UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN PFEIFER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-HODS.
Specilication fomning part of Letters Patent No. 206,127, dated July 16, 1878; application filed May 31, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN PFEIFER, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Goal Hods or Scuttles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the hod embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear view.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in forming the top of a coal-hod with overhangin g sides, which extend from front to rear, so that coal is prevented from falling out during the overturning or carrying of the hod or removal by shoveling.
The rear wall of the souttle is flat or rightlined, whereby a wide space is provided at said locality for the ready filling of the hod, the convenient removal ofthe coal by shoveling, and easy grasp of the bail when lowered rearward.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the hod, and B the bail thereof. The top or upper portions C C of the longitudinal sides of the body are turned inward, so as to overhang the interior of the body, and said sides extend from front to rear of the body.
The upper portion D of the rear wall ofthe body extends in a right line, or flat in a top view, in the transverse direction of the body, and the edge of said portion may be curved, as appears in the rear view, Fig. 3, and it is preferably lower than the edge of the front portion or spout of the hod.
It will be seen that when coal is to be removed, either by overturning the hod or by the use of a shovel, the overhanging sides C prevent lateral spread of the coal, whereby spilling of the coal is prevented, and when the hod is overturned the coal is readily directed to the tire-place.
In the operation of lilling the hod, the shape of the top of the rear provides a large space for the shovel, as Well as approximates the shape of the under side of the same; consequently the shovel may be carried over the rear of the body, and unloaded with the greatest facility.
Again, when the hod is filled, the shovel may be shoved into the coal without interference of the sides of the hod, and the coal may be removed wit-hout liability of knocking the shovel and spilling the coal.
Moreover, when the bail is lowered rearward, a space exists between the same and the top ofthe rear of the body, whereby said bail may be grasped with ease and unobstructed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The coal-hod having overhanging top portions C, extending from front to rear thereof, and a right-lined rear portion, D, whose upper edge is lower than the resting-place of the bail B, substantially as and for the purpose Set forth.
JOHN PFEIFER.
