UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO STEINHOFER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,690, dated September 3, 1878; application filed July 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO STEINHOFER, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Brackets and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a window frame and curtain embodying my present invention; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the curtain and bracket.
This invention has reference to that class of devices in use for sustaining the ends of curtain-rollers; and it consists in a bracket constructed as hereinafter described and possessing points of novelty, which are made the subject of the claims.
The object of my invention is to furnish a device admitting of the lowering of the curtain from above for purposes of ventilation, while still screening the lower portion of the apartment from view.
In the device hereinafter described the ends of the roller are pivoted in arms, which are hinged to the window-frame at either side, and are adapted to be swung inward and downward, thereby lowering the curtain from above to an extent measured by the length of the pivoted arms.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents a window-frame of the usual construction, to which is secured at either side a plate provided with a quadrantal arc, B. (See Fig. 2.) From the plate projects a rod, 1), upon which is pivoted an arm, O, havingv at its opposite end a perforation for the roller-pivot. From the arm 0 a lip, 0, projects, overlapping the arc B, whose function is to prevent lateral motion of the rod 0. A spring, H, is coiled about the rod 1), and engages with the arm 0, holding the latter normally in a vertical position.
The curtain E is of the ordinary construc tion, and is attached to its roller in the usual manner, the latter being provided with a curtain-cord, 0, attached to a suitable tightener secured upon the window-frame.
A cord, G, is fastened to the ends of the arms 0 0, whereby the latter may be drawn downward and inward, as desired, and secured by means of the loops ff upon the cord F, a suitable button, a, being attached at either side of the window-frame. The curtain-cords e e pass through a perforation in the rod b, so that the tension upon them is practically uniform, whatever be the position of the arms 0 G.
The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to lower the upper portion of the curtain, the same is drawn down to the desired extent by means of the cord G, and secured by attaching the appropriate loop f upon the button a. The rods b I) serve to retain the portion of the curtain below them close to the sash; or, if desired, the curtain may be brought in front of the rods, affording openings for draft laterally, as well as above and below. Upon releasing the cords F, the arms 0 O are raised to a vertical position by means of the springs H. I
Having thus described my invention,- what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A curtain-roller pivoted at either end to arms attached to the window-frame, and adapted to be swung inward, as described, the said arms being provided with spriu gs for normally holding them in a vertical position, and cords for securing them when swung inward, substantially as set forth.
2. The rods 1), extending partially across the window-frame, and adapted to retain the curtain close to the sash and admit of its ready removal therefrom, substantially as described.
3. A curtain roller mounted upon arms hinged or pivoted to the window-frame, and provided with one or more arcs, B, for preventing lateral motion of the arms, substantially as described.
4. In combination with the arms 0, the springs H and arcs B, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with the curtain and roller, mounted upon pivoted arms, as described, the springs H, cords G and F, and button a, substantially as set forth.
OTTO STEINHOFER.
