This invention relates to metal melting means for use with type setting machines and my imprrovements are directed particularly to the means for pre-melting the type metal and feeding the molten metal therefrom tothe usual or main melting pot for delivery to the type mould.
In the usual practice with type setting machines the main melting pot is in fixed relation with a moving part of the machine, to move with it, and the addition thereto of the Weight of the pre-heating device is a direct cause of an unnecessary amount of wear which has the effect of throwing the main melting pot out of alignment. Therefore in one phase of the present invention I cause the auxiliary or pre-melting pot to be removably attached directly to the machine frame, it being fastened to the face plate and caused to rest on the column of the type setting machine in a stationary position.
In View of the stationary mounting of the auxiliary melting device I provide a Valve operating lever to control the flow of molten metal to the main melting pot, together with means in xed relation to said melting pot to actuate said s lever in the reciprocating movement of said melting pot, under oat regulation according to the molten metal level in said main melting pot.
My invention further includes the provision of insulation as lining for the melting pot wherein two plies of asbestos with an intermediate ply of cellophane are employed.
Also my invention includes the provision of thermostatic control means for the burner employed in heating the auxiliary melting pot.
Other features and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of an auxiliary melting device constructed according to my in- 40 vention, this view also showing the main melting pot as supported by and in fixed relation to a moving part of the machine.

My improved auxiliary melting device is composed of ltwo parts, the lower part, which is in the form of an aluminum jacket I, serving to support the upper part or hopper 2, which latter is provided with front and rear flanges 3 that respectively rest upon the front and rear walls 55 of part I, said flanges having angled, depending portions 4 adapted to receive screws 5 for fastening the two parts together.
The part or jacket I is open at its lower end and burner tubes 6 are suitably disposed and secured below said opening to supply heat to a melting pot I that is removably sup-ported in said jacket.
For the support of melting pot 1 lugs 8 are formed on the inner surface of jacket I, and lugs 9 are provided on the wall of pot 'I to rest upon said lugs 8, said lugs 9 also serving to hold said pot in spaced relation within said jacket.
The spacing is for the purpose of interposing insulation material between the pot and jacket, and as an example of such insulation I have found it desirable to employ two sheets of asbestos, indicated at IB, with an interleaved sheet of cellophane A, this composite form of insulation proving very efficient in retaining the heat developed in the melting pot..
As a simple and convenient means for removably supporting thefauxiliary melting device in stationary relation upon the machine I employ these instrumentalities: A strip or strap of cast metal II is secured as by screws I2 to the rear wall of jacket I, said strip having a lug I3 extending therefrom, and an adjusting rest screw I4 is entered through said lug, this screw being intended to rest upon the column of the type setting machine. Also a lug I5 extends from one side of jacket I and is intended to rest upon the top guide bracket I6 of the type setting machine said lug having an orifice for the reception of a screw I'I, which engages the bracket I6. A third point of connection between the jacket I and the machine frame is effected by providing a boss I8 in the guide bracket I t to receive a screw I9 that is entered through a hole formed in the wall extension of jacket I.
` rIvhe hopper part of the device, indicated at 2, has the top of its side walls inclined forwardly downward. substantially as illustrated, and a hinged cover 2| is provided therefor, said cover having forwardly projecting supports 22 which carry a rod 23 whose ends are pivotally engaged in bearing lugs 24 that project forwardly from the hopper walls.
The cover 2| is provided near its upper end with engaging means, indicated at 25, for a rod or handle, such as that represented at 26, whereby said cover may be conveniently pulled open and closed. A stack 2l positioned at the top of the hopper serves for the escape of fumes therefrom.
The cover is lifted for putting casting metal,
such as dead type &c. into the hopper, but if pre-cast pigs are to be introduced thereinto an opening 28 in cover 2l may be used without requiring to lift said cover. This opening 28 is normally closed by a plate 29 that is pivoted at 30 to cover 2| and is adapted to be swung to its o-pen and closed positions. A projection 3l on plate 29 can be engaged by rod 26 for its operation. A stop 32 formed on cover 2| limits the movement of plate 29 at its closed position. Y
Metal that becomes melted in pot 1 is poured from a spout 33 into the main melting pot, the molten metal entering the spout through an orice 34 in the base of pot 1 as controlled by a needle valve 35 carried by a valve stem 36. Said valve stem is shielded from Contact with the contents of pot 1 by being encased in a tubular chamber 31 which extends from near the base of said pot to the top thereof, said chamber, in the example illustrated, being cast integrally with the pot in the form of a hollow, vertical projection 38 at the inner surface of the pot wall.
Also the valve stem 36 extends upwardly beyond the to-p of pot 1 and hence into the hopper part 2, where it is shielded from contact with the metal contained in the hopper by means of a hollow excrescence 39 at the inner surface of the hopper wall providing an open channel 40 outside the hopper. It is this channel 40 into which the upper end of valve stem extends where it is available for the application of valve operating means.
The excrescence 33 is open at the upper end which is inclined downwardly inward, for accessibility, and is normally covered by a closure plate 4l that is adapted to be removably fitted thereover, said plate having wings 42 near its upper end to engage the hopper wall, and having a terminal, outwardly projecting lip 43 whereby it may be withdrawn.
A bushing 44 in the upper end of chamber 31 serves to centre the valve stem 36 and a washer 45 loosely fitted on said stem is` engageable by the forked end of an arm 46 that straddles the stem, a spring 41 intermediate said washer and the stem head 48 enabling the upward movement of arm 46 to exert a yielding lift impulse upon the valve. The arm 46 is angled from a lever 49 which is pivoted at 50 to a bracket 5l extended from the jacket I.
The main melting pot, here indicated at 52 and which, as stated is in fixed relation to a moving part of the type setting machine, has with said moving part a reciprocating motion. This motion brings pot 52 intermittingly below pot 1 where it pauses with its opening in the cover (not shown) below spout 33 long enough to receive molten metal from said pot 1 if the valve 35 is at that time lifted to permit a flow through orifice 34.
Normally, with the level of molten metal in main pot 52 sufficiently high no auxiliary metal is needed or taken, but the main pot is so equipped with valve-lever actuating means that, as the'level recedes in the main melting pot to a point where a further influx of molten metal is required, then such further supply will be automatically provided.
The means herein illustrated for performing this automatic control comprise a float 54 which is supported in the molten metal in pot 52 and is carried by a chain 55 that is connected to one end of a lever 56 which' is pivoted to a standard 51 extending up from the top of pot 52. The free end portion of lever 56 is of suflicient weight so that it will swing downwardly when the molten metal level is high, but as the level falls this lever 56 will come to a horizontal attitude, as shown in Fig. l. In this position, as the pot 52 moves toward pot 1, lever 56 will strike lever 49, thus causing the valve 35 to lift and release a quota of molten metal from spout 33 into pot 52, whose entrance opening 53 has been brought in the said movement of the pot into position below spout 33 to receive this quota.
The strap Il at its lower end has a transverse member 51 which forms a bearing :for the burner tubes 6 at one end thereof, said tubes at their other end being engaged in a cast plate 58 which is secured as by screw 59 to the jacket l. The casting which includes plate 58 also includes a. manifold 6D and a web B that connects said manifold with said plate. The manifold 60 is supplied with gas as by way of a fitting 6I which communicates with a passageway'62 in the manifold. The flow of gas from the manifold is through tubes 63 having needle valves 64, this flow however -being controlled by thermostatic means. Thus, a thickened portion 65 of pot 1 has a cylindrical opening 66 in which is placed a tube 61 whose outer end is screwed into a plate 68 which is secured to a side wall of jacket I as by screws 69. Lugs 19 upon plate 68 carry a lever 1l which is pivoted thereto as at 12, said lever bearing against an expansion rod 13 that is extended into tube 61, a spring 14 connecting one end of said'lever to the plate 68.
A valve in the form of a rod is entered Within manifold 66, being slidable through a bushing nut 16 and having spaced relation within the manifold passageway. This rod 15 is adapted to be shifted to cover and uncover the gas inlet C into the manifold, under the control of lever 1l, which at its end remote from the pivot has a tappet 11 that eo-acts with rod 15 to shift it into its gas closing position under the influence of the elongation of expansion rod 13. A spring 18 located between a washer 19 on rod15 and bushing nut 16 serves to restore rod 15 to the gas open position when the expansion rod 13 contracts, thus permitting the burners to function again as the temperature lowers in the melting pot.
Variations within the spirit and scope of my invention are equally comprehended by the foregoing disclosure.
I claim:-
l. An auxiliary melting device for use with type-setting machines, said device comprising a lower, jacket part, a melting pot therein, and an upper, hopper part that is removably connected to said lower part, said lower part provided with means whereby it may be removably supported by and secured to a fixed part of the machine frame, molten metal delivery means for said pot, a delivery control valve having a stem, and means within said pot and encircling said valve stem to shield said Avalve stem from contact with the pot contents.
2. An auxiliary melting device for use with type-setting machines, said device comprising a lower, jacket part, a melting pot therein, andan upper, hopper part that is removably connected to said lower part, said lower part provided with means whereby it may be removably supported by and secured to a fixed part of the machine frame, molten metal delivery means. for said pot, a delivery control valve having a stem, means within said pot and encircling said valve stem to shield said valve stem from contact with the pot contents, said stem extending up into said hopper; means within said hopper to shield said stem from contact with the hopper contents while to said lower part, said lower part provided with means whereby it may be removably supported by and secured to a fixed part of the machine frame, molten metal delivery means for said pot, delivery control valve having a stem, and means Within said pot and encircling said valve stem to shield said valve stem from contact with the pot contents, said means comprising a tubular projection extending from the upper edge of the pot to a point adjacent its bottom, whereby said 10 stem is encased substantially its entire length.
