These and other objects of my invention and features whereby they may be attained, will be readily understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

, My improved device is illustrated in the drawings as applied to a door 2 and a door-casing 4. As shown, the device is provided with a cylinder 6, and a piston 8 having a rod l extending out through one end of the cylinder. This end of the cylinder has a cap I2 screw-threaded thereon and provided with an aperture through which the piston rod slides during the operation of the device. The other or outer end of the cylinder is closed by a cap M which is provided with an'air vent Hi, the flow of air through which being regulated by a thumb-screw I8. The outer end of the device may be connected with a door by means of a lug 20 on the cap I l'which is pivoted on a cotter pin 22 that extends through depending bracket arms or lugs 24 on a bracket 26 that is secured by screws 2'! to the door.
In accordance with the present invention,

With the check assembled, the U-shaped bracket 28 is attached to the plate 30 by means of the bolts 29, the bolts being inserted through apertures in the outerend of the bracket 28 and the bolt nuts applied The only difference in the manner of attachingthedevice to right and left hand doors to cause the door closing spring to operate in the right direction, is that the check is 'reversed in position with respect to the top and bottom sides of thebracket 28. To determine which side shall be uppermost,
each side "of the bracket bears an arrow 59, 55
and it is only necessary in applying the check to either right or left hand doors to position it so that the arrow on the top side of the U-shaped bracket points toward the door.
When the device has thus been applied to the door-case 4, the cylinder 6 is slid outwardly so that about one quarter inch of the piston rod I0 is showing, and then the location for the outer screw-hole of hinge plate or bracket 26 is marked. The cotter pin 22 may then be removed and the hinge plate attached. The cotter pin is then replaced to complete the attachment of the device to the door and door-case.
To change the tension of the door closing spring, the cotter pin 22 is removed and the clamping ring 52 loosened. The spring casing 49 is held from turning with one hand, and the clamping ring is slipped around the casing, away from the door to increase the tension and toward the door to decrease the tension. When the tension of the spring has been thus adjusted, the clamping ring is secured in position and the cotter pin 22 replaced. The checking action may be adjusted by turning the valve screw l8.
During adjustment of the door closing spring, the stop shoulders 57 by engagement with one of the lugs 55 prevents the spring from being overwound, and also prevents turning the clamping ring in the wrong direction from the untensioned position of the spring.
A feature of considerable practical importance in a spring tensioning device of the type illustrated, is the arrangement of the dogs 58 on the post 32 with the sleeve 39 between them. This Isleeve ensures that the dog which carries the lug 44 cannot be depressed sufhciently to disengage the lug from the slot in the arm of the bracket 28.
The check may be removed from the door case and door, by detaching it from the bracket plate disassembling of parts, and the door closing spring placed under the desired tension without difliculty. The casing supported between the arms of the U-shaped bracket, and the arrangement of the spring and associated parts therein, provides a strong and compact construction, which is symmetrical in design when two of the devices are used together, one for right-hand and the other for left-hand operation.
The present application is in part a continuation of my pending application Serial No. 566,- 396, filed October 2, 1931.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a door check of the class described, the combination, of a structure comprising a cylinder and a piston within the cylinder having a rod said arms, respectively, a coiled spring surround ing said pin with its ends respectively secured to said dogs, a cylindrical casing surrounding said spring with its ends supported by said dogs, one of said dogs being secured to one of said bracket arms and the other dog being secured to said casing whereby upon turning the casing in one direction the spring may be tensioned, a ring surrounding said casing and secured to one end of said structure, and means for detachably se curing said ring to the casing in different angular positions.
2. In a door check of the class described, the combination, of a structure comprising a cylinder and a piston within the cylinder having a rod extending out through one end of the cylinder, a bracket, a spring mounted on the bracket, a casing surrounding said spring and mounted for turning movement on said bracket, one end of said spring being secured to said casing and its other end being secured to said bracket whereby upon turning the casing in one direction the spring may be tensioned, and means for securing the casing and one end of said structure together having provision for adjustment to vary the angular position of said structure with relation to the casing.

In a door check of the class described, the combination, of a structure comprising a cylinder and a piston within the cylinder having a rod extending out through one end of the cylinder, a U-shaped bracket, a spring mounted between the arms of the bracket, a casing surrounding said spring and mounted for turning movement between the arms of the bracket, one end of the spring being secured to said casing and its other end being secured to said bracket whereby upon turning the casing in one direction the spring may be tensioned, and means for securing the casing to one end of said structure having provision for adjustment to vary the angular position of said structure with relation to the casing. 7
4. In a door check of the class described, the combination of a structure comprising a cylinder and'a piston within the cylinder havinga rod extending out through one end of the cylinder, a bracket, a spring mounted on the bracket, a cylindrical casing surrounding said spring and mounted for turning movement on said bracket, one end of said spring being secured to said casing and its other end being secured to said bracket, whereby upon turning the casing in one direction the spring may be tensioned, and means for securing the casing to one end of said structure comprising an annular member surrounding said casing, and means for securing said annular member in difierent angular positions to the casing.
5. In a door check of the class described, the combination, of a structure comprising a cylinder and a piston within the cylinder having a rod extending out through one end of the cylinder, a bracket, a pin secured to the bracket, dogs mounted on said pin in spaced relation, a coiled spring surrounding said pin with its end portions respectively secured to said dogs, a casing surrounding said spring and supported by said dogs, one of said dogs being secured to said bracket and the other being secured to said casing whereby upon turning the casing in one direction the spring may be tensioned, and means for securing said casing and one end of said structure, having provision for adjustment to adjust the position of said structure circumferentially of the casing.
6. In a door check of the class described, the combination of a structure comprising a cylinder and a piston within the cylinder having a rod extending out through one end of the cylinder, a bracket, a spring mounted on the bracket,
a cylindrical casing surrounding saidv spring and mounted for turning movement on said bracket, one end of said spring being secured to said casing and its other end being secured to said bracket, whereby upon turning the casing in one direction the spring may be tensioned, and means 7 7 rod extending out through one end of the cylinder, a bracket, a pin secured to the bracket, dogs mounted on said pin in spaced relation, a coiled spring surrounding said pin with its ends respectively secured to said dogs, a casing surrounding said spring and dogs, one of said dogs being secured to said bracket and the other being secured to said casing whereby upon turning the casing in one direction the spring may be tensioned, the dog secured to the bracket having a lug and the bracket having a slot for receiving the lug to secure said dog to the bracket, a sleeve surrounding said pin with its ends substantially in abutting engagement with the inner sides of said dogs, and means for securing said casing and. one end of said structure together. i r
8. The combination of a pin, a spring coiled about the pin, dogs mounted on the pin and respectively secured to the ends of said spring whereby upon relatively turning the dogs the spring may be tensioned, a member extending over the outer end face of one of the dogs, said member having a slot extending therethrough and the adjacent dog having a lug extending into the slot, and a sleeve surrounding the pin with its ends substantially in abutting engagement with the inner end faces of said dogs to prevent the dog adjacent the said member from being moved inwardly on said pin.
9. In a door check of the class described, the combination of a structure comprising a cylinder and a piston within the cylinder having a rod extending out through one end of the cylinder, a U-shaped bracket, 2, pin connecting the outer end portions of the arms of the bracket, dogs mounted to turn on said pin adjacent the inner sides of said bracket arms, one of the dogs being secured to said bracket and the other dog being rotatably fixed with relation to said structure so as to turn therewith, a coiled spring surrounding said pin with its ends respectively secured to the dogs, and means for adjusting the relative angular positions of said dogs to Vary the tension of the spring.
