4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in lubricant nozzle extensions.
It is common practice for gasoline filling stations and garages to have on hand large drums containing heavy grease for use in filling the differential and transmission housings of automobiles. These drums are usually equipped with pumps for forcibly transferring grease through a hose connection into the housing to be lubricated, and the housing is equipped with a discharge nozzle for insertion in the filling opening. These nozzles, as commonly manufactured, have short, stubby discharge ends and must, therefore, be held in position in the filling opening by one attendant while another operates the pump. In addition, the standard nozzle end fits very loosely in the filling opening so that grease frequently oozes out onto the hand of the attendant.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to obviate the above mentioned objectionable features of present practices by providing an extension device which can be quickly attached to a standard form of nozzle, said extension being so formed that it will maintain itself in operative position, thereby eliminating the necessity of using two attendants for the filling operation.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide an extension as above described which is of curved hook-like form.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of the class described, means forming an effective, readily releasable sealing connection between the extension and the standard nozzle to thereby prevent leakage of grease during use, while permitting easy removability of the extension if it is desired to use the nozzle in its original form.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide, in a device as above described, a coupling member having a bayonet slot therein for cooperation with the lug on the end of the standard nozzle, and additional means cooperable with said coupling for clamping the coupling in engaging position and for effecting a grease-proof seal.
A further object of the invention is to provide a nozzle extension having a hook-like end wherein said end may be readily swiveled to a desired position with respect to the nozzle end, and subsequently clamped in a desired swiveled position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lubricant nozzle extension which is simple and inexpensive in construction, strong and durable, and well adapted to the purpose described.
With the above and other objects in view, the

invention consists of the improved lubricant nozzle extension and all its parts and combinations, as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrating one complete embodiment of the preferred form of invention, in which the same reference numerals designate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a differential housing showing the improved nozzle extension in operative position with respect to the differential filling opening, and showing in perspec tive, the pump equipped drum for transferring grease to the nozzle and differential;
Fig. 2 is a side View of a standard nozzle and the improved extension separated from one another;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view of the coupling, parts being shown in vertical section;
Fig. 4 is a side view of the inner end of the extension showing the various coupling parts separated from one another, parts being broken away and shown in vertical section; and
Fig. 5 is an inner end view of the main coupling member alone.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 8 designates a standard form of grease dispensing drum provided with pump mechanism 9 operable by a crank ill to force lubricant from the drum through a hose connection H to a standard form of nozzle [2.
The nozzle I2 is of a type commonly used for this type of work and will hereinafter be referred to as a standard nozzle. This nozzle has a main tubular body portion l3 and an angular tubular extension M to which the hose H is suitably connected. A plunger l5 is slidable within the main body portion l3, and has one end adapted to serve as a valve to normally prevent discharge of grease from the nozzle. The other end of the plunger I5 is equipped with a ring l6, which, when the plunger is in closing position, fits within a slot IT in the end of the body. To open the valve the ring I6 is pulled outwardly to clear the end of the body l3, and is then turned at an angle so that it cannot enter the slot. This will hold the valve in open position. Suitable yielding means is employed within the nozzle for normally urging the plunger into closing position. At the discharge end of the nozzle the main body i3 is formed with an exterior lug l8.
The improved coupling extension comprises a tube or pipe 19 having its outer end of curved hook-like form as at 20. The inner end of the 55 pipe I9 is provided with an outwardly flared flange 2|. The main coupling member 22 is tubular and formed exteriorly on one end with threading 23. At the other end of the coupling member is an L- shaped or bayonet slot 24. A nut member 25 has one end apertured as at 26 to slidably receive the pipe l9, and has its other end interiorly threaded as at 2! for cooperation with the threading 23 of the coupling member 22. Surrounding the extension pipe l9 within the nut 25 is a metallic collar 28 having its bore outwardly flaring at one end as at 29 for cooperation with the flared end 2! of the pipe I9. One or more leather or fibrous washers 30 may also be employed in the coupling to effect a perfect sealing.
To secure the improved extension device onto a standard nozzle, the parts are held in the relationship shown in Fig. 2 and nut 25 is loosened. This permits insertion of the nozzle end into the coupling member 22 and engagement of the lug I 8 with the bayonet slot. When the lug is properly positioned in said slot, the nut 25 is tightened. This causes the metallic ring or collar 28 to be wedged against the flared end of the pipe 2| and causes said end of the pipe to be drawn tightly against the leather washer 30. It also causes said washer to seat tightly against the end of the standard nozzle to form a grease-proof seal. At the same time due to the tightening of the nut 25, the edge 3| of the bayonet slot is forced into tight engagement with the lug l8 so that after the nut is thoroughly tightened, it is almost impossible to remove the nozzle without first loosening the nut. Thus the coupling arrangement serves not only to effect a grease-proof seal, but also to lock the parts in assembled relationship. In addition, the improved coupling makes it possible for the hook-like end 20 to be swiveled to a desired position with respect to the nozzle just before the nut 25 is finally tightened, and when this latter step is taken, the pipe is effectively clamped in the desired position of adjustment.
By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that when the extension is applied to the nozzle, it may be readily hooked into the filling opening 32 of the differential 33, or other housing to be lubricated, and the hook will serve to maintain the extension in position. Thus it is unnecessary to have one attendant to hold the nozzle while another attendant operates the pump. In addition, due to the curved form of the extension, no grease will ooze out of the filling opening until the housing has been filled to a desired level.
For certain types of work, it may be desirable to use the standard nozzle without the extension, and the present invention makes it possible to quickly disconnect the extension at any time desired; thus great flexibility of use is afforded.
While only one form of standard nozzle I 2 is here shown, it is obvious that the invention is applicable for use in connection with nozzles of other forms, and if these nozzles are not provided with a lug I8, one can easily be welded on or otherwise secured thereon to render the nozzle adaptable for use with the improved extension.
Various changes and modifications may be made in the improved nozzle extension, and all of such changes are contemplated as may come within the scope of the claims.
What I claim is:
1. An extension device for use with a lubricant nozzle having a short, rigid barrel, said barrel having a discharge end provided with an exterior lug, comprising a rigid extension tube, a tubular coupling member having one end formed with a bayonet slot for detachable engagement with the lug on the discharge end of said nozzle, and means carried by the inner end of the extension tube engageable with the coupling member to clamp the inner end of the extension tube against the discharge end of the nozzle and to clamp the coupling member in engaged position with the lug, the outer end of the extension tube being freely insertable in a lubricant receiving aperture and being hook shaped to support the nozzle in suspended position.
2. An extension device for use with a lubricant nozzle having a short, rigid barrel, said barrel having a discharge end provided with an exterior lug, comprising a rigid extension tube having an outwardly flared inner end, a tubular coupling member having one end formed with a slot for detachable engagement with the lug on the discharge end of said nozzle, a nut loosely surrounding the flared inner end of the extension tube, and a collar within said nut and having a flared bore, said nut being threadedly engageable with the coupling member and turnable to cause wedging action between the collar and flared inner end of the extension tube to clamp said end against the discharge end of the nozzle and to clamp the coupling member in engaged position with the lug, the outer end of the extension tube being freely insertable in a lubricant receiving aperture and being hook shaped to support the nozzle in suspended position.
3. In combination, a standard grease discharge nozzle having a short, rigid, tubular barrel provided with a discharge end shaped to direct grease into a filling opening and having a valve controlling plunger operable within the tubular body to control the discharge of grease, a rigid tubular extension having a hook-like outer end freely insertable in a lubricant receiving aperture to support the nozzle in suspended position, and means for readily detachably connecting the inner end of said extension to the discharge end of said standard nozzle to provide for selective use of the standard nozzle either with or without said extension.
4. In combination, a standard grease discharge nozzle having a short, rigid, tubular body provided with a discharge end formed with an exterior lug and having a valve controlling plunger operable within said tubular body to control the discharge of grease, a rigid tubular extension having a hook-like outer end freely insertable in a lubricant receiving aperture to support the nozzle in suspended position, and means including a coupling member having a slot engageable with said lug for readily detachably connecting the inner end of said extension tube to the discharge end of said standard nozzle to provide for selective use of the standard nozzle either with or without said extension.
