SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,846, dated December 29,1891.

To all whom it' may concern:

Beit known that I, CHARLES H. FULKERsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raum, in the county of Pope 'and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Hand-Planter, of which the following is a specilication.

This invention relates to hand corn-planters; and it has for its object to provide a dero vice of this class which shall be simple in construction, durable, and efficient in operation, and by means of which the quantity of seed planted at each operation may be easily and accurately regulated.

\Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

1 designates a Vertical arm, which is provided at its upper. end with a handle 2. Said arm is provided with laterallyextending lian ges 3 3 and brackets 4: 4, which latter support the seed-box 5, which is mounted detachably upon said brackets, and is secured by means of hooks 6, engaging eyes 7 upon the lflanges 3. The side bars of the seed-box are provided with slots 8 for the passage of the 4o transversely-movable seed-slide 9, the outer end of which is provided with flanges l0, working in horizontal grooves ll in the inner sides of the flanges 3, thus guiding the seedslide. The latter is provided with a suitable perforation or seed-cup 12.v Suitably mounted in the seed-boX is a vertically-adjustable arm 13, carrying at its lower end a brush 14, which serves as a cut-off, and which, by adjusting' it vertically, may be caused to leave any desired 5o quantity of seeds in the perforation or seed- Serial No. 388'542.

Suitably mounted upon the outer side of the arm 1 is avertically-movable slide 15, the extent of the movement of which is limited by a slot 16, in which works the bolt or pin 17, whereby the said slide is attached to the arm 1. The slide 15 is also provided with a slot 18, working over lthe seed-slide in such a manner as not to interfere with the operation 6o of the latter. The flanges 3 3 are provided on their inner sides with downwardly-inclined grooves 19, forming guides or bearings for a sliding block 20 which is suitably connected with the lower end of a rod 21, the upper end of which is pivoted at the upper end of the slot'lS in the slide l5. The rod 2l extends through a perforation 22 in the seed-slide. The movement of the block 2O in the inclined grooves causes the rod 21 to swing and recip- 7o rocate the seed-slide. It will thus be seen that when the slide 15 is reciprocated vertically the block 2O likewise reciprocates in the inclined grooves 19, thus causing the pivoted rod 2l, which engages the seed-slide, to im- 75 part to the latter a transverse reciprocating motion.

Between the flanges 3 3, near the upper ends of the latter, is pivoted a flat spring 23, which is held by means of a transverse rod 8o 24 in contact with the lower end of the arm 1, which latter has a cutting-edge 25. The lower end ot the slide 15, when the latter' desceuds, is adapted to force the lower end of the spring 23 in an outward direction and to 85 force the seed out between the said spring and the lower end of the arm l. The upper end of the slide l5 has a handle 2G, by means of which it may be operated.

The operation ot `myinvention will be read- 9o ily understood. By the upward movement of the slide l5 the seed-slide is forced in an out ward direction, thus causing the contents ot the seed-cup to be dropped between the flanges 3 3 and to rest upon the lower end of 95 the spring 23. The operator now forces the lower end ot the planter into the ground and depresses the handle 2G, thus forcing the slide 15 in a downward direction. Said slide will thus serve to force the lower end of the spring roo 23 in an outward direction and to force the seeds between the said spring and the lower end of the arm l into the ground. At the same time by the downward movement of the slide 15 the seed-slide is carried back into the box or hopper, where it receives a supply `of seed for a repetition of the operation.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- Y l. In a hand corn-planter, the combination of the vertically-movable operating-slide, the transversely-movable seed-slide, a reciprocating slide mounted in downwardly-inclined grooves in the laterally-extending flanges of the body of the planter, and a rod extending from said reciprocating slide through a perforation in the seed-slide and connected pivotally with the operating-slide, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a hand corn-planter, the combination of theplanter-arm having the detachable seedvided with downwardly-inclined grooves in their inner sides, the transversely-reciprocating seed-slide, the vertically-movable operating-slide, a rod pivoted to the latter7 extending through a perforation in the seed-slide and connected with a reciprocating slide mounted in the inclined grooves of the iianges, and the spring pivoted between the upper ends of the latter and held normally in contact with the lower end of the planter-arm, substantially as set forth.

The combination of the-planter-arm, the vertically-movable operating-slide connected with the latter by means of a bolt extending through a slot in said slide, the transverselymovable seed-slide working through a slot in the operating slide, a reciprocating slide mounted in inclined grooves in ianges extending from the planter-arm, and a rod secured to said reciprocating slide, extending through a perforation in the seed-slide and connected pivo-tally with the operating-slide, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
