Description
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
YVARREN A. GUY AND XVILLIAM S. GUY, OF NOTTOWVAY O. H., VIRGINIA;
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-HOISTING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,030, dated August ll, 1878; application filed July 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that we, WARREN A. GUY and WILLIAM S. GUY, of Nottoway (J. H., in the county of Nottoway and State of Virginia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Tobacco-Hoisting Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and f1 ures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a part sectional front view of our tobacco hoisting machine, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Our invention relates to a tobacco-hoisting apparatus, the object being to hoist tobacco up in a barn, and also to take it down with great facility, the hoisting and lowering being performed by a man upon the floor, while another takes the tobacco from the wagon and places it upon the hoisting-hooks.
Our inventionis designed as an improve ment upon the device shown in Patent No. 191,619, to G. H. Slaton, June 5,1877, and the improved novelty lies in affording lateral adj ustment to the pendent standard by new and useful means, andin other features, as will be more fully set forth.
Upon atop cross-bar supported upon the top beams of a barn we suspend an upright, which supports a carriage having a cross-piece provided with hooks for supporting the sticks of tobacco. An endless rope attached to the carriage runs over pulleys above and below, for hoisting and lowering the cross-piece. In a suitable frame above, through which the upper cross-bar operates, and from which the pendent upright is swiveled, is journaled a friction-roller, which bears upon the upper surface of the cross-bar. Near each end of this cross-bar is journaled a pulley, and correspondin g pulleys are journaled below the crossbar. A suitable endless rope passes over the pulleys in the cross-bar, inward under the cross-bar, and over the pulleys below, passes down the sides of the upright and through the same at a suitable distance from the bottom, so as to be within reach of the hoister. Pulling this'rope up or down on either side forces the upright to the right or left, the frictionroller traversing the cross-bar.
The cross-piece, whi-h carries the tobaccostiek, and is hung upon the carriage, is provided with slots having pins operating therein, which pins are secured to the carriage. This arrangement and construction allows the tobacco-carrier to be tilted in either direction as the sticks bind upon the beams.
Tothe top cross-bar we secure legs having feet at right angles thereto, which feet rest upon the beams in the barn, and keep the entire apparatus in an elevated position.
The tobacco-hooks or devices which carry the tobacco-sticks are hinged in the center, so as to form a double hook when open, and allow two sticks of tobacco to be carried at the same time. hen folded over or closed they carry one stick. These hooks are secured to the cross-piece on the carriage.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the upper cross-bar, and A pulleys journ aled therein nea each end. a represents the legs secured to the cross-bar A, and a feet at right an gles thereto, which feet rest upon the beams to of the barn. B represents a metal frame, through which the cross-bar A operates, and to this frame is suspended, by a swivel-joint, b, the pendent upright C. B is a frictionroller journaled inthe frame B above the crossbar, and 1) 1) small rollers or pulleys below the cross-bar. In the upright 0, above and below, are journaled pulleys C 0, around which the hoisting-rope D operates, and this rope is secured to the carriage E, carrying the cross-bar F having hook f. The lower pulley, C, is provided with an operating-crank, c.
The adj usting-rope G passes over the pulley A and the pulleys b, then down the sides of the upright, and through the same at c.
The cross-piece F has slots f through which operate pins 0 on the carriage E. By means of these slots the cross-piece F may be tilted in either direction, as the tobaeco stick en gages with the bottom of the beams.
The hooks f, secured to the cross-piece F, are hinged near their centers, so as to form double hooks to carry two sticks at a time.
Vhen folded over the device forms but one hook.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a tobacco-hoisting machine, the laterally-adjustable upright, pendent from and operating relatively to the cross-bar, as herein specified.
2. The cross-bar A, having legs a and feet a, made in one and at right angles with each other, and adapted to serve in relation to the beams a, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The cross-piece F, having slots f, combined with the carriage E and pins 0, adapted to allow the cross-piece F to tilt in either direetion, as specified.
4. The hinged double hooks ff, in combination with tl e cross-piece F, as and for the purpose set f rth.
5. The com ination of the fliLlIlB'B, having friction-roller B, the swiveled upright (J, and cross-bar A, ith means for traversing the roller B alo g the upper surface of the crossset forth.
roller B, pulleys b b, and the swiveled upright 0, in combination with the adjustingrope G, as specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
