Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
LOUIS LEYIOLDT, ()l NFJV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-RAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,738, dated August 6, W79; application filed July 5, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs LEYPOLDT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Railway-Rail, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical transverse section of my improved railway-rail.
The object of this invention is to furnish for elevated and surface railroads an improved rail, by which the annoying il oise caused by the contact of wheels and rails may be avoided and deadened, and a smoother and easier running of the cars obtained; and the invention consists of a railway-rail having a head with a dovetailed recess that is filled with a suitable packing, which projects above the head of the rail.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a railway-rail of any approved shape, which is rolled or otherwise provided with a dovetailed recess, a, in the head. The recess is filled with a packing, B, of rubber, leather, Manila rope, or other material, which projects above the surface of the head and forms contact with the wheels of the rolling-stock of the road. The contact of metal with metal, and the consequent noise caused thereby, is, by the packing of the rails, avoided, and a smoother and less annoying running of the trains or streetcars on these rails obtained. The dove tail shape of the recess retains the filling or packing in reliable manner, as the pressure of the wheels tends to compress it more and more firmly into the recess of the rail. The very objectionable noise ot'street-cars, trains of elevated railroads, &c., may in this manner be neutralized, and the running of these cars be made less annoyin Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent A railroad-rail packed with rubber or leather that projects slightly above the tread, to deaden the sound, as set forth.
LOIT IS LEYPOLDT.
