1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in traps for catching ash and soot in furnace flues.
The principal object of the present invention is 5 to provide means for collecting ash and soot which normally is drawn into the flue pipe and flue and frequently collects and forms deposits in the flue pipe and flue resulting in hindrance of the draft and frequently resulting in flue fires.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a trap for catching ash and soot substances before they enter the furnace flue pipe and flue wherein means is provided whereby the trap can be emptied conveniently and without disagreeableness to the person manipulating the same.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of. the following specification.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the trap;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the flue attaching pipe section.
The trap consists of a cylindrical shell 9 provided with a downwardly tapering hopper-like lower portion 9a. terminating in a reduced cylindrical neck I9 having slits in diametrically opposite portions thereof. through which the slide valve H is slidable. The reduced cylindrical neck 19 is adjustable on the bottom of the trap so that it may be turned in any position to af ford easy access to the slide valve. One end of this slide plate II is rolled over to provide a hand-grip [2, while the opposite end is provided with a down turned flange l3 to serve as a stop.
The bottom of the neck [9 is provided with an elongated rectangular-shaped opening it merging at its intermediate portion with a circular opening I 5 and one end portion of the slide plate H is provided with an opening it of substantialfine substances will be sucked up the flue pipe section 29 instead of permeating the atmosphere outside of the shell 9 and perhaps soiling the clothes of the person performing this operation.
A small lug 2| is secured to the upper portion of the shell 9 and has an opening 22 therein through which the lower end of a cable or wire can be disposed. This wire 23 can be anchored at its upper end to a joist or ceiling so as to assist in supporting the trap.
The lower end of. the pipe section 29 is below the level of the nipple 26 so that incoming gases and substances from the furnace will be caused to take a downward route or an indirect route up the flue pipe section 29, and in this tortuous route any precipitation of the substances will be collected in the lower portion of the shell. Thus, a high percentage of all substances in the flue gases will be collected in the shell 9 instead of going up the flue and perhaps collecting therein.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size, and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed HAROLD F. BURNAUGH.
