When the door ls to be opened, either handle 35 or 51 will be moved so as to rotate cam shaft 26 suiciently to permit the latch member 40 to move downward to the position of Fig. 5, so that the member will be disengaged from the striker bar. In case a. handle is moved by accident to a suflicient extent to turn the shaft 26 far enough to permit the latch member to be temporarily disengaged from the striker bar and thereby permit the door to move towards open position, if the handle is immediately released, the outer tooth 66 will engage in a notch 61, formed in the top surface of member 40, so that the door will be prevented from opening further, as indicated by the dotted line position of Fig. 12. The handle must, however, be moved to a considerable extent to turn the shaft 26 far enough to permit the member 40 to be lowered at all, It will be noted that the lowest position to which the bar 62 can move is indicated in Fig. 11, in which position the links 64 are perpendicular thereto and at which point further outward movement of the bar is prevented by its engagement with the front side of the casing. 'I'he member 40 is, of course, lowered sufficiently to be disengaged from bar 62 when in this position.
In practice the striker bar 62 is made of hardened steel, while the latch member 40 is made of comparatively soft steel, so that the teeth 65 will effectively bite into the surface of the latch member in the closed position of the door. The construction will, however, be operative if the teeth 65 were omitted, and the bottom surface of the bar made smooth.
With the above described construction, when the door is in closed position, the greater the tendency to force the door open, the greater will be the force of engagement of the striker bar with the latch member, so that all tendency to force the door open will be effectively resisted. The door will also be rmly locked against opening movement in any of its closed positions, after the projection 22 rides up on to the horizontal portion of the support 6I, in which position the/ door will be rigidly supported even though it has not been closed to the fullest extent possible.
I claim:
1. A keeper for use on the jamb of a door comprising a striker bar having a horizontally disposed face on its bottom side, a pair of rigid links pivotally engaged at their lower ends with said bar and at their upper ends with the jamb, the face of said bar Vbeing arranged for engagement with the top face of a latch member mounted on the door and said bar being arranged to move inwardly and upwardly when engaged by said latch member during the closing movement of the door, and being spring actuated to move oppositely to lock the latch member against outward movement, the downward and outward movement of said bar being limited to permit the latch member to be lowered out of engagement therewith.
2. A keeper for use on the jamb of a door comprising a casing, a pair of rigid links pivotally engaged at their upper ends with said casing, and having means at their lower ends arranged for engagement with the horizontally disposed top face of a latch member projecting from the door while held at a predetermined level, said links being arranged to swing inwardly from an approximately vertical position to permit closing movement of the door and being spring actuated to swing outwardly to cause a clutch engagement between said means and latch member by the thrust action of the links, to lock the door against opening movement.
3. A keeper for use on the jamb of a door comprising a casing having a horizontally disposed supporting face arranged for engagement by a rigid projection on the door, to support a latch member thereon with its top face at a predetermined level, a rigid link pivotally engaged at its upper end with said casing and normally depending approximately vertically therefrom directly over said supporting face and having means at its lower end arranged for engagement with the said top face of the latch member, said link being arranged to swing inwardly from its normal position when engaged by the latch member on closing movement of the door and being actuated to swing outwardly to cause a clutch engagement between its said means and said latch member top face, toV lock the door against opening movement while the latch member is supported at said level.
