COMBINED EYECUP AND BOTTLE CLOSURE Filed Oct. 2, 1935 awe/whom Patented Dec. 29, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,065,501 COMBINED EYEGUP AND BOTTLE CLOSURE Application October 2, 1935, Serial No. 43,228
2 Claims.
My invention relates to a combined eye-cup and bottle closure and is intended as an improvement over the construction shown in the patent to H. J. D. Wipf, No. 787,547 of April 18, 1905.
In the manufacture of the all glass construction of the prior patent certain difiiculties are encountered in the grinding of the stopper portion to form a perfect closure for the bottle, resulting in unnecessary delay and expense in the preparation of the finished article.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a combined eye-cup and bottle closure in which is retained the convenience of use of the prior construction, at the same time obviating the manufacturing diificulties existing in the old form.
To this end, the present invention consists of a glass or other suitable material eye cup provided with means whereby it is rigidly but removably associated with a bottle closure of molded rubber or similar suitable material whereby the assembled device is used as a .unit as in the old construction, giving a glass eye-cup combined with a bottle closure which will conform to bottle necks Without the necessity of precision grinding.
Referring to the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of the device as applied to a bottle;
Fig. 2 is a cross section through the bottle closure portion;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure I viewed in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the eye cup.
Numeral 5 designates the bottle adapted to contain the eye lotion, the bottle having the usual neck 6. The device itself comprises an eye cup I of a form designed to fit that portion of the human face about the eye in order to facilitate the application of the eye lotion contained within the cup, such eye cup being provided with a depending slightly tapered shank 8, the shank carrying a member designated as a. whole by the numeral 9 and consisting of a fiat portion l0 approximately square in cross-section and larger than the round shank 8 to form an abrupt enlargement l I of such shank. From the flat portion In the member 9 gradually diminishes in size to a point I2 presenting four faces l3 separated by sharply defined junction edges M, such edges extending respectively from the corners iii of the portion Hi to the point l2, thus presenting an anchoring member approximately conoidal in shape but having its faces l3 defined by the arcs of the edges I4.
Designated as a whole by the numeral I6 is the bottle closure or stopper preferably formed of molded rubber and having a tapered circumference ll of a diameter sufiicient to provide a tight closure for the bottle neck 6, such closure or stopper having a bottle neck engaging flange l8 and a strengthening flange l9, as shown.
In the molding of the stopper or closure Hi there is provided a central recess designated as a whole by the numeral so formed as to present a tightly resilient fit for the member 9, the recess 20 being provided with faces 2| corresponding to the faces I3 of the member 9 and having sharply defined points of junction 22 between the faces 2| in order to accommodate the meeting lines of the edges M of the member 9. Recess 20 terminates at 23 to accommodate portion I2 of the member 9.
Directly above the recess 20 the closure is provided with a shoulder 24 relatively square and slightly smaller in area than the portion ll] of the member 9. Above the shoulder 24 the closure is provided with a central opening 25 having a slightly tapered wall 26, the opening 25 being slightly smaller in cross-section than the shank 8 but conforming in other respects thereto.
The closure I6 is provided with a flat base 21. The member I6 is preformed from rubber or other suitable plastic material and the eye cup I with its other features is molded from glass or other suitable material and the two portions of the unitary device are assembled by forcing the depending portions of the eye cup into the preformed receptive portions of the stopper l 6. Due to the forming of the interior portions of the stopper 16 in slightly smaller cross section than the cross section of the depending portions of the eye cup, the resilient stopper l6 will grasp such eye cup portions firmly whereby the entire device may be removed from the bottle and used as a unit for the application of the medicament, flat portion 21 being provided to permit the eye cup and its associated bottle closure to have a from, a laterally extending and depending enlargement on said shank in spaced relation to the eye cup proper, a plurality of faces on said enlargement, said faces being formed on arcs to the axis of said shank and enlargement, said faces diminishing in area to a common point, and means for jointly stoppering a bottle and supporting the eye cup comprising an elastic bottle neck closing member, said member having a recess occupied by said shank and provided with an internal shoulder engaging the en1argement of said shank, said shank and member above said internal shoulder being reduced in girth.
2. A device of the class described comprising an elastic bottle stopper, said stopper having an undercut recess below its top and an opening extending from said top to the recess, a flange extending laterally from said stopper and engageable with the top of a bottle, an eye cup extending laterally beyond the stopper, said eye cup being of rigid material having a shank depending from its bottom wall conforming in shape to and interfitted in said opening and said recess, and said stopper being externally reduced in girth between said flange and said eye cup.
