, This invention relates to a device for applying ferrules.
In the manufacture of flexible conduits it is desirable to apply ferrules to the ends of the conduits. Ferrules are necessary to protect the ends of the conduits and to provide means to retain nuts or other coupling elements on the conduits. Where the conduits are fabricated from a plurality of layers of material the ferrules are necessary to hold the ends of the layers together. Where the conduits are to be used for enclosing wires, as in the radio shielding-of ignition systems, the ferrules are necessary to electrically bond the layers and also to present a smooth opening for the introduction of the wires. Therefore, the broad object of this invention. is to provide a device for quickly and easily applying ferrules to the ends of flexible conduits.
The ferrules are provided with double walls, 29 one wall being adapted to extend over the outer surface of the conduit and the other wall being adapted to extend into the conduit. The ferrule is held in place by, crimping the free edges against the inner and outer walls of the conduit. There- 5 fore, a further object of the invention is to provide a tool to crimp a double-walled ferrule on the end of a conduit.
The ferrules must be firmly seated on the ends of the conduits. Therefore, a further, specific an object of the invention is to provide a die member which will first force a. ferrule onto the end of a conduit and then crimp the ferrule.
A further object of the invention is to provide a die control device so .that consecutive, similar 35 operations of the die-actuating means will cause the die to perform different functions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple manually operated tool with interchangeable parts adapted to operate on conduits 40 of various diameters.
The invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, is illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which reference numerals are used to 50 designate the parts forming the invention, and
letters are used to designate parts forming no part of the invention, and in which:

Referring to the drawings, the machine comprises a substantially U-shaped frame 6, which 10 may be secured to a bench or other supporting means. by boltsdisposedthroughlugs i. Carried. by the right-hand end of the frame 6 is a movable shaft 8 surrounded by a retracting spring 9. An operating lever or handle Iii is pivoted to the frame 15 6 at H and is provided with a cam i2 to operate the shaft 8. On the opposite end of the shaft 8 is carried a head I3 held to the shaft 8 by a pin hi. A set-screw I5 is provided to hold the punch hereinafter described. 2 On the opposite end of the frame 6 is provided an opening IE to permit of the insertion of a .conduit. The conduit is designated generally as A and may be of the usual type of flexible con- 'duitformed of a single strip of metal wound upon itself to provide interlocking flanges. A covering of braided wire B may be applied on the conduit A.
On the end of the conduit A is disposed a. ferrule C having an outer wall D, the rear edge of which is designated as E. The ferrule C is provided with a. relatively shorterinner wall F, the rear edge of which is designated as G. The ferrule C is formed with an annular flange H which may co-operate with a coupling nut to secure the conduit A in any desired manner.
Disposed across the inner end of the opening [6 is a pair of complementary die-carrying blocks l1, l8. The block I1 is stationary, while the block I8 is movable away from the block I1 by means of spring-pressed pins l9. An eccentrically mounted cam 20, provided with a lever 2 I, is used to move the block it! toward the stationary block II. Carried by the blocks ll, l8, are complementary dies 22. It will be understood that the die members 22 are removable so that other dies 22 maybe used for different sizes of conduits A. The dies are provided with plane surfaces 23 to grip the conduit A and with a tapered surface 24 which rrierges into the surface 23 for the purpose of crimping the ferrule as hereinafter described.

taining ring 28 at the rear portion of the member 21 and also by a coil spring 29 which tends to constrict the segments of the member 21. The member 21 is provided with a vertical face 30 adapted to contact the end of the ferrule C. At the forward end of the member 2'! the inner faces thereof are tapered and a crimping bead 3| is formed on the forward portion of the member 21. A pin 32 is disposed through the punch 25 and extends into slots 33 in the die 21 for the purposes hereinafter described.
Surrounding the rear end of the punch'25 and disposed between the head I3 and the die 21 is a ring 34 provided with projecting pins 35 adapted to enter holes 36 in the head i3. The ring 34 is normally urged away from the head i3 by means of pins 31 provided with springs 38 carried by the head i3.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The ferrule C is first applied to the conduit A by hand. The lever 2i is operated to permit the plates l1, l8 to open and the conduit A with the ferrule C is inserted through the opening. The lever 2i is again operated so that the dies 22 firmly grip the conduit A at the proper point. The face 23 of the dies 22 will grip the conduit A but the tapered face 24 will permit relative movement of the ferrule C. The parts are now in' the position shown in Figure 2.
The ring 34 is manually rotated to a point where pins 36 are not in' alignment with the openings 36 and the handle III is then operated on its pivot to force the shaft 8 toward the die 22. The shaft} and the head i3 will move the punch 25 toward the die 22. Simultaneously, the member II will transmit the same motion to the die 21 through the pins 35 and the ring 34. In this way the die 21 and the punch 25 will move together as a unit. The forward end of the die 21 will enter the conduit A and the wall 30 will'abut the ferrule C. As the shaft 8 and the members operated thereby continue to move, the ferrule C will be forced onto the conduit A to a point where the end of the conduit A abuts the end wall of the ferrule C. Just as this point is reached the rear edge E of the outer wall of the ferrule C will be'crimped against' the outside of the conduit A by reason of the tapered face 24 on the die 22. Ordinarily, one thrust of the shaft 8 is sufficient to thoroughly crimp the edge E of the ferrule C. The handle i0 is retracted and the parts return to their normal positions by reason of the spring 9.
The ring 34 is now rotated so that the'pins I! are in alignment with the openings 36 and the handle it! is again operated. The shaft 8 will carry the punch 25 into the conduit A but no axial pressure will be applied to the die 21 by reason of the fact that the pins 35 now ride into the openings 36 in the head 83. Howeven-the friction of the segments of the die 21 against the forward end of the punch 25 caused by the tension of the spring 23 will cause the die 21 to move into the conduit A, until the wall 30 of the die 21 abuts the ferrule C. Further axial movement of the die 21 will be prevented, but the punch 25 will continue to move and by reason of the tapered face 23 will expand the die 21, so that the bead 3i will crimp the rear edge G of the inner wall F of the ferrule C. The pin 32 will move in the slot and when the pin 32 abuts the end of the slot 23 further movement of the punch 25 is not possible. By adjustment of the pin 32 or the length of the slot 33 the pressure to be applied to the inner wall of the ferrule C may be definitely limited.
Upon retraction of the handle ill the spring I means,
will return the parts to their original position and the spring 29 will constrict the segments of the. die 21. The pin 31 will move the ring 34 away from the head i3, so that the ring 34 may be rotated to remove the pins 35 from alignment -with the holes 31. The lever 2| is operated to open the dies 22, the conduit A with the ferrule C securely crimpedthereon'is removed from the machine, and the device is now ready to repeat the cycle of operation.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device for crimping ferrules on the a conduit, said die having a tapered face to crimp a ferrule, a split die to force a. ferrule into 1 the holding die to crimp one wall of the ferrule and a spacer adjacent the split die to limit the action of the split die. v
3. In a device for crimping ferrules on the ends of flexible conduits, a holding die to grip a conduit, a. punch, operating means for the punch, a die carried by the punch and a spacer ring disposed between media and the operating means to selectively cause the die to move and to both move and expand.
4. In a device for crimping ferrules on the ends of flexible conduits, a holding die to grip a conduit, a punch, operating means for the punch, a die carried by the punch and a spacer ring disposed between the die and the operating means to selectively cause the die to move and to both move and expand, said ring being provided with pins adapted to ride into openings in the operating means.
5. In a device for crimping ferrules on the ends of flexible conduits, a holding die to grip a conduit, a' punch, operating means for the punch, a die carried by the punch and a spacer ring disposed between the die and .the operating said ring being provided with pins adapted to selectively bear against the operating means or to ride into openings in the operating means to selectively cause the die to move and to both move and expand.

crimp the outer wall thereof against the conduit.
8. In a device for crimping double walled ferrules on the ends of flexible conduits, a holding die to grip a conduit, amovable punch, operating means for the punch, an expanding die carried by the punch and a ring provided with pins disposed between the expanding die and the operating means to permit the application of axial pressure to the expanding die through the ring to force a ferrule into the holding die to crimp the outer wall thereof against the conduit, said ring and. pins being movable to cause the pins to ride into openings in the operating means to cause the operating means to move the punch without applying pressure to the die.
9. In a device for crimping double walled ferrules on the ends of flexible conduits, a holding die to grip a conduit, a movable punch, operating means for the punch, an expanding die carried by the punch and a ring provided with pins disposed between the expanding die and the operating means to permit the application of axial pressure to the expanding die through the ring to force a ferrule into the holding die to crimp the outer wall thereof against the conduit,
said ring and pins being movable to cause the pins to ride into openings in the operating means to cause the operating means to move the punch without applying pressure to the die and said punch being adapted to expand the expanding die to crimp the inner wall of 'a ferrule against the inner wall of the conduit.
