Description
Nov. 17, 1936. J. A. HENDLEY ELASTIC TAPE FOR SLIDE FASTENERS AND THE LIKE Filed Jan. 14, 1935 Patented Nov. 17, 1936 hurrah srrxrss PATENT QFFECE ELASTIC TAPE FOR SLIDE FASTENERS AND THE LIKE Application January 14, 1935, Serial No. 1,671
2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in woven, knitted, braided, or otherwise fabricated,
tapes including weft picks of elastic strands therein, and particularly adapted for the mounting of slide fasteners or the like.
One object of this invention is to provide an improved elastic tape for slide fasteners or the like, which will have elasticity sidewise or transversely of the tape to permit the relief and equalization of excessive strains transversely of the tape.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved tape for slide fasteners or the like, having weft picks of elastic strands which terminate short of the region where the fastener arms grip the tape, thus avoiding risk of severing elastic strands with consequent injury to the tape.
With the above and other. objects in view, this invention includes all improvements over the prior art which are disclosed in this application.
In the accompanying drawing, in which one way of carrying out the invention is shown for illustrative purposes:
Fig. 1 is a iragmental face view of a tape made in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged schematic view similar to Fig. 2.
In the description and claims, the various parts are identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application as the prior art will permit.
The tape l0 illustrated in the accompanying drawing consists of a relatively-thin and flexible body or flap I I, substantially plain along one edge l2 and built up at the opposite edge in any improved manner familiar to those skilled in the art to provide a thickened corded or beaded edge I 3 having, for instance, a longitudinally-extending group of strands l4 incorporated therein.
The tapev l0, illustrated in the drawing, consists of two plys of fabric i5 and i6, respectively having warp threads I! and I8, inelastic weft strands or picks l9 and 20, and elastic weft strands or picks 2| and 22. The strands It in the corded or beaded edge I3 may, for example, consist of strands of twisted yarn. The elastic weft picks 2| and 22 may be made of rubber or rubber latex or the like, and may be bare or each may be covered with yarn or thread in any suitable known way.
The elastic weft picks 2| and 22 ordinarily may be made as onecontinuous weft strand, and in the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, this elastic weft strand, comprising the elastic weft picks 2| and 22,wi11 be so woven as to stop short of the region of the tape which is plamped or gripped between opposed arms 23 and 24 of the slide fasteners 25, thus 5 avoiding the risk of the arms 23 and 24 cutting or' breaking the elastic weft strand, in event of which cutting or breaking there would be tendency for at least some of the elastic picks of the elastic weft strand to be released from their proper 10 anchorage, with consequent disfiguration of the tape and injury to the effective action thereof.
The elastic weft picks of rubber or the like serve to permit transverse stretching of the tape as, for example, at locations such as indicated in dotted 15 lines at 26, to relieve and equalize excessive strains which may at times be brought on localized areas of the tape, such, for example, as may occur in a Jacket when being worn on a person. This relief and equalization of strains thus minimizes the tendency of the slide fasteners to come open or be torn loose from their anchorage on the tape.
The invention may be carried out in other specific ways than that herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential char- 25 acteristics of the invention, and the present embodiment is therefore to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended 30 to be embraced therein.
I claim:
1. A multi-ply woven tape designed and adapted for the mounting of slide fasteners along one edge thereof comprising: two plys extending the 35 full width of the tape, said plys being separated along one edge of the tape and the space created filled with stuffing strands to form a thickened edge, and said plys being closely adjacent one another for the remaining width of the tape and 40 forming a relatively-thin flap-like body, all the weft picks of the ply portions forming said thickened edge consisting of inelastic strands, all the weft picks of the ply portions forming a major portion of the width of said flap-like body and 45 which lie within a given ply consisting of elastic strands, said inelastic strands forming weft binder strands extending back and forth from ply to ply along the width of the flap-like body.
2. In combination: a multi-ply woven tape hav- 50 ing two plys extending the full width of the tape, said plys being separated along one edge of the tape and the space created filled with stufi'ing strands to form a thickened edge, and said plys being closely adjacent one another for the re- 55 maining width of the tape and forming a relaelastic strands forming weft .binder strands extively-thin flap-like body, all theweft picks of tending back and forth from ply to ply along the ply portions forming said thickened edge conthe width of the flap-like body; and slide fassisting of inelastic strands, all the weft picks of teners having opposed arms gripping opposite the ply portions forming a major portion of the sides of said tape at said thickened edge. a width of, said flap-like body and which lie within a given ply consistingof elastic strands, said in- I JAMES A. HENDLEY.
