The invention relatesto an outboard motor for light boats and more particularly to -motors of this class to be fastened by the side of the board of the boat, quickly and readily. Ac-
cording to the invention the motor with all its accessories forms a self-contained block which also comprises the means intended for placing the whole set on a pin-shaped carrier integral with the boat. The fastening means consist in a laterally projecting sleeve enclosing the carrier pin and adapted to be immobilized on the same by a simple attachment such as a bayonet-joint and elastic means. An essential feature of the invention is further the particular arrangement l5 of the several parts of the set on the block so that a good accessibility thereof is secured, and the fact that the motor is horizontal and its longitudinal axis parallel or almost parallel to that of the propeller shaft so that, .when the motor is running, any shocks produced re taken up by the thrust of the propel1er. o the system of transmitting the torque from the motor to the propeller shaft and the arrangement provided for y 'water cooling are particularly advantageous.
The drawings represent an out-board motor corresponding to the present invention and in which by way of example Fig. 1 shows a vertical section through the whole set as taken about the line I-I of Fig. 2, some parts disposed infront of the plane of sec- .tionbeing shown by dotted lines,

The out-board motor comprises the enginecylinder 4, the crank case 5, a flywheel magnet 6, a starting appliance 1 fastened to the flywheel, the propeller shaft 8, the fuel tank 9 placed above the engine cylinder, a muiller 25 arranged by the side of and directly connected to the motor and a carbureter Ill, all these items being combined jects a'sleeve I I, the bore of Awhich is intended to be pushed over a pin-shaped or tubular carrier, e. g. a tube I2 with'which the h ull of the boat is provided, so as to carry' the motor set. A clutch I2a is provided between the sleeve II and the tube I2, said clutch having one element l I3a connected to the outer end of the sleeve II and the other element in the form of a flange I3V connected to the tube I2. The propeller shaft 8 is arranged transversely to the engine shaft and parallelly to the axis of the engine cylinder 4 itsdrive being accomplished through the intermediary of a worm or helical gear I 5 the reduction ratio of which is one half. 'I'he water circulation is secured by holes I6 of the propeller I'I and the hollow shaft 8 While the fresh Water is taken up by a trunk I8 which can, unless used, be swung towards the motor about a pivot I9 as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
With this arrangement every part of the outboard motor is readily accessible as the latter is open on lall sides and the several parts thereof are easily detachable froinone another so that they are susceptible of easy repair or change in case of damage. The attachment provided for fastening the motor to the boat is disposed at a point and designed in a way not interfering with the accessibility of the other parts of the set. Moreover the sleeve II is by a carrying yoke 20 connected to union rails 2| fastened to the motor so that the structure is further stiiened.
In the embodiment shown by Figs. 4 and 5 the free end of the sleeve I0 is provided with an enlargement I2' which is to enclose a ange I3' fastened to the carrier II', e. g. by spot welding.' At its front end the enlargement I2' is closed by a lid I4 secured on the said sleeve in any suitable manner. On its outside face the ange I3' is provided with a' radial knife-like rib I5 and ac cordingly the lid I4 carries on its rear face several, e. g. two radial grooves I 6 of a similar trlangular cross section. The depth of the enlargement I2' is so proportioned that the ange I3 can be pushed inward by the carrier II being displaced, in which case the rib I5' leaves the groove I6' and is prepared to enter another groove when the carrier Il' has been turned and so the motor may be adjusted to another inclination. This engagement may be positively maintained by a nut I8' disposed outside the lid I4 on a thread of the carrier tube I I' and pressing the iange I3' rmly against the .lid I4.
The flange I3 is not round but provided with e. g. two sector-shaped projections (Figs. 6, '1, 8)
whereas the lid I4' has corresponding recesses Isf 50 through which the-projections of the ange I 3' can be passed so as to be caused, when the carrier tube II' has been turned, to bear against the solid portions of the lid I4', the rib I 5' being at the same time introduced into one of the 55 2. grooves i6' which establishes a sort oi bayonetjoint by which the parts I3 and il* are secured not only to each other in a lengthwise direction but also against relative angular displacements.
The invention claimed in the present applicar-l tion relates primarily to the means for mounting the motor on the boat. v Other novel features illustrated are claimed in my divisional application -Serial No. 118,167, led December 29, 1936.
What I claim, is:-
1. In combination Vwith an outboard motor unit;
a bearing sleeve attached'to said unit, a rod-like member adapted to be secured to the boat and having a bearing t in the interior of said. sleeve, a clutch, one element of which is connected to the outer. end of said sleeve, the other. elementr being connected to the rod-like member for interconnecting saidrod-like member and said bearing member against relative rotational movement,
and a spring in the interior of said sleeve between the outer end of said rod-like member and the inner end b! said sleeve for urging the elements of the clutch together and for effecting a :iie'xible axial connection between said fsleeve and said rod-like member. l
2. In combination with an 'outboard motor unit, a sleeve xed to said unit and extending laterally therefrom, a rodllike member adapted to be seplate having facing interlocking surfaces, and a member khaving threaded engagement with said rod-like member for moving said sleeve axially to bring said flange and plate into interlocking en-` gagement against relative rotation.
3.- In combination with an outboard motor unit, a rod-like member adapted to be secured to the boat, a bearing sleeve attached to said unit, embracing said rod-like member and movable axially therealong, a clutch, one element of which is connected to said sleeve, the other element being connected to said rod-like member 'for interconnecting' said sleeve and said member against relative rotational ovement, and spring means for urging the elements of the clutch together and for effecting a flexible axial connection between said sleeve and said rod-like member.
4. In combination with an outboard motor a sleeve xed to said unit and extending laterally therefrom, a rodi-like member adapted to be secured to the boat and having a bearing iit in the interior of said sleeve, said sleeve and said rodlike member `being relatively movable axially, a clutch between said sleeve and said rod-like member and having one element connected to said sleeve and the other element connected to said rod-like member, and an annular member having a threaded engagement with saidrod-like member and engaging the clutch element connected to said sleeve formoving said sleeve axially to bring the two clutch elements into interlocking engagement against relative rotation, and for` locking said elements in said interlocked position against relative axial and rotational movement.
