-5 of Figure 1 showing the sill structure; and
Figure 6 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of an alternate form of connection between the window and regulator.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises-a vehicle body It! having a window opening I! within which a window I2 is vertically movable. The sill for the window is in this instance made up of parts l3 and I3, which may be spot welded together at their centers and also spot welded, or otherwise suitably secured, to upright portions of the body. The end portions of the parts 13 and w are shaped to provide a horizontal groove M in which is disposed a felt strip l5 against which the lower edge of the window l2 may seat when in lowered or closed position. As will hereinafter appear, the necessity for a well or sub-sill is obviated, the window l2 being raised with the upper portion extending into a pocket or chamber above the window'when moved to open position.
The vertical side edges of the windoware guided in runways formed by a U-strip I6 covered 5 by felt or fibrous material H, the side edges of the window being bound by a channel strip [8. The runway I6 is suitably secured to a vertically disposed strip I9, which abuts against a U- shaped stamping 20, which is fixed at its rear end i portion to a frame part 2|. The oppositely disposed vertical edges of the frame parts 2! and 22 are turned inwardly and cover the rear portion of the runway It. A substantially U-shaped strip 23 fits over the front end of the stamping 2|] and has inturned end portions 24 which cover the front portion of the adjacent runways. It will be seen from an inspection of Figure 4 that the runway structures on opposite sides of the stamping 20 are the same, so that the adjacent "20 window 12 is] similarly guided. Screws 25 hold the strip 23 in place so that by removing the screws and taking oif the strip 23 the windows can be released from their runways.
Mounted on the upper longitudinal edge of the N extends over the front portion of the channel" 21. This portion of the retainer is secured to the channel 21 by screws 33, which extend through the depending portion 32, channel 21, and into a sleeve or holder member 34 disposed within the channel above the rubber strip 26.
Arranged above the window opening II is a regulator mechanism 35, which is a unitary structure having a mounting plate 36 secured by screws 31 and spacer sleeves 38 to a panel 39 forming part of the body. The panel 39 is secured to the body by screws 40 at the upper end thereof. The arrangement is such that by removing the screws Ml the panel 39 may be removed and with it the regulator mechanism.
The regulator mechanism 35 is of a well known type having a pair of arms 4| secured to gear segments 42 respectively, which mesh with each other 7 sothat the arms swing in opposite directions. One of the gears 42 meshes with a smaller gear 43, with which a larger gear 44 rotates. The gear 44 meshes with a pinion 45, with which is associated a well known clutch mechanism 48. Connected to rotate the pinion 45 is a handle 4'! disposed on the outside of the panel 39. Counterbalancing springs 48 are associated with each of the gear segments 42. Since the above described double arm regulator is well known in the art, detail description and explanation thereof is not considered necessary.
It will be seen that a stud 49 is disposed on the outer end of each of the arms 4|, and, as shown in Figure 3, the stud is engageable in the channel or guideway formed by the retainer 4|, a washer 50 pressed outwardly by coil spring 5| bearing against the outer portion of the retainer to prevent rattles and cooperate with the flared outer end of the stud 49 to hold it in the desired position. It will be apparent that by turning the handle 41 in one direction or the other the studs 49 travel in opposite directions in the slotted panel screws 32.
3| and operate to raise or lower the window.
When it is desired to remove the window the screws 32 and 33 are removed to disconnect the retainer 3| from the channel 21, thereupon by turning the handle 4! the retainer may be moved away from the window to leave the upper edge thereof free therefrom. Thereafter, by removing the strips 23, it will be apparent that the window can be readily replaced.
In the form shown in Figure 6, the parts are similar to the structure shown in Figure 3 except the strip 28 is secured as by spot welding to the retainer 31*, thereby dispensing with the The bolt 33 projects entirely through the channel 21 as well as the strip 28**, and a part 5| fixed to the rear side of the strip 28 and screw threaded toreceive the bolt 33 It will thus be seen that a series of bolts 33 may be removed,
after which the retainer 3P can be separated from the channel 21 and thereby separate the regulator mechanism from the window.
It is to be understood that numerous changes in details of construction, arrangement and operation may be eifected without departing from the spirit of the invention, especially as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
