Description

P. BOONE. Plow-Stock.
No. 206,766. Patented Aug. 6.1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
PERINO BOONE, OF MAYSVILLE, GEORGIA.
lM PROVEMENT lN PLOW-STOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,766, dated August 6, 1878; application filed July 1, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERINO BOONE, of Maysville, in the county of Jackson, and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow Stocks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of a plow containing my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the standard and beam at the point of their connection, and shows the means employed for varying the angle of said standard.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of myinvention is to enable the standard of a plow to be easily and quickly adjusted to and secured at any desired angle with relation to the beam; and to this end it consists in the means employed for combining the standard and beam, and for rendering the same relatively adjustable, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the beam of a plow, provided at its front end with a clevis, B, and at its rear end with handles 0, all of usual construction.
Pivoted upon the sides of the beam A, in front of the handles 0, is the bifurcated upper end of a standard, D, which from thence extends downward, and at its lower end is provided with any usual means for attaching a shovel.
Secured to the lower side of the beam A, in front of the pivotal bearing of the standard D, is a bar, E, which from thence extends downward and rearward through the open or divided portion of said standard, and from its rear end forward, for a short distance, is provided with a screw-thread, upon which, in rear of said standard, is fitted a wing-nut, F.
The upper side of the bar E is provided with ratchet-teeth e, that rake rearward, and are engaged by a pawl, G, which is pivoted at one end within the standard D, at a point just below the beam A, and from thence extends forward and downward until its opposite end rests upon said ratchet-bar.
The standard D may be swung forward or rearward to any desired angle, after which, by dropping the pawl G into engagement with the ratchet-bar E, and then screwing the nut F firmly against the rear side of said standard, the latter will be securely held in position.
It will be observed that while in operation the rearward pressure upon the standard causes a direct tensional strain to be thrown upon the bar E, so that a comparatively small quantity of metal at that point will be suffieient to enable said rearward pressure.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s In combination with the beam A, the bifurcated standard D, pivoted to or upon said beam, the bar E, secured to said beam A, provided with the threaded end, the ratchettceth a, and the nut F, and extending downward and rearward through said standard, and the pawl G, pivoted within the latter and engagin g with said ratchet-bar, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 22d day of June, 1878.
