2 Claims.
This invention relates in general to a stove having a burner box for receiving the gas burner which is shielded from the coal fiues surrounding the oven and has more particular reference 5 to a baflle plate for improving the draft and the flue passage.
In a combination range having an oven separated from a gas burner box by a flue'from the re pot for heating the oven, the location of the l burner box top forms a rather deep pocket directly back of the fire box which is detrimental to the draft of the range retarding the travel of the heating gases through the proper flue channels.
In order to overcome the effect of this pocket a l baille plate is provided which extends as a continuation of the flue below the burner box and extends below the top of the stove so that all the heat from the fire box enters directly into this channel and there is no further interference or retardation of the draft when the baiiie plate is installed.
An important object of the invention is therefore in the extension of the ilue for keeping the flue dimensions of proper size throughout their passage above the oven.
A further object of the invention is in protecting the top of the range from becoming overheated which is frequently the case where the large pocket is provided directly back of the re box.
A still further object of the invention is in protecting the adjacent end of the burner box from becoming overheated by the direct heat from the fire box if permitted to strike the adjacent end of the burner box which is usually finished in enamel and is easily destroyed by excessive heat.
A still further object of the invention is in the provision of a baie plate shaped to conform to the flue passage and supported in place without engaging the range top but allowing suicient space below the top for the circulation of heat under the lids of the range for cooking purposes.
A still further object of the invention is in improving the performance and efiiciency of the range by means of a baffle plate.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter, the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, a
combination range is shown as having a iire box 5 in which a fire pot and dumping grates 'I are conventionally represented with end walls 8 and 9, a bottom It supported by the base I I and legs i2. Within the range is a transverse partition I3 forming the other wall of the fire box and an oven 5 having top, end and bottom walls I4, I5 and I 6 respectively which is spaced below the burner box I 'I at the top forming a flue I8 leading from the top of the fire box over the top of the oven and downwardly at the end below the bottom to the bottom 10 of the discharge flue or stack I9 which carries the gases away. The top 2i! of the range has a conventional sectional cover, with lids 2I over the re box, lids 22 over the burner box and lids 23 over a pocket 2d located between the upper end 15 of the fire box 5, the adjacent end of the burner box I'I and the top E4 of the oven. This pocket is an enlargement of the flue I8 and is detrimental to the draft by retarding the ow of the hot gases which must rst lill up this pocket so that 20 in effect the pocket causes a swirl, drag or a partial vacuum in retarding the travel of the gases about the oven.
Another effect of this pocket is unduly to heat the end of the burner box I'I adjacent thereto 25 and to unduly heat the top directly above the pocket.
In order to overcome the effect of this pocket 2li a bafe plate 25 is inserted within the pocket having a lip or offset 26 along the lower edge to 30 extend below the adjacent edge of the burner box I'I and rounded upwardly at the opposite edge to extend adjacent but short of the top 2U as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, conforming also to the flue I8 at this point and' making it a continuation of 35 the flue between the top of the oven and the bottom of the burner box I'I.
In order to hold this deector plate in position a support 2l is attached to the underside of the bafie plate by a bolt 28 or other suitable fasten- 40 ing means and preferably has opposite legs engaging a projection 29 cast in the top I4 of the oven and the other leg engaging the lower end of an angle plate 30 set in between the top of the oven and the upper edge of the partition 45 wall I3 which is held in place by a projection 3I at the top of the oven.
Either one or both ends of the bafe plate 25 may be rounded off as indicated at 32 in Fig. 1 or the baffle plate may be terminated short of 50 the front or back wall of the range as therein shown so that any gas accumulating above the baffle plate will find its way into the main flue of the range.
With this construction the objectionable space 55 or pocket is eliminated, the flue is made of substantially continuous size or uniform cross section from the top of the fire pot and sufficient space is afforded between the upper edge of the deflector plate and the top of the range for circulating suiicient heat under the lids 23 of the range for cooking purposes.
With this construction there is no danger of overheating either the lids 23 or the end of the burner box l1 and there is no delay or retardation of the passage of the flue gases and the oven is heated more quickly and more positively without loss of heat and, therefore, with greater eiiiciency.
While this bafle plate is described in connection with a range of this type, it is obvious that a similar construction may be employed for eliminating iiue pockets of this kind wherever they may be located.
I claim:
1. In a stove the combination with a re box, a burner box and an oven forming a pocket above the oven and between the burner box and the re box with a ue of smaller size leading therefrom across the top of the oven, a stove top extending across the top of the pocket and a delector plate extending from the lower adjacent edge of the burner box upwardly across the pocket toward the top of the fire box but terminating short of the stove top to allow heating gases to reach the stove top above the top of the deector plate.
2. In a combination range a fire box, a burner box and an oven, together forming a pocket between them and the top of the stove With a flue leading therefrom between the burner box and the oven, a baie plate extending from the lower edge of the burner box in said pocket upwardly toward the upper edge of the fire box, the end of the plate terminating short of the side of the stove to allow any gases accumulating above the plate to find their way to the flue around the end of the plate.
