Y. Application June 30, 1944, Serial No. 54mm 2 Claims. 1
My invention relates to clips and earrings combined and has particular reference to articles of, jewelry which can be used as earrings or as clips or brooches.
My invention has for its object to provide an article of jewelry having an ornamental body with a hingedclamping member or arm at the rear which is resiliently urged towards the body for clamping an object placed between the body and the clamping arm.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for a secure engagement of. an object, such as a garment by the clamping member, for which purpose the clamping member is provided with a sharp pin which can pierce the object thereby firmly retaining the clip on the object.
Still another object of my invention is to provide means to remove the sharp pin or to place the same in an inoperative position when the article is used as an earring. I provide for this purpose a hinged connection between the pin and the clamping arm of the article whereby the pin can be folded out of the way and placed into a corresponding groove in the clamping arm.
Still another object of my invention is to provide interlocking cam-shaped projections and recesses on the clamping member and a post on the body of the article to which the clamping member is hingedly connected, whereby the member is resiliently urged into an operative or clamping position.
Other objects and advantages of my invention ar more fully explained in the accompanying specification and drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a rear view of my combination clip with the clamping arm in a folded or operative position;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the article with the clamping arm turned into an inoperative position;
Fig. 4 is a top view of the same;
Fig. 5 is a bottom or inside view of the clamping arm;
Fig. 6 is a sectional side view of the clamping arm;
Fig. 7 is a rear view of a modified clip;
Fig. 8 is a fractional end view of the cylindrical portion at the end of the arm showing camshaped recesses on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 9 is a similar view of the arm-supporting post;
Fig. 10 is a fractional detail view of a pin on an enlarged scale taken along the section line Ill-40 of Figure 5.
My clip or earring consists of a main body I which may be of any suitable ornamental shape as, for instance, in the shape of a leaf with an ornamental projection or a stone 2 at the top. A hinge post 3 is attached to the rear siderof the body I by its three legsA, 5, 6. The post is provided with acentral cylindrical portion engaged at the ends by cylindrical portions I of resilient legs 8 of aclamping arm 9. pivotally connects the portions 1 with the post 3. The end portion Ill of the clamping arm may be circula and cup-shaped as shown, the convex portion H being adapted to engage a portion of a garment such as a lapel for holding the clip in place. To render the engagement of the garment by the convex portion more positive, a sharp pin I5 is provided, hingedly connected with bosses at IE to the cup-shaped portion H by a pin 14. The hinge is placed eccentrically in the portion II, the central portion being provided with an opening I! through which the pin I5 may be pushed into an operative position shown in Fig. 3.
The cup-shaped portion II is provided with a suitable recess or slot 22 for the end of the pin I5 so that the latter, when folded into an inoperative position as shown in Fig. 6, is concealed by the walls of the slot. The article with the pin folded out of the way can be conveniently used as an earring, the cup-shaped portion ll being smooth with the pin fully concealed.
The article can be made right and left hand for the use as an earring or it may be of a symmetrical shape as shown in Fig. '7, which shows an octagonal body 20.
The hinge post 3 is provided at the inner sides with cam-shaped projections l8 engaging corresponding recess IS in the resilient legs 8 of the clamping arm. The projections are so arranged that the clamping arm tends to snap into a lock or operative position shown in Fig. 1 or 7. There may be two sets of the recesses l9 provided in the legs 8, as shown in Fig. 8, at right angles to each. other, for causing the clamping arm to stay in an open position as shown in Fig. 3, the post 3 having corresponding recesses [9 as shown in Fig. 9.
The pin I5 is similarly frictionally engaged by the sides of the bosses l6 so that the pin, when opened will tend to stay in that position. Additional resilientprongs 2| may be provided for yieldably retaining the pin in an inoperative position.
It will be understood that various features and principles of each of the embodiments of the in- A pin l2- vention above described or referred to may be utilized or substituted in the other embodiments.
While the invention has been described in detail with respect to certain particular preferred examples, it will be understood by those skilled in the art after understanding the invention, that various changes and further modifications may v be made without departing from the spirit and yieldably retain the clamping arm in an operative position at the body and in an inoperative position away from the body, at a large-angle to the operative position, the free end of the clamping arm having an opening; and apin pivotally supported on the end of the clamping 'arm at one side of the Opening for rotation at about 90 in a plane normal to the plane of the head of the' clamping arm, the head of the clamping arm' at a point opposite the hinged base of the pin having a recess for concealing the end of the pin; the clamping arm having a recess for the point of the pin onisides of the recess extending parallel to the point of the .pin.
2. A clip and earring combined comprising a main ornamental body; a clamping arm hingedly connected at one end to the body; means to yieldably retain the clamping arm in an operative position at the body and in an inoperative position away from the body at a large angle to the operative position; a cup-shaped head on the clamping arm having a central opening; bosses at the inner side of the cup-shaped head; and a pin having an enlarged base pivotally and frictionally supported between the bosses, the pin being arranged to be rotated at about 90 in a plane transverse to the plane of the cup-shaped head to be placed in an operative position in a direction toward the body of the clip, the head having a recess on the outside for the middle ortion of the sharp point of the pin when the pin is placed in an inoperative position, the point of the pin slightly extending beyond the recess for moving the pin by the users finger nail.
