In order that the machine may be used for vamping or tipping shoes, it is desirable to use a cylindrical work support. The present machine is provided with a roller presser foot, which is located at one side of the needles so as to aid in the directing of the material for forming a curved line of Stitches. The presser foot is not only located at one side of the needles, but the point of contact with the work is substantially in a line passing through the rearmost needle and. at right angles to the line of feed. This aids in the moving of the work in a, curved path. In order to hold the umterial down when the needles are raised from the work, an auxiliary presser foot has been provided which engages the material on opposite sides of both needles and centrally between the needles, when two needles are used.

Mounted on this auxiliary press erfoot is an edge guide which is located 7 on'the opposite side of the needles from the roller presser foot. This edge guide is for guiding the upper layer of leather when vamping or tipping shoes. 7

From the above it will be apparent that the 'main presser bar is yieldingly forced downwardly by the leaf spring 17, while the auxiliary presser bar is yieldingly forced downwardly'by the spring2 l. The auxiliary presser foot has a central'finger 42 (see Fig. 7) which'extends between the needles, when two needles are used.
The' throat plate 2 is proyided with needle "openings 43 and 44 for the two' needles 8 and '7, respectively. Alongside of the needle opening 43 is a slot 45 for the section 46 of the feed dog. In the rear of and along the opposite side of the needle opening 44 is a slot 7 -47;for the other section of the feed dog; This opening 47 is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7.
The main portion of the feed dog is located in the slot 45, and the roller presser foot is directly above a portion-of this section 46 of the feed dog and is also directly at one side of the needle 8. Thus it is that the material may be readily turned while it is being stitched to form a curved line of stitching. The auxiliary presser foot is likewise provided with a finger 48 which lies alongside of the needle passing through the needle opening 43. The auxiliary foot is provided with anotherfinger 49 which is on the opposite side of the needle openings 43 and 44 from the finger 48. The purpose of these fingers of the auxiliary foot is to hold the material down when the needles are raised, so as to insure' the needles being withdrawn from the material without disturbing the location of the material. This auxiliary foot, as has alreadybeen stated, bears with comparatively n light pressure upon the material, and is for the primary purpose of stripping the material from the needles, while the roller presser foot insures a proper feeding of the material a stitch length. Said roller ,presser foot will, of course, turn as the material is fed along by the feed dog.
"same, while the other portion of the mate rial passes along the side of the edge guide and will be properly located relatively to the needles, so that both needles in a machine of the present type will pass through the material, and therefore, lines of stitches formed for securing the upper layer being stitched to the lower layer. This insures the proper placing of the sections of leather being stitched together when tipping or vamping shoes. The edge guide has a laterally projecting portion 52. The auxiliary presser foot has a'forwardly projecting arm 53. Be tween the laterally projecting portion 52 and the arm53 is a spring 54. This spring encircles a pin 55, which extends from the arm 53 down into the shank portion of the auxiliary foot. This pin passes through an opening in'the laterally projecting portion 52 of the edge guide, and therefore, the edge guide is not only yieldingly pressed downwardly by the spring, but is guided in its up and down movements. When the auxiliary presser foot is raised, the edge guide will be pressed downwardly until the lower portion 56 strikes the auxiliary presser foot. Thus it is that the edge guide israised with the auxiliary foot,
but is capable of moving to a position below I the face of the auxiliary foot, when the auxiliary foot is held raised by the material on which it rests, so that the edge guide is positioned for guiding the upper layer of the material as above stated.
While I have shown the invention-applied to a sewing machine having a cylinder bed,
it will be understood, of course, that it may 4 be used in connection with flat bed machines,
and with single needle machines as well as with two needle machines. Furthermore, instead of using an independent looper with each needle, the needlesmay be 'set abreast and a single looper used-therewith, making of a work support, a feed dog, needles, a roller presserv foot at one side of said needles, spring means for yieldingly holding said roller foot against the Work, a inain presser bar on which said roller foot is. supported, an auxiliary presser toot mechanism including an auxiliarypresser'bar disposed in rear of said main presser bar, and an auxiliary presserfoot on the needleside of said roller presser foot,sa1d auxiliarypresser foot having ashank rigidly secured to thelower 1 end of said auxiliary presser-barand having a free sliding connection with said main presser bar whereby said auxiliary presser.

In a sewing machine, the combination of a Work support, a feed dog, needles, a main presser bar, a roller presser foot mounted on said main presser bar, spring means for depressing said main presser bar, an auxiliary presser bar disposed in rear of said main presser bar, an auxiliary presser foot carried by said auxiliary presser bar and having a free sliding connection with the said main presser bar, whereby said auxiliary presser foot can move vertically independently of the main presser bar and is held from lateral movement about the axis of the auxiliary bar by said main bar, and spring means for normally depressing said auxiliary presser bar.
