COLLAR Filed April 21, 1936 Patented Feb. 9, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COLLAR Zealand Application April 21, 1936, Serial No. 75,628 lln New Zcaland April 17, 1935 7 Claims.
. This invention relates to collars of the soft or semi-stiii type in which it is usual to provide some means of stiffening the collar peaks to prevent their being curled up and forced out 4 of shape when in use.
The present invention has been devised with the object of providing a collar of the type described with novel, cheap and effective stiffening means which will prevent any possibility, under normal circumstances of the collar peaks being curled up and forced out of shape when in use; will not normally cause any ironing marks from the stifiener to appear on the collar after laundering operations; while the stiffening means also support and hold the tie in position when in use on the wearer.
The present invention broadly comprises a collar of the type described having casings enclosing stiifeners not affected by laundering operations so secured to the co1larone at each end-as to lie adjacent to and parallel with the outer hem of the collar to permit the passage of the ties between the casing and the collar top, means being provided for detachably holding the free end of said casing to the collar.
The invention will, however, be illustrated in its preferred constructional embodiment in the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure l is an elevation of a collar prior to being folded embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is an elevation of a collar folded ready for use with its enclosed stifieners in position, the tie not being shown.
Figure 3 is an elevation of a stiffener on an enlarged scale enclosed within its casing before being attached to the back or inside of the collar peak.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of a preferred form of stiffener.
According to this invention in its preferred form a soft or semistiff collar 5 may be manufactured in any usual way with the usual extensions of the collar band 2 forming flaps or tabs 3 and l provided with stud holes 5 and 5. Straight stiffeners l (see Figure 4) made of any suitable material not affected by laundering operations and which may be conveniently bent into the desired position by the wearer, are enclosed in a casing la in any suitable manner as by stitching 8 between a folded piece of material or" the required size provided With an extension or enlarged portion which is placed under the hem or turned edges iii and H of the collar top it! and stitched in position at the back of the collar top peaks i3 by stitching Hi and I securing the said hems or edges l0 and II on the collar top. i
As clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, the stiffener l in its casing la lies adjacent to and parallel with the collar top binding or hems ll) 5 and i l with the result that in ironing operations the pressure of the iron is substantially taken by the collar top binding or hem and thus the marks of the stiffeners are not impressed on the collar to an undesirable extent. Slots l6 and I! 10 (which may be reinforced for strength by suitable stitching) are provided in the inside thickness only of the collar band 2 near the usual stud holes 5 and 6.
In one way of using the invention a tie may be placed under the covered stiffener 1 when the collar is in the position shown in Figure 1, the collar top !2 is then folded down upon the collar band 2 as shown in Figure 2, the stiffeners l in their casings 7a are then inserted through the slots 16 and I7 within which they are held between the two thicknesses of the material form.- ing the collar band 2 thus holding the tie and maintaining the collar peaks I3 in position and prevent the curling or forcing out of shape of the said collar peaks.
By reference to Figures 1 and 3 it is clearly shown that the stiffener casing 700 is only partially stitched to the collar top l2 by means of the extension or enlarged portion 9 and the stitchings i4 and it which leaves the end 9a free to be lifted for the placing of a tie in position and. also to facilitate the insertion of the said ends 9a of the covered stiffener i into the slots l6 and I! as shown in Figure 2.
I claim:
1. A collar comprising a top portion, a band portion, said top portion having peaks, a stifiener,
' a casing for said stiffener and said casing at one end thereof being secured to one of said peaks 40 and having the greater portion thereof free and extending parallel and adjacent to the end of said top portion.
2. A collar comprising a top portion, a band portion, said top portion having a hemmed edge and hemmed ends, a stiffener, a casing for said stiffener, said casing at one end thereof being secured by said hemmed edge and a hemmed end and said casing having the greater portion thereof free and extending parallel and adjacent to the end of said top portion whereby during laundering said stiffener will be protected by said adjacent hemmed end.
3. A collar comprising a top portion, a band portion, said top portion having a hemmed edge and hemmed ends, a stiffener, a casing for said stiffener, said casing at one end thereof being secured by said hemmed edge and a hemmed end and said casing having the greater portion thereof free and extending parallel and adjacent to the end of said top portion whereby during laundering said stiffener will be protected by said adjacent hemmed end, and said band portion having means thereon adapted to cooperate with said free end of said casing in order to enclose a tie.
4 A collar comprising a top portion, a band portion, said top portion having a hemmed edge and hemmed ends, a stiffener, a casing for said stiffener, said casing at one end thereof being secured by said hemmed edge and a hemmed end and said casing having the greater portion thereof free and extending parallel and adjacent to the end of said top portion whereby during laundering said stifiener will be protected by said adjacent hemmed end, and said band portion having a slot therein through which said free end of said casing may be passed.
,5. A collar comprising a top portion, a band portion, said top portion having peaks and hemmed ends, a stiffener, a casing for said stiffener and said casing at one end thereof being secured to one of said peaks by the hemmed end thereon and said casing having the greater portion thereof free and extending parallel and adjacent to the end of said top portion, and said band portion having a slot therein through which said free end of said casing may be passed.
6. A collar comprising a top portion, a band portion, said top portion having peaks and hemmed ends, a stiffener, a casing for said stiffener, an extension upon said casing at one end thereof and said extension being secured to one of said peaks and said casing having the greater portion thereof free and extending parallel and adjacent to the end of said top portion thereby eliminating ironing marks in said collar due to said stiffener.
7. A collar comprising a top portion, a band portion, said top portion having a hemmed edge and hemmed ends, a stiffener, a casing for said stiffener, an extension upon said casing at one end thereof and said extension being secured to said top portion by said hemmed edge and a hemmed end and said casing having the greater portion thereof free and extending parallel and adjacent to the end of said top portion whereby during laundering said stiffener will be protected by said adjacent hemmed end.
