Description
C. ROSS GLAZ IER S TOOL April 6, 1937.
Filed May 16, 1936 In ven lor M a A Home) Patented Apr. 6, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in glaziers tools and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying novel means for securely holding glazier points in a manner to greatly facilitate driving of said points into the window frame.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a tool of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong,
durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and Wherein:--
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section, taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
25 Figure 3 is a detail view in perspective of the magnetized steel plate constituting a very important part of the invention.
In the arrangement which has been illustrated, the invention has been incorporated in a putty knife which is designated generally by the reference numeral I, said putty knife including a handle 2 from one end of which a conventional blade 3 projects. The other end 4 of the handle 2 is, as best seen in Figure 2 of the drawing, at right angles to a beveled face 5 which is formed on said handle 2.
The face 5 of the handle 2 has formed therein a longitudinal recess 6 for the reception of a magnetized steel plate 1. The magnetized plate 1 is flush with the face 5 of the handle 2. Further, the outer end of the magnetized plate 1 is flush with the end 4 of the handle 2.
Extending longitudinally into the magnetized plate 1 is a slot 8. A screw 9 is countersunk in the magnetized plate I at the inner end of the slot 8 for rigidly securing said plate in position in the recess 6. The slot 8 provides bifurcations ill on the magnetized plate 1, said bifurcations including free end portions ll of reduced thickness forming shoulders l2.
The shoulders I2 are for abutting engagement with the glazier point l3 over which the comparatively thin end portions H of the bifurcations I0 extend when said point is to be driven into the frame IA of the window in a manner to secure the glass I5. Of course, the glazier points are caused to adhere to the tool by the magnetism of the plate 1, and the shoulders 12 provide a positive drive for the points. Further, the points, when positioned on the tool, are confined against lateral movement by the opposed side walls of the recess 6. While the invention has been shown embodied in a putty knife, the device may be incorporated in any other suitable tool or may be an independent tool in itself.
It is believed that the many advantages of a glaziers tool constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of thedevice is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:--
1. A tool for driving glazier points comprising a handle including a substantially flat face having a recess therein, and a magnetic plate mounted in said recess and substantially flush with said face, said magnetic plate including reduced portions for the reception of a glazier point between certain of the walls of the recess, said reduced portions providing shoulders on the plate for abutting engagement with the glazier point.
2. A tool for driving glazier points comprising a handle including a flat f ace and further including an end extending at right angles to said flat face, said fiat face having a recess extending therein from said end, a magnetic plate secured in the recess and flush with said face, said plate comprising bifurcations including reduced free end portions for accommodating a glazier point, said reduced portions providing shoulders on the bifurcations engageable with the point for driving said point.
