Definitions

  • This invention relates to tobacco pipes of the kind comprising an outer bowl in which is positioned an inner bowl to receive the tobacco and has more particular reference to pipes of this kind in which the inner bowl is open-ended and the tobacco is supported on a protuberance projecting from the base of the outer bowl into the open end of the inner bowl.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide a pipe of this character which will burn well even when tightly filled with finely cut tobacco and at the same time to cool the smoke without the occurence of moist depositions in the bowl of the pipe itself.
  • the inner bowl and the outer bowl together with its projection are so dimensioned and arranged that an annular gap of constant cross section is formed between the projection and the lower end of the inner bowl and a further narrow annular cavity is formed between the inner bowl and the inner wall of the outer bowl of the pipe so that the smoke passes through the first annular gap and about the lower edge of the inner bowl to the second annular gap from whence a channel leads to the mouth piece of the pipe.
  • Fig. 1 shows a vertical longitudinal section
  • Fig. 2 a horizontal section along the line AB of Fig. 1,
  • Figs. 3 and 4 central sections through the outer bowl of the pipe and through the removable open ended inner bowl respectively.
  • the open ended inner bowl b is introduced into the outer bowl a of the pipe in such manner that its lower end embraces the cylindrical projection c at the bottom of the outer bowl of the pipe and leaves a small annular gap of uniform width between the inner wall of the inner bowl and the periphery of the projection.
  • the inner bowl b has a conically widening portion or disposed beneath the outer marginal rim 6 and the conical portion fits in a corresponding taper in the outer bowl a of the pipe.
  • the smoke is drawn in the usual way through a mouth piece h which is inserted in the socket i of the outer bowl o
  • the other end of the mouth piece may be circular or of flattened cross-section as indicated in Fig. 2.
  • a smoke passage is leads from the highest point of the cavity of the socket i for the mouth piece it upwardly to close beneath the seating for the conical portion cl of the open ended inner bowl b and there terminates in the narrow annular gap between the inner bowl b and the outer bowl a.
  • annular groove Z is provided immediately in front of the point where the smoke passes into the smoke conduit is.
  • groove 1 is shown as provided in the inner wall of the outer bowl 0. but it could equally well be provided in the outer wall of the inner bowl b.
  • the annular groove 9 in the base of the outer bowl u; of the pipe has the same efiect in respect of equalization of pressure and smoke distribution in the narrow annular channel between the inner bowl I) and the projection c as does the annular groove 1 with respect to the narrow annular cavity between the inner bowl b and the inner wall of the outer bowl a.
  • the socket i is provided with a cavity materially larger than the end of the mouthpiece which is introduced into the socket. As seen from the drawing, this results in a chamber in which any depositions can collect. After removing the mouthpiece the matter collecting in this chamber can readily be removed.
  • a smoking pipe comprising a cylindrical outer bowl provided with a mouthpiece receiving socket and a mouthpiece positioned in said socket, an upstanding projection positioned centrally Within said bowl, an inner tobacco receiving bowl having an opening in its bottom of a diameter slightly larger than the external diameter of said projection, the lower portion of said inner bowl having cylindrical external configuration of a diameter slightly less than the interior diameter of the outer bowl, an outwardly projecting flange at the upper periphery of said inner bowl, 2, frusto-conical shoulder formed on the exterior of said inner bowl between said lower cylindrical portion and said peripheral flange adapted to engage a tapered annular surface provided within the outer bowl adjacent the upper edge thereof when the bowls are nested to maintain the lower cylindrical portion of the inner bowl slightly spaced from the outer bowl and to maintain the opening in the bottom of the inner bowl spaced from said projection, the bottom of said inner bowl being spaced from the bottom of the outer bowl to provide an annular passage therebetween, one of said bowls having an annular groove formed in the side thereof immediately below the frusto-
