4'1 Claims.
This invention relates to a web supply mechanism for a printing-machine and more particularly to a manually operated web replacement mechanism for use in joining the web of a replacement roll to the web of an expiring web roll without interfering with the continuous press operation.
One .object of the invention is to provide an im: proved means for manually moving a web deflecting and cutting mechanism, of the type disclosed in a copending application Serial No. 700,652 into a position which will cause a web pasting and cutting operation to occur.
Another object is to provide a mechanism whereby the web end of the replacement roll may be mechanically clamped to the body of said roll preparatory to making a join and means for releasing the clamp at the time a join is being made.
In regard to the latter object, which is one of o the main features of the invention, fingers have been provided which are adapted to be moved into clamped engagement with the web end of the replacement roll and rotate with the web roll when said roll is being accelerated to a speed corresponding to the speed of the running web roll. After such speed is attained and the web on the running web roll has become nearly depleted, an obstruction is moved into the path of the clamping mechanism which will cause a pro jecting member to engage same and release the said fingers from their clamped engagement with the web at the time a join is being made.
With the above and other objects not specifically referred to in view, the invention consists in certain novel arrangements and combinations which will be fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.

Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the general structure of the web supply mechanism and of the web jolningand cutting mechanism includes a web roll supporting reel 25 rotatably mounted on suitable supports 26 and having arms extending therefrom upon which web rolls are supported on short shafts or spindles 21 which engage the core of the roll, in accordance with the, general practice. Above the reel 25 is a driven belt 28 which is adapted to engage the periphery of the running web rollto drive same at a speed corresponding with the-speed of the printing machine and to accelerate, the speed of a web replacement roll-to that of the running web, when said replacement roll is moved into contact therewith, before a join is made between the running web end and' the web end of the replacement roll. In
each of the Figures 1 and 2 the reel 25 is shown with a replacement roll 29 in engagement with the belt drive and'an expiring roll 3i in a web joining position, the latter having been moved from the position which is occupied by the replacement roll, by a motor drive or any other suitable driving means (not shown).
A web Joining and cutting mechanism is shown as having been moved to a web joining and cutting position, which mechanism comprisesa web deflecting frame 32, having a brush 33- mounted thereon, and a cutter frame 34 having a cutter blade 35 mounted at the lower end thereof, each of which frames are pivotally movable preferably about the same axial center. -In the mechanism shown, the pivotal mounting for said frames includes a sleeve 35, carried by bearing brackets 31 depending from the machine frame, upon which the'cutter frame 34 is mounted. A shaft 38 is 700,652; therefore only such parts as embody features of the present invention will be described in detail in this specification.
It is to be noted that the cutter frame 34 will be maintained in a fixed position, when either in a raised or a lowered position, by means of a pawl 34a which is secured to a shaft 38 that is rotatably supported in the frame 34. The pawl is adapted to engage suitable recesses 31a 31a in the stationary supporting bracket 31, and is biased into engagement with the recesses by a spring 39a. A handle 49 secured to the shaft 38 provides means for releasing the pawl 34a.
After a running web roll 3i has been reduced nearly to exhaustion, the reel is rotated to move the running web W into the path of the web deflecting and cutting mechanism and the web replacement roll is moved into engagement with the belt mechanism 28. The web deflecting and cutting mechanism is then moved froma normal- 1y raised position to the operating position shown in Figure 3, and as soon as the running web roll reaches the point of almost complete exhaustion,

Said plunger rod 42 is maintained in a normally raised position by means of a spring 46, compressed between a collar 41' on he link 44, and a supporting lug 43 on the leve 39, which thereby holds the upper end of engagement with the shaft 38 and will be adapt-' ed to move the said shaft to raise or lower the web deflecting frame attached thereto or to move said frame to a web Joining position.
The position shown in Figure 3 indicates the pre-joining and pre-cutting position of web deflecting and cutting frames, the frames having previously been moved there from their normal raised position. Before the final web joining and cutting operations are performed, the attendant will release theplunger rod 42 by grasping a handle formed at the lower'end of the lever 39, and the free end of the bell crank 45, to thereby rock said bell crank about its pivot, and withdraw the end of the rod'42 from a. slot 49. The

Another rod 52 is slidably mounted in a lug 53, projecting from the lever 39, and in the handle 5|, and has a spring 54 compressed between a collar 55 on said rodand the lug 53, which spring forces the rod 52 outward. A stop collar 56 secured to the rod 52, limits the extent of projection of the lower end of the rod 52 beyond the end of the handle 5i. A circuit'closing switch 51 is secured to the lever 39, above the rod 52,
and has a push button 58 projecting beiow same in the path of the rod 52, which button is adapted .to be engaged by the rod 52 when the said rod is pushed inward to close the switch. f
A beam 59, which supports the brush 33 and forms apart of the web deflecting frame 32, also has bearings 5| mounted at the bottom thereof, one of which bearings is shown in Figure 4. A shaft 62 is rotatably mounted in said bearings GI and has a plurality of flapper levers 63 secured thereto and properly positioned to permit operation with full length, half length or three-quarter length web rolls. A second lever 54 is also secured to the shaft 52 and a connecting link 55 is connected to the lever. 64 and to a cutter blade releasing lever 61. Said, lever 81 is secured to a shaft 68 carried in bearings 69 at the lower end of the cutter frame 34, and is adapted to rock said shaft 68 to actuate a cutter bladereleasing latch (not shown). As stated, the web deflecting frame and cutter frame are shown in a pre-joining and Dre-cutting position in Figure 3, but will have no effect upon the movement of the running web until the web deflecting frame is moved forward to bring the running web into contact with the replacement roll. Also, when said web deflecting frame is moved forward, the flapper lever will be ,moved into the path of a web clamp mechanism hereinafter described, which is rotating with the web replacement roll.
It will be observed that both the web deflecting frame 32 and the cutter frame 34 will be moved (6 as one unit from their normal or raised position to the position shown in Figure 3 and will be returned in the same manner by the manual actuation of the hand'lever 38. To assist this unison of movement, a 'rod I2 is joined to the web deflecting frame 32 and is loosely mounted in an opening in the cutter frame 34, a stop collar I8 being secured to the opposite end thereof to provide-a limiting stop but to allow suflicient movement between both of said .frames to provide means whereby the web deflecting frame may also be moved independently of the cutter'frame a limited distance. A spring I4, having one end attached to the web deflecting franie'and one end attached to the cutter frame, will hold the two frames in a definite normal relation to each other. Therefore, the' web deflecting frame,
. which is free to move, will be drawn toward the stationary cutter frame 34 by the spring 14, or
mother words, will be biased away from the running web and will remain so until it is manually moved to deflect the running web against the replacement roll, when making a web join.
In Figures 1 and 5, an arrangement is shown in which a flapper lever 63a is adjustably secured to a shaft 62a and said shaft is rotatably mounted inbearings I5 onbrackets I6,secured to the upper surface of the beam 58. An abutment bar 31 is secured to the brackets I6 and has rubber pads I8 fixed thereto, which are adapted to be engaged by the flapper lever 63a. A long connecting link 65a connects a lever 640. secured to the shaft 62a with the cutter blade releasing lever6-I just as in the structure shown in Figure 8.
It is 1 to be noted that the structure of the flapper lever 63' and mounting therefor, as shown in Figures 3 and 4 will be actuated by the web clamping mechanism shown in Figures 2 and 14 and the flapper structure shown in Figure 5 will be actuated by the clamping mechanism shown in Figures 1, 6 and 9. In the Figure 5 structure, the flapper lever 63a projects beyond the path of the web and it is therefore made adjustableon'the rod 62a to permit operation with web rolls varying in length.
Referring now to the form of clamping mechanism for holding the' web end of the web replacement roll against the periphery of "the roll as shown in Figure 1 and more clearly inFigures 6 to 13; a clamp supporting bar I8, having a scale 88 thereon, is slidably mounted within, a split end of a bracket 8| and said bracket is pivotally mounted on pins 82-82, said pins being secured within ears 83, 83 projecting outward from a sleeve 84. Said sleeve is rotatably mounted on a collar 85, one of which is secured to the end of each arm on the reel 25, by meansof screws 86.

The bar I8 is adapted to be clamped within the bracket 8| by means of a lever 84, which is pivotally mounted in walls 85, 85, extendingoutwardly therefrom. The mounting for said lever 84, comprisesa stud having a square central portion 86 which is adapted to fit in a similarly shaped opening in the lever and has threaded extensions 8'I, 81 at eachside thereof, with threads of opposite hand thereon, as shown in Figure 13. Nuts 88, 88 are fixed withinthe walls 85, 85 and are engaged by the threaded ends of the stud; therefore, any rotation of the stud will either spread the walls 85 apart or draw them together, which condition will cause the bar I8 to be fixed when in a clamped position or movable when in an unclamped position.
A web clamping device is mounted at the upper end of the bar I8 as is clearly shown in Figures 6 and 7, also in the detailed views 9 to 12 inclusive. Said device comprises a bracket I8I, which is fixed to the top of the bar, 18 by rivets or in any other suitable manner and has a rocker plate I82 pivotally mounted around a shouldered screw I83 on the upper surface thereof. A fiat, preferably flexible, plate I84, is secured to a raised edge I85, and, as shown, has two fingers I86, I86 formed thereon, each of whichfingers may, if desired, have a friction sleeve I 81 of rubber or the like thereon.
A bolt I88 is slidably mounted within a slot I88 extending through one side of the bracket IM and is retained in position by means of a gib I I8. Said bolt has a stud screwed therein at I I I, which stud has an enlarged head portion II2, passing through a straight slotted opening H3 in the upits outward position and the flange H5 is in engagement with the groove II 6 in the stud and the entire clamp becomes one'rigid unit, but immediately after the bolt is moved inward, the stud is released and moves within the slot H4. The pressure therefore, upon the fingers I86, will be released since the rocker plate will be permitted to move upward over the upper portion of the head I I2. Upon further inward movement of the bolt, the rocker plate I82 will be swung outward by the engagement of the studhead II2 with the curved slot II4, to thereby withdraw the fingers I86 beyond the end of the web roll, the parts then being in position, shown in Figure 10. At the instant the pressure on the fingers I86 is released the spring 83 on the bracket 8| will become effective andwill swing the bracket 8| about the pivot pins 82 to thereby swing the upper end of the clamping bar I8 outward.
When setting up the above described clamping device the following operations are performed:
After a replacement 'roll is mounted on the reel 25, theciamping mechanism is arranged to first extend the fingers I86 over the end of the replacement roll, then the clamping bar I8 is forced downward within the bracket 8| to' bring the fingers I 86' into a tightly clamped engagement with the web end of the replacement roll. The
lever 84 is then actuated to rotate the screw threaded ends 8'I8'I which will clamp the bar 18 within the bracket 8| and thus leave the. clamp- I ing device in the position shown in Figures 6 and '7. This same operation will be repeated on the opposite end of the web roll, after which an adhesive will be applied to the web end of the replacement roll in any desirable manner.
After the replacement roll has been prepared in this manner,. the next operation will be to rotate with the reel. With this arrangement, the attendan't will move the reel until the pointer reaches the index line which corresponds with the position of the'scale 88 on the clamping bar, in relation to the upper edge 8| a of the bracket 8I. When the readings of the index H8 and the scale 88 correspond, the replacement roll will be in a correct relation to the. web joining mechanism.
The attendant will then bring the web deflecting and web cutting mechanism from a normally raised to the pre-joining and pre-cutting position shown in Figure3. The hand lever 39 is now returned to a horizontal position as in Figure 20 with the" rod 42 in engagement with a slot 49, and as soon as the running web roll has reached a point of almost complete exhaustion, the attendant will depress the projecting end of the rod 52 while gripping and pulling downward on the handle 5|, and move the rod 52 into contact with the button 58 to close the switch 51. Before the web deflecting frame can be moved to a web joining position by the hand lever- 39, however, the adhesive portion on the web end of the replacement roll. must be in the correct relation to the brush 33, so that at the time the brush forces the running web against the web roll, the adhesive end of the replacement roll will be approaching the brushes and when it will adhere to the running web and thereby make a web join.
To control the position of the web end of the replacement roll in relation'to the movement of the brush 33 on the Web deflecting frame 32, the
said frame 32 is maintained in a stationary position by means of a solenoid actuated latch mechanism, the location of which is indicated at II1,

Upon the release of the latch, the attendant will then be permitted to pull the hand lever 39 downward to swing the web deflecting frame forward against the running web, in time to meet the approaching adhesive portion on the replacement roll, to make a join therewith.
In moving the web deflecting frame forward, the flapper lever 63a willmove directly into the path of the bolt I88 on the clamping device and will be engaged by same during the rotation of the web roll. I
The impact of the bolt against the flapper lever will cause two things to happen, flrst the bolt I88 will be driven inward to release the clamping fingers from their engagement with the web end of the replacement web roll and withdraw same beyond the end of the roll, and second, the flapper lever will be rocked around its-pivot, the action of which will rock the cutter blade releasing lever 61 when the connecting rod 65a,is pulled upward. This will happen immediately after the web join is made and cause the running web to be severed immediately below the join.
Another form of clamping device for clamping the web end of the replacement roll is shown in Figures 2 and 14 to 19 which comprises a bracket I2I, secured to the upper end '01 a clamp supporting bar 19a, within which a bolt I22, having a projecting head128, is slidably mounted in an opening I23 in the side thereof, said bolt being retained in the opening by means of a gib I 24. Two cam portions I25 and I26 are formed in the upper surface of the bolt. 9
A plate I21 having lugs I28 projecting from the sides thereof, is adapted to slide within grooved walls I29 of a transverse recess I3I, provided in the upper surface of the bracket I2I. Two pins I32 and I33, projecting from the lower surface of the plate I21, are adapted to engage the cam grooves I 25 and I 26 respectively in the upper surface of the bolt I22.
On the upper surface of the plate I21, a flexible plate I34 is mounted, and has flngers I35 projecting therefrom. which are adapted to be brought into clamping engagement with the web roll in a manner similar to that of the previously described clamp. Friction sleeves I36 may be supplied to provide a frictional grip on the web roll.
In operation this'form of clamp will be set up in clamped engagement 'with the web roll in a manner similar to the'previously described clamp and the bolt will be .set in its innermost position as indicated in Figures 14 and 15.
In Figures 14 to 16 the fingers are shown in a clamped engagement with the web roll. When in this position the bolt I22 is in its innermost location with the head I28 engaging a shoulder I38. on the bracket I21, and the plate I21 is in a slightly inclined position, having been rocked about the lugs I28 as a pivot, by the movement of the outer pin I33 on the raised portion of the cam surface I26. The flexible plate is therefore flexed while in the clamped position but when the bolt is kicked back by the engagement of the flapper lever with the head I28 to release the clamp, plate I21 will return to its normal flat position. Y
When a web join is to be made with the latter arrangement, the web deflecting frame is moved toward the web replacement roll, which thus moves the flapper lever 63 into the path of the projecting head I28 on the bolt I22, and when they engage, the bolt I22 is moved outward until the flapper lever 63 engages a stop-lug I31, formed at the upper endof the clamp supporting bar 19. As the bolt moves outward, the pin I33 will first move downward on the inclined cam surface I26 to release the fingers I35 from con tact with the web roll and the-pin I32 will move through the curved portion of the cam slot I25 to ixrithdraw the fingers I35 from the path of the rol It is obvious from the foregoing description of the clamps that a decided improvement has been made in the method of clamping the web end of a web replacement roll to the body thereof.

Referring now to the electrical diagram, Figure 20'shows'a circuit that may be traced from oneside of the line marked (LI) through normally open switoh 51, conductor I4I, latch solenoid II1,- conductor I42, to one contact ring I43. Also from the other side of the line marked (L2) to a second contact ring I44. This will bring a source of current to the rings I43, I44 whenthe switch 51 is closed. The said rings may be mounted in any convenient manner at the axis of the reel 25 and will rotate with said reel. Brushes I40I40, joined to the lines L2 and I42, engage the contact rings I43, I44.
On each arm of the reel 25, a mercury switch I45 is mounted in such position as to close a pair of contacts I39I39 when the replacement roll is in a web joining position and is connected in series with a cam actuated switch 92. cuit which connects said switches I45 and 92 with the current supply, is traced from ring I43, through conductor I46, then through switch I45, line I41, switch 92 and line I48, to the ring I44.
Assuming that the parts are in the position shown in Figure 20 and the attendant has closed the switch 51, while pulling downward on the hand lever 39, the latch releasing solenoid II1 will then be energized as soon as the cam portion on the ring 89 engages the finger 9| to close the switch 92. Immediately upon the release of the solenoidactuated latch II1, the web'deflect- The ciring brush will be moved inward to thus move the running web against the replacement roll, and when the bolt of the web clamping mechanism engages the flapper mechanism, the web cutting mechanism will be actuated to sever the running web below the join.
In Figure 21 a foot treadle arrangement is shown for moving the web deflecting frame into a web joining position, also a modified form of electrical circuit. The treadle mechanism comprises a treadle I5I pivotally mounted on suitable bearings I52, which is connected to an arm I53, projecting from the web deflecting frame, by means of a connecting link I 54. Said arm I53 is'positioned so as to permit the web deflecting frame to be swung about its axis to "a web joining position.
The treadle is so arranged as to permit an attendant to conveniently step on same and at the same time to also permit him to press a push button I55 positioned within reach of said attendant. As shown in Figure 21, one push button I55 is shown on each arm of the reel 25 and each is wired in the electrical circuit in the same manner as the mercury switch I45 of Figure 20. The wiring arrangement from the supply through the latch releasing solenoid H1 and to the con-' previously described for Figure 21 except that the switch 51 is omitted. The circuit up to the contact rings is now a closed circuit and is completed to actuate the latch solenoid II1, when the switch 92 is closed and the push button I55 is pressed. When the said circuit is completed to provide an arrangement similar to that shown in Figure 20 by substituting a foot actuated switch closing means for the hand actuated switch 51. Said arrangement is shown clearly in Figure 22 and comprises a treadle arm I66 pivotally mounted on a support I6I, which arm has a connecting link I54a to connect same with the deflecting frame 32 as shown in Figure 21. A switch I62, mounted upon the base of the sup-- port, has an actuating lever I63 extending from one side thereof which is adapted to throw the switch from a ncrmally open to a closed position when actuated.
The means for actuating said lever I63 comprises a button I64, slidably mounted within a foot pedal I65, which button rests upon one arm I66 of a bell crank and is normally held in a raised position by the action of a spring I61 at tached to another arm I68 of said bell crank. A bar I69 has one end joined to the lower end of the arm I68 and is guided by means of the engagement of a pin I1I within a slot I12 in said bar, which directs the movement of the free end of the bar toward the switch actuating lever I63.
When operating the web deflecting and cutting mechanism with a foot treadle arrangement of the above described .type it is only necessary for an attendant to place one foot on the pedal I65, which action will closev the switch I62 through the movement of the bell crank and bar when the button I64 is forced downward. Having closed the circuit up to the switch 92 (Figure 20) in this manner, the complete closure of the circuit is efifected when the switch 92 is closed, whereupon the latch I I1 is released and the web deflector frame is swung to a web joining posi-- tion by the continued downward pressure of the attendants fc'ot upon the treadle. Upon the release of the attendants foot from the pedal I65, the button I64 and 'parts cooperating therewith will bereturned 'to their normal position by the action of the spring I61 and the switch actuatoperating upon a web drawn from a web roll, a

In a web supply mechanism for a machine operating upon a web, a support having a running web roll and replacement roll thereon and movable to bring the replacement roll into a web feeding position, means to accelerate the replacement roll, a manually movable web clamping mechanism positioned at the end of the web replacement roll and rotatable therewith, a projecting finger portion on said clamping mechanism to engage the free end of the web and hold same in clamped contact with the body of the roll, a slidable bolt cooperating with said projecting finger portion, a web joining mechanism adapted to move the running web into engagement with the peripheral surface of the replacement roll to thereby join same with an adhesive portion thereon, and means movable into the path of the sliding bolt to move same and release the projecting finger portion of the clamp at the time a join is being made.

In a web supply mechanism for a machine operating upon a web, a support having a running web roll and replacement roll thereon and movable to bring the replacement roll into a web supply position, means to accelerate the replacement roll, a manually movable web clamping mechanism positioned at the end of the replacement roll and rotatable therewith, a projecting finger portion on said clamping mechanism to engage the free end of the web and hold same in a clamped contact with the body 'of the roll, a slidable bolt cooperating-with said projecting finger portion, a web deflecting mechanism manually movable to press the running web against the peripheral surface of the replacement roll to thereby oin same with an adhesive portion thereon, a web cutting mechanism, a projecting member movable with said web deflecting mechanism into the path of said bolt; and a link between said projecting member and web cutting mechanism, whereby upon engagement of the bolt with said projecting member, the finger clamping portion is released and the cutting mechanism is actuated.

In a web supply mechanism for a machine operating upon a web, a support having a running web roll and a replacement roll thereon, a web deflecting member to move the rimning web against the replacement roll, manually actuated means to move said web deflecting member, a latch member to normally prevent moving said web deflecting member, an electromagnet' to release said latch, and a switch member operable from said manually actuated means to close an electrical circuit and thereby energize said magnet.
