Application May 22, 1935, Serial No. 22,919
4 Claims.
This invention relates to periodical holders or paper weights particularly adapted for use in the display and vending of newspapers and other periodicals.
The primary object of our invention is to provide a periodical holder of simple and rugged construction, particularly effective in holding the stacks of newspapers and the like in a neat orderly manner to prevent the same from becoming deranged by a sudden gust of wind.
A further object of our invention is to provide a device of the character indicated which may be collapsed when its use is not required, the construction of which facilitates the conspicuous display of such advertising matter as may be desired.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of the application, with the understanding, however, that the improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therein as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of our device in use in conjunction with the sale of newspapers; and
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of our device partly collapsed.
To attain the various objects of our invention a novel arrangement and construction of elements is provided the physical embodiment of which is illustrated in the drawing and which comprises in general a base or platform, a flexible weight member adapted to rest upon peridicals on the base and a weight retaining bracket swingably mounted on the base and carrying a slidable connection to the weight member.
Referring now to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, the numeral 3 indicates the base of our device which embodies a substantially flat bottom or suitable frame structure of a size adequate to contain the desired number of periodicals. On the upper surface of the base 3 is swingably attached a pair of parallel bars 4 connected at one end by a cross bar 5. The free ends of the bars 4 are bent at right angles in opposed directions to each other to form aligned portions 6 adapted to engage in suitable eyelets secured to the base 3. The aligned portions 6 are again bent at right angles to form protruding members 8 which, when the parallel bars 4 are perpendicular to the base 3, are in contact with the base 3 by which to prevent the swinging of bars 4 beyond the vertical position thereof. A flexible weight member 9 connected to the bars 4 comprises a plurality of weighted blocks l flexibly connected at their ends to each other by links I l and the pins I2 which pass thru both the blocks l0 and the links II. The structure of the weighted member 9 as just described provides for the flexing of same only in a vertical plane in that the links H are disposed perpendicularly and are engaged in suitably arranged slots in the weighted blocks ID. The flexible character of the member 9 permits of its contact with the topmost periodical of the vario'us stacks regardless of the height of the stack.
One end of the member 9 is slidably secured to the base 3 by means of a cross head 13 which passes thru an aperture in the end block l0 and is provided at each end with eyelets adapted to respectively encircle the parallel bars 4. The arrangement of the cross head I3 permits the swinging of the weighted member on it and also allows the respective end of the weight member 9 to rest on the topmost periodical.
Reference to Fig. 2 indicates how the member 9 may be folded up when the device is not in use, it being obvious that the bars 4 may be swung against the base 3 to further reduce the size of the device when in storage.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a standard and a linear series of weights hingedly connected together, said series being attached to said standard so as to be moved vertically, said weights being so connected together as to be swung in a vertical plane relative to each other.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a standard and a series of weights hingedly connected together, said series being attached to said standard, and a base on which said standard is pivotally mounted.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a standard and a linear series of weights hingedly connected together, said series being attached to said standard so as to be moved vertically, said Weights being so connected together as to be swung in a vertical plane relative to each other, and a base on which said standard is pivotally mounted.
4. A device of the character described comprising a rectangular base. a standard hingedly connected at one end of said base, said standard comprising a pair of arms connected together at their upper ends, a series of weights hingedly connected togethen and means carried by one of said weights for slidably connecting the same to said standard.
