Description

A. R. NIXON.
Hoe. No. 206,122. Patented July'i6, I878.
Attorneys METERS, FMOw-L THOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D O.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABLE R. NIXON, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,122, dated July 16, 1878; application filed May 15, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABLE R. NIXON, of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson, and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Hoes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a fastening for garden and farm hoes, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which m y invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2- is a vertical section of the same.
A represents a squarehoe-blade, through the center of which is a hole for the passage of the fastening-bolt a. Bis the socket to receive the handle D. This socket is formed with 01' upon a plate, 0, which extends downward to below the center of the hoe-blade, and has a vertical slot, x, through which the bolt to is to pass.
The upper portion of the plate 0 is made wide and turned over to catch on the upper edge of the hoe-blade, as shown at F. When this has been adjusted and the bolt a passed through the slot 00, a nut, d, screwed on the end of the bolt, secures everything in position.
The hook or catch F of the plate 0 strengthens the device, and forms a simple yet firm and durable fastening for the hoe-blade.
The fastening can be reversed so as to use either edge of the blade as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a square hoe-blade, A, having a central bolt-hole, the plate 0, formed at one end with the elongated catch or hook F and at the other end with the slot :0, and having the socket B on its face and the fastening-bolt a, whereby the blade can be changed to bring either of its four edges into use and be held firmly to the handle, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of April, 1878.
ABLE R. NIXON.
