ROBERT E. SPBINGLE, OF LINDEN, ALABAMA.
SPARK AND SOOT ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent NO. 790,758, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed December 8, 1904. Serial No. 236,103.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. SPRINGLE, a
.citizen of the United States, residing at Linden, in the county of Marengo and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark and Soot Arresters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of stoves and furnaces, and particularly to stovepipc ating and depositing soot or other matter con' tained in the smoke or resulting from combustion.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drum or like vessel arranged to be interposed in or between the sections of a stovepipe and having a float operated by a body of water contained in the drum to govern the draft of the pipe according to the amount of water in the drum.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in a spark-extinguisher and soot-collector a drum or similar vessel containing a body of Water and attachable to a stovepipe so that one end of the latter may project through the water and open above the waterline, a deflector depending from the other end of the pipe, and a float having a damper between the first-mentioned pipe end and the said deflector.
Various devices have been devised for arresting sparks and collecting soot in stovepipes, most of which employ a body of Water and many of which have a shield or deflector; but as far as known to me none have a deflector of my particular design and none have a damper-float. The absence of the latter in the aforesaid devices imperfects their practical utility to a great extent and defeats the results desired in this class of devices. It is therefore my purpose to overcome the defects, disadvantages, and objections found in such devices and to furnish an automatic device which shall extinguish sparks, collect and deposit soot, and which shall automatically govern the draft.
With these and various other objects, advantages, and improved results in view the invention consists in a water vessel surrounding part of a stove or like pipe, a deflector positioned over the pipe, and a float connected with the pipe and having a damper to control the pipe draft according to the amount of water in the vessel.
1n the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure l is an elevation showing the application of my invention to a Stovepipe. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the deflector. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings. y
The drum or vessel 1 has a central tube 2 extending from the bottom 3 of the drum, through which it opens, and terminates in an open end above the water-line? about midway the length of the drum. The bottom 3 is provided with a flange 4, surrounding the bottom opening, and the detachable top 5 has a sleeve 6 projecting through it. The flange 4 and the sleeve 6 fit Stovepipe-sections 7 and 8, respectively, and the section 7 may extend into the tube 2, as desired, and the drum is fixed to the said sections by screws 9, set through the sleeve and flange. The drum is provided with hangers 10 to assist, if necessary, in holding it in position and has a spout 11, communicating with an aperture 12, for supplying the drum with water. This aperture is protected by a screen or wire-gauze 13. The
drum is provided with a suitable water-gage 14 and a door 15, affording an entrance to the drum for cleaning it and the removal of soot.
The top 5 is provided. with a flanged deflector 16 of smaller diameter than the drum, so as to leave a smoke-passage 17 between the drum and the deflector, and the latter is hung from the top 5 by a series of arms 18, so as to leave an interval or space 19 between the deflector and the end of the tube 2.
The float 20 comprises a plate-ring 21, fitting loosely over the tube 2, a disk 22, and a series of bars 23, connecting the ring and disk. The disk acts as a damper and is operated to automatically control the draft according to the Water charge of the drum. The disk or damper is made to play vertically in the interval or space 19. Its upward movement is stopped by the deflector, and in case of low water or no water at all in the drum the damper will drop onto and close the tube 2. Thus the float automatically closes the tube and shuts off the draft until proper amount of water is supplied to float the damper.
It is obvious that with the float in operative position the damper is held against the deflector, and the latter receives within its annular flange the combustion from the tube 2, whence it is deflected. The sparks falling into the water are extinguished, while the smoke escapes by way of the passage 17 to the sleeve 6. The soot it collected by the top of the deflector, whence it may be removed through the door 15.
The drum is provided with a water-cock 24 for use when the drum is employed for heating water for domestic or other use, and a suitable pump may be applied to the drum for forcing hot water to steam-boilers and bath-tubs.
\ It will be seen that the float will signal the exhaust of water in the drum by shutting ofl the stove draft, and in supplying the drum with water the gage will indicate the water height, so that the water may not go above the water-line, but will stop below the end of the tube 2.
1 do not wish to be understood as restricting my invention to any special size of parts or character of material of which such parts are composed nor to any particuiar position or location of the device on a stovepipe or smoke-stack, but reserve to myself the right to make such alterations and arrangements in and of the parts as may be found most desirable in the practical application of the device. Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
ed to contain a body of water and having a smoke-tube extending through the water and terminating above the latter, and-a deflector depending from the top of the drum, of the float having a damper-disk to open and close the tube.
2. In a spark-extinguisher and soot-collector, the combination, with the drum adapted to contain a body of water, a drum-top having a sleeve, and a tube extending from the bottom of the drum through the water and terminating above the latter, of a deflector depending from the drum-top, and a float having a damper-disk operated between the deflector and the said tube to open and close the latter.
3. In a spark-extinguisher and soot-collector for stovepipes, the combination, with the drum adapted to contain a body of water, an open-ended tube extending from the bottom of the drum and projecting above the water-line, and the drum cap or cover having an open-ended sleeve, of the deflector depending from the cap over the said tube with a space therebetween, and the float having a damper-disk controlled by the deflector and operated in said space to open and close the tube.
4. .The combination, with the drum adapted to contain a body of Water, a tube opening through the bottom of the drum and extending above the water-line, and a sleeve extending through the top of the drum, of a float slidable vertically on the said tube, and a dam per on the float to open and close the tube.
5. The combination, with the drum adapted to contain a body of water, a top sleeve opening from the drum, and a tube opening through the bottom of the drum and projecting above the water-line, of a float comprising a ring to lit the said tube, a damper-disk operated between the sleeve and the tube to open and close the latter and bars connecting the disk with the ring.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT E. SPRINGLE.
