UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE chinery Company, tion of Massachusetts Chicago, Ill., a corpora- Application August 11, 1933, serial No. $4,707 3s claims. (c1. 26a-2s) My invention relates to mining machines and, in particular, to coal mining machines adapted to cut kerfs in a coal seam.
An object of my invention is to provide a compact and durable coal mining machine capable of being easily maneuvered and adjustable to cut either vertical or horizontal kerfs on any level in a rapid and etlicient manner.
Another object is to provide a coal mining machine, the major movements of which are actuated by fluid pressure devices. A
Another object is to provide such a machine with a simple, efficient and compact valve system, and with centrally arranged controls at the rear of the machine away from any danger of falling coal, and yet within the reach of a single operator.
Another object is to provide an arrangement of walking jacks whereby the machine may be readily advanced or turned in a small space.
Another object is to provide a vertically yieldable mounting arrangement for the cutter blade and chain.

General construction summarized In general the coal mining machine of my invention in its preferred rform consists of a subframe or skid plate on a main frame reciprocable *relatively thereto vby hydraulic cylinders. On the main frame *is mounted hydraulically operated elevating mechanism culminating in a-cutter blade having an is independently tiltable `by 'a `hydraulic cylinder. Power transmission mechanism 1. connects` this cutter head with an electric motor mounted on the main frame, and further transmission mechanism connects the motorwith a pair ofvfeeding drums at the rear of the machine; On either side of the machine is placed a hydraulic jack known as a walking jack for: purposes Connected with the motorl isa fluid` pressure pump from which box at the rear of the machine to the various hydraulic cylinders.
