1.. DUMAS TAP FOR WATER OR OTHER LIQUIDS AND FLUIDS Filed March 11, 1955 Patented Mar. 2, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Louis Dumas, Geneva, Switzerland Application March 11, 1935, Serial No. 10,520 In Switzerland March 27, 1934 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in taps for water or other liquids and fluids.
The improved tap is constructed so as to supply cold water alone, or hot water alone, or a mixture of both at varying degrees of temperature, or it can be used for supplying other liquids or fluids in like manner.
The annexed drawing illustrates an example of construction of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the improved tap.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1, taken at a right angle thereto.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of Fig. I seen from above.
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate individual parts of the tap in section.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a top plan view, Fig. 8 a vertical section, and Fig. 9 a bottom plan view, of a further individual part of the tap.
Fig. 10 is a vertical section of the same taken at a right angle to Fig. 8.
Figs. 11 and 12 illustrate horizontal sections of Fig. 10 at Il-ll and I2-|2 respectively.
The tap illustrated in the drawing is composed 5 of a casing a (Figs. 1, 2, 5) which is cylindrical outside and slightly conical inside, in which the conical plug b (Figs. 2, 8, 10) is rotatable.
The plug b is divided into two compartments by a wall B provided with an opening C at its centre, for the passage of the hot water, the entrance of the cold water is effected through the channel D which extends through and terminates at the level of the opening C. The diameter of the channel D is reduced and its inlet opening restricted by being formed of a series of perforations F as shown in Fig. 10 to reduce the pressure of the cold water supply.
Operation of the plug between the limits shown in Fig. 3 gradually closes one of the water inlets while at the same time gradually opening the other.
In the screw-threaded mouth e of the plug b is screwed the threaded portion of a guide-nut f having a flat part which forms a hermetic closure.
A pin g secures the nut on the plug b while the nut f is integral with the control knob h serving for turning the plug b in the casing a. The placing in position and the adjustment of these difierent members is obtained by tightening the closing cap 1' which is provided centrally with an opening in which a shoulder of the nut f engages as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the position of the nut ,f is maintained.
Extending axially through the nut f is a rod 1 20 part operated by the handle m. At its lower end this rod is screw-threaded, so that it can be screwed inwardly or outwardly of the nut f, and thereby displace a valve consisting of a washer t, on a rod t which is attached to the rod Z by a pin t which however allows the rod t to revolve on itself. In the top of the part f is screwed the packing nut o.
If the valve t is raised by means of the handle both the hot and the cold water pass into the upper compartment 0 of the plug and flow through the opening 8 which is elongated by 35 degrees so as to allow the issue of the water whatever may be its position in respect to the opening u of the casing; the discharge tube 1) screws into the casing.
The outflow pressure will be stronger in proportion as the valve washer t is raised higher.
In the water systems used in dwellings, the water enters through a single cold water pipe which extends directly to the taps and other appliances. A branch pipe is usually connected to the cold water pipe and leads to a water heater and storage vessel which ofier resistance to the flow of water. Consequently, the pressure of the Water at the discharge of the hot water branch is at a pressure lower than that of the water in the cold water pipe. As a result, at a point 01 use the hot water is at pressure lower than that of the cold water.
According to the present invention the inlet a for the cold water is provided with a grating A kept in place by a washer. This grating restricts the flow of cold water commensurate with the resistance of the heating system and operates to balance the pressure of the cold water supply with respect to that of the hot water.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A tap for mixing hot and cold liquids supplied by a system in which the hot liquid, due to resistance of heating apparatus, has a discharge pressure lower than that of the cold liquid, comprising a casing, separate inlets in said casing for the two liquids, an outlet on said casing for the mixed liquids, a valve plug rotatable in said casing, said plug having a mixing chamber formed therein and ports cooperating with said inlets to progressively close the inlet for one of the liquids while progressively opening the inlet for the other liquid to admit the liquids to the mixing chamber, and a valve in said mixing chamber operable independently of said plug for simultaneously regulating the flow of the liquids into the mixing chamber.
2. A mixing tap for liquids, comprising a casing, separate inlets for the two liquids, an outlet for the mixed liquids, a valve plug rotatable in said casing to progressively close the inlet for one of the liquids while progressively opening the inlet for the other liquid, said plug being hollow and having an internal valve seat, a valve oper- LOUIS DUMAS.
