1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in wash boilers, and has for its object to provide an appliance adapted to be mounted and used in a Wash boiler of ordinary construction, said appliance consisting of a pair of relatively shallow and bottomless steam chests, one or more vertical steam pipes mounted on said chests, and a horizontal perforated discharge pipe fed by said vertical pipe or pipes; all arranged to generate steam and force the same, commingled with water at a high temperature, upon the substance being Washed.
The steam-chests are preferably conoidal in form to permit ready Withdrawal from the boiler when the latter is charged with yielding material (such as fabrics) being washed. The appliance is also adapted to be used as a dasher for clotheswashing, the steam-chests serving as heads for that purpose and the discharge pipe serving as a handle. The invention also provides means for locking the appliance in place within the boiler to prevent it being unseated from contact with the bottom of the boiler by steam pressure generated within the steam-chests. v
The apparatus of this invention is adapted to the washing of fabrics, dishes or other materials.
Many other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being made to the annexed drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical mid-section of a device embodying the invention in place within a boiler.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the device of the invention.
Fig. 3 is -a diagrammatic view illustrating the mode of operation of the apparatus of the invention, and the relative location of the heating element employed, said view being taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The wash boiler A is of the usual and well known dimensions, having the fiat bottom li, and the inturned flange 5 about its mouth. Within the boiler A the apparatus of this invention is to be mounted, and it comprises a pair of steamchests B made in the form of truncated cones and being provided with marginal perforations 6. At the top of each of the steam-chests B is a tubular standard 'l and upon the upper terminals of said standards 'l are mounted the horizontal dischar-ge 8 provided at its ends with the closures 9, and having throughout its lower half the lines of staggered perforations lll.
The discharge pipe 8 is provided with a ring I I on which the spring-locking arm l2 having the upturned terminals I3 is rotatably mounted by means of a pin lli for rotation about a vertical axis; the function of the arm I2 being to lock the apparatus in place within the boiler A by engagement with the inner faces of the sides of said boiler A above the water level l5, as shown in Fig. 3.
The parts being assembled as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, heat is applied to the bottom 4 of the boiler 5 by means of the heating element I 6 indicated in Fig. 3.
The material to be cleaned is deposited within the boiler A in such manner that its Lipper surface will not be materially above the plane indicated by the dotted line I5 in Fig. 3. Water being placed in the boiler A to an extent which will barely cover the material to be washed, heat is applied to the bottom 4 of the boiler A with the result, When the necessary temperature is reached, of converting the water contained in the steam-chests B into steam, which is discharged through the perforations Ill with considerable pressure, thus exhausting the steam chests B l which are relled through the perforatio-ns The renewed water contained in the steam-chest B is quickly converted to steam, this steam is discharged through the perforations I, and the cycle of operations thus described is repeated indefinitely until the material is sufiiciently washed, when it is removed from the boiler A for rinsing purposes.
The described apparatus may also be used as a dasher for washing fabrics, being manually reciprocated, the operator using the discharge pipe 8 as a handle; the chests B serve as heads to force water through the mass of fabric.
This application is a re-ling of application Serial No. 695,881, filed February 29, 1924.
Various modifications of structure may be made Without departing from the invention as defined in the following claim, illustrations and the foregoing description merely illustrating the preferred form of the invention, and not being intended as limiting that invention.
What is claimed is:
An attachment for a wash boiler receptacle that has an inwardly extended iiange at its upper end comprising a pair of bottomless hollow steam chests adapted to be mounted on the bottom of said receptacle, a horizontal perforated discharge pipe, vertical pipes connecting said steam chests and said discharge pipe and supporting said discharge pipe near the upper end of said receptacle, a ring mounted on said discharge pipe, and a resilient locking arm mounted for rotation about a vertical axis on said ring for engaging said flange to hold said appliance in place within said receptacle.
