NITIEID 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. WADLINGTON, OF UITON STATION, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-HOISTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,986, dated August 13, 1878; application filed June 26, 187B.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J oHN M. WADLINGTON, of Upton Station, in the county of Hardin an d State or" Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Hoisters, of which 'the following isa specification:
Figure 1 isa side view of my improved de- Fig. 2`is a rear view ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an` improved device for hoisting" green-leat` tobacco into place, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention consists in a tobacco-hoister formed by the combination, with each other, of the staff, made in three parts, connected together by the swivel and the hinge, the top cap, provided with the pivot-pin andthe stoppins, the top bar, secured to the pivotpin by a washer and key, the pulley, the cord, and
the sliding block or plate, provided with the keepers, and the arms or brackets, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the lower part of the staff, to the upper end of which is swiveled the lower end of the middle or main part, B, of the statt. The partsA B are connected together by a screw, G, attached to the end of the one part, and screwing into a nut, D, let into the end of the other part, so that the said parts may be drawn close together tom ake a closej 0in t,or left loose to turn upon each other as aswivel. To the upper end of the middle or main part, B, of the staff is secured, by a hinge, N, the lower end of the short upper part, E, to enable the tobacco to be put upon the tiers of the barn without raising the top bar oft' the tiers upon which it rests. To the upper end of the upper part, E, is attached a cap, F, to the center of which is at.. tached a pin, G. The pin Gr passes through the center ofthe top bar, H, which is secured upon it by a washer and key, so that it cannot become detached accidentally. To the cap F /Q ist@ are attached four pins, I, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By this construction, when the statt' A B E is raised and turned, it will carrythe top bar, H, with it, the pins I preventing it from turning upon the said bar H; but when the staff A B E hangs from the top bar, H, aud ils turned, it will not carry the said bar H with it, the pins I passing beneath the said top bar, H. The top bar, H, is arched, as shown in Fig. 2, to allow the tobacco to go up so high that it need not be lifted.
To the lower side of the cap F is attached a pulley, J, around which passes a cord, K, which is attached to a block or plate, L, con nected with the staff A B E by keepers l', passing around the said statt, so that the said block or plate L may be raised and lowered upon the said staff' by operating the cord K. The block or plate L is made of such a length that it will not bind while being raised and lowered. To the upper part of the block or plate L are attached two brackets or arms, M, the outer ends of which are recessed to receive the stick to which the tobacco-leaves are attached.
H avin g thus described my invent-ion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A tobacco-hoister formed by the combination, with each other, of the stalit', made in three parts, A B E, connected together by the swivel C D and the hinge N, the top cap, F, provided with the pivot-pin G and the stoppins I, the top bar, H, secured to the pivotpin Gr by a washer and key, the pulley J, the cord K, and the sliding block or plate L, provided with the keepers Z', and the arms or brackets M, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN MAHLON VADLINGTON.
