5 Claims.
This invention relates to jewelry and has particular reference to a watch case which is so constructed and arranged as to render the watch capable of being worn and used in avariety of different ways.
The invention resides in a watch case including a body having a hinged clip leaf disposed at the rear thereof for clamping a portion of a garment between the same and the bodyof the case when the watch is worn as a clip watch, and in which prongs on said clamping leaf project rearwardly from apertures in the leaf and are adapted to be accommodated by complementary apertures in the case body which are aligned with the leaf apertures so as to receive the hooked terminals of a wrist strap when the watch is worn as a wrist-watch.
As a further feature, the improved case is formed with a slot which in addition to accommodating and exposing the winding stem of the movement for manipulation may be employed for receiving a connection for a fob or flexible element so as to permit the watch to be worn as a fob or lapel watch.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved watch case structure which is comparatively simple in its construction, inexpensive to produce and which is highly attractive in its appearance.
With the above enumerated and other objects in View, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawing in which there is disclosed a preferred form of the invention, while the appended claims cover variations and modifications thereof which fall within the scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a perspective of a watch having a case constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating the same in use as a wrist-watch.
Fig. 2 is a perspective thereof as viewed from the rear.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view therethrough taken approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and illustrating the same used as a clip watch and applied to a garment.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 4-4 of Fi 2.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken approximately on the line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the watch case includes a body I!) of any desired shape which encloses the watch movement I I and is provided with front and rear grooves l2 and I3 which mount the crystal l4 and rear cover I5. The body is provided adjacent opposite edges, preferably the opposite end edges, with slots [6 extending therethrough from the front to the rear surfaces thereof and also with a slot I'l extending from the front to the rear surfaces thereof medially of an adjacent edge. The latter slot, in addition to accommodating and exposing for manipulation the winding stem N3 of the movement, functions to optionally receive a connection for a flexible element or fob when the watch is to be used as a fob watch or lapel watch.
the case body.
slot I1 and the winding stem IS. The leaf I9 is 2 The notch 23 also exposes the formed with slots 24 adjacent opposite edges thereof which are complementary to the slots l6 and adapted to register therewith when the leaf is in closed parallel relation with the case body.
The slots l6 and 24 are adapted when registered a to receive therethrough the terminal attaching members 25 of a wrist strap 26 to permit the watch to be worn as a wrist-watch.
The leaf I9 is further provided with inwardly directed anchoring prongs 21 extending from opposite edges of the slots 24 to anchor the watch in clamped relation to a garment when the same is employed as a clip watch with the garment clamped between the leaf [9 and the rear of the case body. The slots I6 in addition to receiving the terminal attaching members 25 of the wrist strap 26, also provide recesses for receiving the anchoring prongs 21 to permit the leaf to lie flatly against the rear of the case body when the watch is used as a pocket watch, wrist-watch, fob watch or lapel watch.
In order to tension the leaf l9 against opening movement relative to the case body, when serving as a clip watch, fob watch, wrist-watch or lapel watch and to provide means for retaining I said leaf in an angular position, the pintle rolls 2| of the case body are provided with rearwardly projecting lugs 28 having angularly disposed faces 29 and 30 against which leaf springs 3| selectively impinge.
In its angular position, the leaf serves as an easel for sustaining the watch case in an upright position on a supporting surface.
What is claimed is:
l. A watch case including a body enclosing the watch movement and provided adjacent opposite edges thereof with slots extending therethrough from the front to the rear surface thereof, a clamping leaf hingedly connected to the rear of the case body adjacent one edge thereof and provided with slots complementary to the body slots and adapted to register therewith for the reception through said registered slots of terminal devices of a wrist strap, and inwardly directed anchoring prongs on the clamping leaf adapted to be received by said body slots.
2. In a multi-purpose watch case, a body containing the watch movement, a clamping leaf hingedly connected to the rear of the case body adjacent one edge thereof and having slots adjacent opposite edges thereof with anchoring prongs directed inwardly from said slots and said case body having complementary slots adjacent opposite edges thereof adapted to respectively register with the leaf slots to constitute a common means for receiving the terminal attaching devices of a wrist strap and to accommodate said anchoring prongs.
3. In a multi-purpose watch case, a body containing the watch movement, a clamping leaf hingedly connected to the rear of the case adjacent the upper edge thereof, complementary slots in said case body and said clamping leaf, anchoring prongs forming the sides of said leaf slots and directed inwardly into the body slots, and means for resiliently retaining said clamping leaf in parallel relation to the rear surface of the case body and at an angle thereto as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a multi-purpose watch case, a body housing a watch movement, a leaf hingedly connected to the rear of the case adjacent one edge thereof, complementary slots in the case body and leaf, anchoring prongs directed inwardly from said leaf slots, coacting means on the'body and leaf for resiliently retaining said leaf in substantially parallel relation to the rear surface of the body to clamp between the same a portion of a garment for attaching the watch case thereto and for resiliently retaining the leaf at an angle to said rear surface of the body so as to serve as an easel for sustaining the watch case in an upright position on a supporting surface, and said complementary slots adapted to register for receiving therethrough the terminal attaching devices of a wrist strap.
5. A multi-purpose watch case including a body for housing the watch movement, a leaf hingedly connected to the rear of the case adjacent one edge thereof, means for resiliently retaining said leaf respectively in an angular position and substantially parallel thereto, slotted portions adjacent opposite edges of said leaf having inwardly directed anchoring prongs and complementary slotted portions adjacent opposite edges of the body adapted to respectively register with the leaf slots to constitute a common means for receiving the terminal attaching devices of a wrist strap and to accommodate the anchoring prongs when the leaf is parallel to the case body.
