3 Claims.
,This invention relates to paper boxes and a method of making them and is a division of an application filed byme on June 13,' 1935, Serial Number 26,478. i
An object of the present invention is to form a rigid box out of a foldable blank wherein the end aps are foldable over and placed astride inturned side wings but in the present instance it is 'an object-to so design the foldable end flaps that afterthey have been properly positioned during lthe completion of the box, well finished side edges will be presented by the outer thick'- nessesof the end ilaps, instead of raw unsightly' edgessuch as heretofore exposed.
A further object is to so l'cut the end folds of vthe blank that portions thereof can be utilized as reinforcements of the corners of the finished box. With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the
a blank used in -the manufacture of the box.
Figure 2 is a similar View of said end portion following the inturning'of the side ears of the end ap. l
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one .corner portion of the completed boxmade from tlev blank illustrated in Figure 2. l
Figure 4 is ahorizontal section on Figure 3. v v
Referring to the guresfby characters of reference, I3 is the bottom portion of a blank divided by scores I4 from side portions I5, foldable end flaps I6 and side wings II. The side wings are divided from end ila-ps IG by slits I8 which extend back into the blank from the ends thereof. These slits are so shaped and -located that each side wing `I1 is made up of a narrow free end portion or tongue the rear portion of the'inner side edge of which is curved laterally to one corner of the bottom Il. 'I'hus ears are formed at the sides of each end flap I6 and extend up to the wings I'I, following the contour of the inneredges thereof. The ears at each side and which have been indicated at I0 and 20, are separated by a transverse Figure 1 is a plan view of one end portion of slit 2| alining with the score 22 along which flap I6 is adapted to be folded. A suitable adhesive 23 is applied to one surface of the flap I6 betweenthe score 22and the end of the flap and this adhesive also extends over the corresponding surface of 5 each of the ears I9 and 20.
Following the cutting and creasing of the blank the side ears I9 which constitute finishing ears for the end flaps I6 are folded toward each other so as to lap and be affixed to the end flaps as 1o shown in Figure 2. The side portions I5 are then extended perpendicular to the bottom portion I3 and the side wings Il are'extended toward each other. Thereafter the end aps I6 each of which appears as in Figure 2, are folded upwardly over l5 the inturned side Wings so that the finishing ears I9 `as well as the side Wings will thus be stradd1ed` by the'end flaps. The side ears 20, however, will be permitted to extend along the inner surfaces of the side portions I5 as shown in Figures 3 and4` 20l where they will be joined to the side portions by the ladhesive and thus constitute reinforcing ears.
As a result of the Lconstruction described not only will the side edges of the outer thicknesses of the'end aps presentnished rounded surfaces- 25 formed by the finishing paper 24 on the outer surface Vof the blank butthe ears 20 extending inwardly from the end flaps and affixed to the side portions I5 will impart added strength to the corners of the box.
It is to be understood that the term ,box as herein used has reference to either the body portion or the lid-of a box because both of these parts can be constructed in the manner disclosed.
In order that the top edges ofthe folded end '35 flaps may lie in the same plane with the top edges of the side walls, it is generally desirable tocut j away portions of the top edges of the side wings line 4-4 as indicated at 40 so as to allow the end flaps and their inturned ears to be properly located.
What is claimed is:
v1. A paper box formed o f a blank of paper board having one surface coated with finishing paper,v said blank being shaped to provide side r walls, side wings, end aps, and oppos'ed pairs of 45 side ears on the end flaps extending the full length of the flaps, said ears abutting, one. side ear of each pair being inturned, said inturned ears being extended toward each other, and the end flaps being folded over and afiixed to the side wings 50 thereby to conceal the raw edges of the inturned ears between the folds of the end ilaps, the other lears on each'end flap lapping and being affixed ,to the side walls and extending tothe top edg'es thereof. y Y
2. A paper box including a blank of paper board having one surface coated with a thickness oi' nishing paper, said blank being shaped to provide side walls, side wings. foldable end flaps, and a pair of abutting outer and inner ears at each side of each end ap, each pair extending the entire length of the flap, said side wings being extended toward each other and said end flaps straddlng and being afxed to the inturned side wings, the inner ear of each pair being extended between the folds of the end ap, thereby to conceal its raw edges, and the outer ears of the end flaps being extended away from the' folded end naps and amxed to' and extending to the top edges of the adjacent side portions of the blank.
3. A paper box formed of a single blank shaped toprovide bottom and side portions, side wings and foidable end iiaps, there being a finishing ear and a reinforcing ear at each side of each ap, said ears abutting and forming pairs extending throughoutthe length of each end ap, said 11nishing ears being folded onteand aflxed to the side portions of the end ap and said end iiaps each being folded into position astride o'f the side wings and aixed thereto to conceal the finishing ears, and said reinforcing ears being extended away from the end aps and amxed to the sides to stiien the corners of the box.
