The pressure of these springs may be regulated by adjusting the screws l5, l6, l1 and la. The parts I, 2, 6 and I are, therefore, not only individually movable, but the pressure of each of the single parts upon the work piece is also individually adjustable. Furthermore, a special device is provided for each single part to control the amount of its downward movement. This device for the parts and 2 consists of rail 23 mounted in the main body l4 in which two screws 24 and 25 are adjustably arranged which bear against the lever arms I and II of the parts I and 2. Each of the parts 6 and 'l is provided with a third lever arm 26 and 21 respectively, each carrying an adjustable screw 28 and 23 respectively bearing against the main body l4, whereby the swinging movement of the parts 5 and in a downward direction is limited.
The main body |4 proper of the presser foot has a bore 30 in which the presser foot rod 4| is inserted and is provided with the stitch holes 3| and 32 for the needles producing the cover seam. The main body I4 is further, in well known manner, provided with two resiliently movable side portions 33 and 34. The spring 35 for these side portions 33 and 34 is connected to the main body 4 by means of a screw 36 and bears against pins 31 and 38 arranged in the movable portions 33, 34. The downward movement of these portions 33, 34 is limited by a pin 39 (Figures 2, 6 and 8) which is mounted in the main body l4 and extends with its ends into holes 40 which are provided in the said side portions 33 and 34 and are of considerably greater diameter than the cross section of thepin 39.
Furthermore, the movable part 2 is provided with a recess 42 adapted to receive a stop 44 the position of which may be adjusted and fixed by means of a screw 43.
The stop 44 serves for adjusting the folded portion of the left hand web of the fabric. According to the position of the stop 44, the needle passing through the stitch hole 5 pierces the folded left hand web 54 of fabric in a greater or shorter distance from the fold 55. Thus, as seen from Fig. 11, the stop 44 has been shifted as far as possible towards the part I of the presser foot, so that the needle pierces the web 54 of the fabric as near the fold 55 as possible.
As shown in Fig. 6, the parts and 2 have been lifted by the cross seam, whereas according to Fig. 7 the work piece and the cross seam respectively have been fed and have lifted the parts 6 and 1, while the parts and 2 rest again on the single thickness of the fabric. As shown in Fig. 8, the pivoted parts I and 6 and the resilient side portion 33, not shown in these figures, rest upon a single thickness of the fabric.
This construction of the presser foot is, of course, also adapted for sewing machines in which the stitch holes for all three needles are arranged in a single plane or in alignment. Under certain circumstances one pair of the movable parts may then be omitted.
The presser foot' according to the invention may also be employed for all kinds of sewing machines, and it is not intended to limit the invention to a presser foot suitable for a sewing machine having an overhanging arm and which is adapted for horizontally feeding the fabric in a direction towards the overhanging arm, as, without departing from the spirit of the invention, the presser foot may also be used in connection with a sewing machine of the kind having an overhanging arm and which is adapted for horizontally feeding the fabric in a direction away from the overhanging arm, 1. e., from the cylinder., In machines of this latter construction, the finished work automatically drops off the cylinder, 1. e., the work falls from the cylinder of the machine as soon as the sewing operation is finished.
The device for lifting the stop 44 on withdrawing of the joined fabric is shown in Figures 9 to 11.
The lever arm ll of the part 2 of the subdivided presser foot, pivotally arranged on the screw 4 and pressed against the fabric by means of the spring 20, projects somewhat beyond the main body l4 of the presser foot and has an inclined surface 45. Connected to the fixed frame of the sewing machine, by means of screws or the like, is a stop 46 the free end of which is directed towards the presser foot and formed as an inclined surface 41 corresponding to the inclined surface 45. A lever 48 is pivoted to the frame of the machine by means of bolt 48 or the like. A ring 50 connected to the presser foot rod 4| by a screw 5| carries a pin 52, and a recess 53, provided in the lever 48, is adapted to cooperate with the pin 52.
In operation, a pressure exerted on the lever 48 or a pressure exerted on the pedal adjusting the presser foot causes lifting of the latter, whereby the inclined surface 45 at the end of the lever arm H is brought in contact with the inclined surface 41 of the stop 46, so that the part 2 of the presser foot is swung against the action of the spring 20, i. e. islifted from the fabric. As soon as the recess 53 of the lever 48 engages the pin 52, the rod 4| is arrested in its elevated position and therefore the stop 44 is held in a position out of the path of the fabric. The stop is prevented from moving against the throat plate of the sewing machine, and therefore cannot form an obstacle for the work piece when the latter is withdrawn from the machine. The two pieces of fabric to be sewn together are fed into the machine under a certain angle and the left hand piece 54 of fabric is bent off in an acute angle, so that the bent edge 55 runs along the stop 44 (Fig. 11). The latter is ad-- justably arranged, so that the position of the bent edge 55 also may be altered, with the result that the material may be pierced at a desired distance from the edge 55. This stop 44 would impede the removal of the fabric from the cylinder, 1. e., the fabric would be caught by the stop. To obviate this disadvantage, the construction of the machine is such, that on lifting of the presser foot an additional swinging movement is imparted to the movable portion of the presser foot together with the stop, whereby the stop 44 is moved out of the range of the fabric which may then easily be stripped off.
What I claim is:
1. A presser foot for sewing machines comprising a main body, three pairs of foot members arranged with their operating parts in a single horizontal plane one behind the other, pivotally arranged levers extending upwardly, one for each of the foot members of the pair arranged furthest from said main body and of the middle pair, each of said levers forming part of its corresponding foot member, springs mounted in said main body, one for cooperation with each of said levers, set screws screwed into said main body,

2. A presser foot asset forth in claim 1 in which two side portions forming the third pair of foot members are yieldingly arranged in said main body and a spring is provided between said main body and said foot members of the middle pair the ends of which bear against said side portions.
3. A'presser foot as set forth in claim 1 in which an adjustable stop adapted to be fixed in position by a screw is arranged in a recess provided in one of said foot members of said pair extending furthest from said main body.
4. A presser foot as set forth in claim 1 in which an adjustable stop adapted to be fixed in position by a screw is arranged in a recess provided in one of said foot members of said pair extending furthest from said main body and means are provided by which, on lifting of the presser foot, said foot member carrying said stop is automatically lifted against the action of its spring.
5. A presser foot as set forth in claim 1 in which an adjustable stop adapted to be fixed in position by a screw is arranged in a recess provided in one of said foot members of said pair extending furthest from said main body and in which said upwardly extending lever forming part of said foot member carrying said adjustable stop is prolonged beyond said main body and provided at its free end with an inclined surface cooperating with another inclined surface provided at a stationary stop fixed to the machine frame.
