F. F. JACKSON FURNACE UNIT Nov. 3, 1936.
Filed June 30, 1934 INVENTOR. firank qfac/w g BY 21 m 9, 4 ATTORN 8 Patented Nov. 3, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FURNACE UNIT Frank F. Jackson, Cleveland, Ohio Application June 30, 1934, Serial No. 733,262

The central section generally 50 Other objects of my invention will appear as indicated at H is preferably in the form of a cylthe description proceeds. inder. The inner ends of the terminal sections To the accomplishment of the foregoing and 9 and I0 are provided with reduced cylindrical related ends, said invention, then, consists of extensions l2 having an outside diameter subthe means hereinafter fully described and parstantially equal to the inside diameter of the 5 terminals of the central section I I. A shoulder generally indicated at I3 is provided on the terminal sections for the purpose hereinafter more fully explained.
As most clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 to 4 the terminal portions of the intersection H are provided with a plurality of spaced staggered rows of openings I4 extending therethrough. After the parts have been assembled into the position illustrated in Fig. 1, weld metal, preferably of some heat resistant composition, is deposited in the openings l4, keying the central and terminal sections securely together.
The preferred mode of assembling the central and terminal sections may be as follows: The central section without the openings M in the terminal portions thereof is telescopically engaged with the cylindrical projections l2 of the terminal sections 9 and i8 until the ends of the central section abut the shoulders l3 on the terminal sections. After the parts have been brought into such assembled relation, the openings I4 are drilled in the central section; the points of the drill forming such holes penetrating for a short distance into the cylindrical extensions on the terminal sections. After such drill holes are formed, the same are filled with weld metal in the manner hereinbefore explained, such weld metal filling the shallow openings formed in the terminal sections by the points of the drills, thereby insuring a more positive connection between the several sections of the roll.
A plurality of annular work supporting members generally indicated at l5 are secured in axially spaced relation on the central portion of the roll.
Should a roll fail due to a deterioration of the central section thereof, such roll may be repaired by inserting a new central section by the following procedure:
The central section will be sawed off adjacent the inner ends of the terminal sections; the terminal sections will then be placed in a lathe and the terminal portion with the central section remaining on the terminal sections will be turned down by the usual lathe operation. In order to facilitate the supporting of the terminal sections in the lathe for this turning down operation, such sections are provided with a transversely extending bar or brace generally indicated at l6 which may, at an axis of the section, be provided with an opening or recess to be engaged by the head or tail stock of the lathe.
After the terminal sections have been thus turned down to substantially their original size and shape, a new central section may be assembled therewith and united thereto in the manner heretofore explained.
As previously indicated, the central section is preferably formed from a centrifugal casting. The assembly of a composite roll from a plurality of elements in accordance with the principles of my invention makes possible the use of a centrifugal casting in the center section of the roll which is not possible when the entire roll is made in one piece. Use of a centrifugal casting in the central section is advantageous for the reason that it is possible to maintain closer tolerance in a centrifugal casting than in the common form of casting and furthermore, the structural strength of a thin-walled centrifugal casting of this character is believed to be superior to that of the usual type casting. The possibility of maintaining closer tolerance in a centrifugal casting enables me to form the central section with a uniform wall section which is relatively thin. This is a particular advantage when it is remembered that rolls of this character fail primarily due to their own weight, rather than due to the Weight of the material supported thereon. It is advantageous, therefore, to form the wall of the central section as thin as possible in order to reduce the weight but not too thin in order that weak sections may occur. It is to the solution of this last named problem that a centrifugal casting for the central section is particularly applicable and the use of the centrifugal casting in the central section is made possible only by the assembly of a plurality of elements to form a complete roll.
The telescopic engagement of the parts at the juncture between the central and terminal sections of the roll produces a very strong, highly efficient joint between the parts, one which does not rely upon auxiliary connecting means such as keys and bolts to carry the stress to which the roll is subjected, and a connection which is particularly applicable to the replacement of the central section.
Other forms may be employed embodying the features of my invention instead of the one here explained, change being made in the form or construction, provided the elements stated by the following claim or the equivalent of such stated elements be employed.
I, therefore, particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:-
A conveyor roll for furnaces comprising terminal sections respectively provided at their outer ends with journals by which the roll may be rotatably supported and at their inner ends with substantially cylindrical extensions, a radially and circumferentially extending abutment on each of said terminal sections at the outer ends of said extensions, the face of said abutment lying in a plane normal to the axis of said journals, a central cylindrical section telescopically engaging said extensions and terminally engaging said abutment faces, said central section and extensions provided with a plurality of circumferentially and axially spaced openings extending through the wall of said central section and partially through the wall of said extensions, and weld metal filling said openings and securing together said central and terminal sections.
