Description

J.. WRIGHT-& GLMG'NARY.
Corn-Planter.
wfrA/Essfs.'
UNITED STATES PATENT Orr-Ten.
JAGO VRIGHT AND GEORGE MGNARY, OF DELAFIELD, VSCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-PLANTERS.
Speeiiieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,148, dated August 20, 1878; application filed February 26, 1878.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB WRIGHT and GEORGE MGNARY, both of Delatield, in the county of Waukesha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Planters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
The figure of the accompanying drawing represents a sectional side view of our invention.
The object of our invention is to furnish improvements in hand corn-planters; and consists in the peculiar construction of the feedslide, and the device by which it is operated, and also in the combination of a spiral spring with the plunger, by means of which it is `thrown up as soon as relieved ot' the pressure ot'. the hand before the planter is raised from the ground, all oi' which is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawing,in which- A represents a receptacle for the corn, which may be constructed oi' tin or ordinary sheet metal, and is attached to the standard B with nails or screws. C is the plunger, which is provided with a handle, D, by which the machine is operated. The plunger C is provided with a concave surface, E, against which the roller F of the feed-slide Gr is pressed by the action of the spiral spring H. I is a spiral spring, which throws up the plunger when released by the hand.
When the planter is placed upon the ground, the plunger is pressed downward by the hand of the operator upon the handle D, when the shoulder of the plunger presses against the roller F and crowds the feed-slide G forward,
with the kernels of corn over the opening or pipe K, when they drop against the spring- `plate L andthe side of the plunger, and are ready to be deposited in the ground at the next operation of the machine. With the upward motion of the hand, the spiral spring I throws up the plunger, and the spiral spring H throws back the feed-slide Gr beneath the corn, and another deposit is made inthe opening in the feed-slide.
The bottom of the receptacle A is concave or funnel shaped, having an opening through which the corn passes to the slide G. Vlhe slide Gr is'provided with an openin g calculate d to hold the number of kernels desired to be planted. Y i
When a greater or less number oi' kernels are required to be planted, the slide G may be withdrawn and substituted by a slide haring either a larger or smaller opening, according to the number of kernels desired to be planted.
Having thus described our invention., we do not claim the receptacle A, standard D, the plunger C, or their general arrangement and combination. Ve are aware that they are not new.
What we do claim as our invention, and dcsire to secine by Letters Patent, is-
The plunger C, as provided with a concave surface, E, in combination with the `eedslide G, in such a manner that the vertical motion of the plunger will transmit a horizontal motion to the feed-slide, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing' as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB WRIGHT. GEORGE MGNARY. lVitnesses K. SHAWVAN, JAs. B. ERWIN.
