l leaving the bed.
An additional object is to provide in a bed of the character indicated, compressible mattress sections and means operable from each side of the bed for drawing said sections from under the 1:5 patient to expose an opening below which is ldisposed a` commode.
A further object is to provide improved cushion Vmeans for the mattress and to provide an improved sheet for use with the mattress, having r20 ,the sections adapted to` be withdrawn from beneath the patient.
Yet another object is to provide a mattress vhaving an `improved pivoted head section and means whereby the patient may readily adjust o' the head section to a comfortable angle and secure it there.
A further object is to provide in combination with a bed, a table or tray, carried by a bracket adjustable longitudinally of the bed on the side n0 rail thereof, and also including a table top adjustable on the tray and which, when the tray is turned to extend transversely of the bed, may be adjusted to extend across the bed for use as an eating table or the like by the patient, the tray itself being vertically adjustable and including a draw and a shelf or receptacle.
With the fo-regoing and other objects in view, aswill become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel fea- 40 tures of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described.
While the drawings and following description disclose a specic embodiment of the invention,
the disclosure is for the purpose of illustration 45 only and reference must therefore be had to the annexed claims for a statement of the invention.
Fig. l is a plan view of my improved bed including the features hereinbefore mentioned.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View on the line `2--2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a detail section view showing one of 55 the crushable or compressible mattress sections ACJI and the Vmeans for supporting and manipulating the same;
Fig; 5 is a` detail sectional view showing the sections withdrawn or in their position to expose the opening below which the commode is placed; and
Fig. 6 is a plan view showing the improved sheet designed for use with my improved bed.
Owing to the use to which this invention is to be put, it is one of my objects to so construct the l0 bed as to be comfortable and sanitary. To this end all parts are, wherever possible, coated with white enamel, whereby they may be easily maintained in a clean and sanitary condition.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the bed includes a foot and head I0 and II respectively and arranged between these is a bed bottomIZ for supporting the spring, mattress and the like. Side rails I3 connect the foot and head and may be assisted by the bottom in providing a rigid frame. Supported on the bottom I2 is a bed spring I4, whose center is omitted to permit of the insertio-n of an oval shaped spout l5 carried by a sheet IIS of thin pliable aluminum fastened to the upper middle portion of the spring.
The central portion of a mattress II above the spout l5 is cut away and replaced by a pair of feather stuffed inserts I8. The inserts I8 are continuous with the outer side portions of the mattress adjacent thereto as best seen in Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings. The inserts I8 may where desired be formed by making an H shaped vertical cut in an ordinary complete mattress, as for example along the solid lines bordering said inserts I8 and seen on Figure l. When 35 constructed in this manner, it is of course necessary to finish the three free side edges of each of the inserts I8 as well as the two free edges oi the mattress proper with suitable panel material. Again in Figure 5 the outer sides of said inserts I8 40 are continuous with the outer side portions of the mattress which have not yet been cut away.
Since the mattress is filled with hair, felt or the like, the inserts are relatively compressible. At their inner lower edges, the inserts I8 are sewed 45 or otherwise suitably secured to movable sheets or plates I9 of aluminum of a gauge tobe readily pliable or yieldable and not prevent functioning of the spring.
As clearly shown in Fig. 3 the inner ends of 50 plates I9 overlap just above the spout I5 whereby to give adequate support to the mattress at this point. The inserts fit snug with the edges of the mattress about the opening containing the inserts and the overlapping of the inner edges of plates I9 bring the inner edges of the plates into close relation, whereby there is no uncomfortable break in the surface of the mattress.
A commode 2l) is disposed beneath the bed and includes a receptable 2l and a top 22 provided with a neck portion 23 to embrace the lower portion of spout I5. During transportation of the commode, a cover may be applied to the neck 23. When positioned as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the
commode is disposed in a jar 24 on brackets' 25' therein, the said jar being preferably partially filled with cold water. A strap 26 is disposed under the jar 24 and connected to each of the bed side rails I3 whereby to hold the jar and commode proper in the positions shown.
At their side edges the plates I9 have secured to them pull straps 21 and these edges are also received under hooks Z8 formed by turning up the outer edges of sheet I6. The hooks 28 maintain the plates in their normal position as best shown in Fig. 3 and when the patient desires to use the commode, the plates are unhooked and the straps 21 pulled in opposite directions to draw the sections I8 into the inoperative positions shown on an enlarged scale in Fig. 5.
To properly cover the mattress there is provided a sheet shown detached in Fig. 6. In the other views, this sheet is shown on the bed and comprises a body portion 29 having its central portion cut away as in the case of the mattress. The four edges of this opening in the sheet each carry a ap and the flaps 39 and 3| are to be disposed over the edges of the opening in the mattress where the sections are not connected with the mattress. Flaps 32 and 33 each carry tie strings 34 and are adapted to be disposed over the inserts with the tie strings disposed between the inserts or sections and the plates I6.
Means are also provided whereby the patient may adjust the head section 35 of the mattress to suit his convenience. To this end the said head section is secured to a thin, preferably perforated sheet of aluminum 36 hingedly secured at 31 to the edge of the sheet I6. The head posts of the bed carry brackets 38, the outer portions of which are shaped to rotatably receive the end portions of a roller 39 over which is disposed a strap or tape 4U secured at its lower end as at 4I to the edge of the aluminum sheet 36 and having its free end disposed to be grasped by the patient to raise the head section to the desired angle.
Also supported by the brackets 38 is a rod 42 l carrying intermediate its ends a hook 43 adapted self, since the hook 43 may be placed in any selected hole 44 for the purpose of securing the head section of the mattress in a comfortable position.
Slidably disposed on one side rail I3 is a bracket 45 carrying at its outer end an internally threaded cylindrical portion 46 in which is adjustably disposed a threaded rod 41 on the upper end of which is secured a tray 48. This tray is provided With a pair of pockets one of which may accommodate a drawer 49, while a receptacle or cuspidor 50 may be disposed in the other.
Owing to the threaded connection between the rod 4l and the portion 46, the tray may obviously be turned into diierent positions relative to the bed. Advantage is taken of this in that a table top 5I is provided adapted to embrace the edges of the tray as best shown in Fig. 3 and slidable on the tray as suggested by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. In the full line position of Fig. 1, the table top 5I projects beyond each end of the tray. I-Iowever in the dotted line the bracket 45 has been moved toward the foot or bottom of the bed and the tray turned to present an edge to the side of the bed and the table top slid on the tray so as to project over the bed. This is advantageous since with the table top in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the bracket may be slid along the bed rail to position the table in front of the patient.
Owing to the use of the subject matter of this invention, sanitation is important. Therefore a sanitary structure has been provided and attention is directed to the fact that the necessary parts between the spring and mattress are of metal, preferably thin pliable aluminum. Also, other parts such as the tray and table top, brackets 38, roller 39 and rod 42 are all white enamelled.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. In a bed, in combination, a spring having an opening therein, a mattress having a pair of sections normally disposed over said opening, a metallic sheet disposed on the spring below the mattress and having a spout extending through said opening, said sheet having its edges upturned to provide hooks, plates disposed on said sheet and secured to an-d supporting said sections over the opening in the spring, said plates normally held in position by said hooks, and means secured to said plates for drawing the same outwardly at opposite sides of the bed to displace the sections and expose the opening.
2. In a bed, the combination of a spring having a central opening therethrough, a mattress on said spring, said mattress having a pair of movable sections normally disposed to ll said opening, a pair of plates connected adjacent their inner edges one to the inner edge of each of said sections and positioned one under each of said sections, said plates adapted to overlap at their inner adjacent edges over the opening to support the sections in opening filling positions, and pull straps connected with the outer ends of the said plates to permit them to be drawn apart in opposite directions to move the plates and compress the sections carried thereby to expose the opening in the spring.
3. In combination, a mattress having an opening and a pair of compressible insert sections adapted to ill said opening, said sections secured to the mattress at their respective opposite edges, a sheet for said mattress, said sheet including a pair of oppositely positioned flaps adapted to fold on lines extending cross-wise of the sheet and thus be disposed inward toward each other to cover opposite walls of the opening in the mattress, and a second pair of flaps adapted to fold at a right angle to the before mentioned ilaps and on lines extending longitudinally of the sheet and be disposed over the adjacent edges of the sections to cover said sections and to be movable therewith.
