BRACELET Filed July 23, 1956 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Nov. 17, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BRACELET e Alfred Philippe, New York, N. Y.
Application July 23, 1936, Serial No. 92,262
Claims.
The invention relates to jewelry and is particularly adapted to the employment of ornamented faces or plates whichmay be employed for different purposes. Thus an ornamented plate may have attached to it a hinged member so that it may be used as a clip. One or a plurality of such clips may be associated with and mounted on a bar carrying a pin so that the ornamented member or members may form a brooch or the ornamented member or members may be mounted on or associated with a bracelet or a part thereof. Thus the same ornamented member may be used interchangeably for various purposes.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a a side elevation of one form of bracelet on which is mounted ornamental members. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the bracelet from which the ornamental members have been removed. Fig. 3 is a rear plan view of one of the ornamental members showing the clip member in place and the means for attachment to the bracelet. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the bracelet of Fig. 1 open for placing on the arm of the wearer, one of the ornamental members being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary plan View of the clasping portion of the bracelet. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary side elevation of another specific form of bracelet. Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the bracelet of Fig. 7. Figs. 9 and 10 are front and top plan views of pin bars which may be associated with the ornamental elements.
Referring specifically to Figs. 1 to 6 of the drawings a bracelet may consist of two members 26 and 2! hinged at 22 and removably joined together at their other ends by a clasp member 23. If desired the members 26 and 2| may be rigid. Although not essential these members where they join may be cut out as illustrated in the drawings leaving tongues 24 and 25 on the members 26 and 2! respectively. The end of the member 26 or its tongue 24 may be turned upward as at 26 and then turned backward as at 21. The portion 21 may overlie the tongue 24 and be substantially parallel thereto. The tongue 2'! may be slotted so that its arms may be resilient and on one side may be formed. a lug or projection 28 for a purpose hereinafter explained. Likewise the end of the member 2| or its tongue 25 may be turned upwardly as at 26 and backwardly as at 36. The portion 36 may be positioned symmetrically with the portion 21 and may likewise be slotted and provided with a lug or projection 3i. The portion 29 corresponds in general to the portion 26 but has projecting arms 32 which are deformed or pinched together slightly so that when the member 29 is pressed to the member 26 the arms 32 will engage the member 26 and spring around it so as to clasp together the tongues 24 and 25. Ornamental members, here illustrated as clips, may be carried by the members 21 and 36 in such a way as to substantially cover the ends of the members 26 and 2| and conceal the portions cut out of their ends if they are cut out. Thus in Fig. 1 an ornamented clip 33 is illustrated in position on the member 21 and an ornamental clip 34 is illustrated in position on the member 36. As indicated in Fig. 3 each clip has on the back of its ornamental member a slot or groove 35 which is adapted to be passed over the member 21 or 36. The resiliency of the member will allow the lug 28 or 3| to be depressed during the entrance and an opening or releasing stop 36 may be provided in one wall of the slot 35 to form a positioning stop for the lug 28 or 3|. As indicated in Fig. 1 the clips are preferably positioned on the bracelet so that their adjacent faces substantially touch.
In Figs. '7 and 8 is shown an alternative bracelet form in which a rigid member 46 of any suitable size is connected to flexible members 4| and 42 which are joined at their other ends by a suitable clasp 43. A bar or plate 44 corresponding to the two members 21 and of Fig. 2 is mounted on the rigid member 46 by means of a pillar or post 45 so that when the clips 34 are mounted on the bar 44 the hinged back clip members 31 will lie between the bar 44 and the rigid plate 40.
In Figs. 9 and 10 is illustrated a bar 46 corresponding to the bar 44 and carrying a pin 4! and a clasp member 48 for the pin. The ornamented clip members 34 may be mounted on the bar 46 in the same way as on the members 21 and 30 and 44. It will be understood that because of the formation of the projection 28 or 3! and of its supporting member the support may be withdrawn from the slot by exerting pressure which will be sufiicient to cause the projection to slide away from or leave its seat and come out of the slot. There is no means provided for locking the bar in the slot and no means is needed. The friction between the members is sufficient to hold it normally in place. The long contact between the bar end of the slot tends to hold the members against twisting or displacement and in proper position without the necessity of other bracing, locking, supporting or positioning members or means.
It will thus be seen that the present invention provides a plurality of separate supporting members which may be used to carry the ornamental clip members so that a single pair of jeweled face plates may be worn either as clips or as a bracelet or as a brooch or the like.
The invention is not confined to the specific embodiment herein illustrated but may take other forms. The invention may be applied to other articles than bracelets.
