This invention relates to new. and useful improvements in railway track grinders and particularly to means for balancing or clamping the grinders with respect to the track rail in a position relative tothe surface thereof to be ground.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device for supporting or clamping a track grinding machine with respect to the track rail and relative to the surface thereof to be ground.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a device of the general character set forth having novel mechanisms for operating the clamping device to engage the track rail as well as to readily and easily release the same therefrom.

Referring now more particularly to'the drawings, reference numerals I, I designate longitudinal side frame members of a track grinder which are respectively connected together at their ends by means of upper and lower transverse plates 2 and 3 respectively. Another transverse member 4 is disposed above the upper plate 2 and isfprovided with depending portions or lugs 5 at its ends which rest upon the upper surface of said member 2 so that the intermediate portion 4a of said-member 4 is relatively spaced therefrom In the present instance tubular bearings 6 are permanently mounted in the transverse members 2 and 3 adjacent the ends thereof, said A rod or shaft l is slidably and rotatably mounted in each of the tubular bearings 6, and the upper portions of these shafts are provided with axially extending longitudinal gear teeth 8. The upper ends of the rods or shafts I are rotatably journalled in a cross head 9 and secured therein by means of nuts l threaded onto the upper ends of said shafts, a shoulder l2 being provided adjacent the upper .end portion of the shafts or rods 1, upon which said cross head .9 is supported. A rack 13 having teeth 13a. is mounted upon the upper face of the transverse member 4 and disposed vertically with respect thereto by means of a bracket I4, the said rack I3 loosely residing :in a recess or guide groove l formed in the cross head 9 to permit relative movement of the latter with respect to the rack 13.
A tubular bearing or sleeve l6 having a flange I6a at its outer end is mounted at the front of the cross head 9 at the left hand end thereof; with respect to Fig. 2, and a circular disk I! having ratchet teeth 18 is secured to the outer face of the flange Ital, the purpose for which will be set forth hereinafter. A shaft 19 is rotatably. journalled in the bearing I6 and a pinion 20 is mounted on the inner end of said shaft H) for rotation therewith, said pinion 20 being of such diameter so that the teeth 21 thereof mesh with the teeth l3a of the rack I3. In the present instance a lever 22 having a handle 23 is keyed to the shaft l9 outwardly of the disk l8 and is secured against displacement longitudinally of said shaft by means of a collar 24. The lever 22 is provided with a pawl (not shown) actuated in the customary manner and arranged to engage the ratchet teeth I8 of the disk I! and controllable by means of a handle 26 pivotally connected to said lever 22 at the base of its handle portion 23. While the pawl just referred to is not shown on the drawings, it is essentially similar to another one appearing in Figure 5 and described hereinafter.
From the foregoing construction it will be readily seen that by actuating the handles 23 and 26 toward each other, the pawl will be released from engagement with the ratchet teeth 18 of V the disk 11 to permit rotation of the lever 22 and shaft IS in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction with respect to Fig. 1, thus rotating the gear or pinion '20 and causing the same to traverse the rack I3 to respectively raise or lower the cross head 9 and the shafts or rods 1 associated therewith with respect to the rack 13 and the upper and lower transverse plates 2 and 3.
Each of the shafts or rods 7 is provided at its lower end with an eccentrically disposed element 2'1, from the under side of which projects an eccentrically disposed stud 28, the end portion of which is threaded. A cam or roller element 29 is rotatably mounted upon the depending stud 28 by means of roller bearings 39 retained in position by a washer 3|, the cam or roller member 29 being secured upon the stud 28 by means of a nut 32. With reference to Fig. 4 it will be noticed that the lower circumferential portion of the cam or roller member 29, projects outwardly to provide a peripheral shoulder or lip 33, the purpose for which will be set forth hereinafter.
For the purpose of rotating the shafts or rods 1 to engage the aforementioned lip or shoulder 33 of each cam roller 29 with the under side of the head 34 of a track rail 36, a rack 31 is mounted in the space between the upper transverse member 2 and the intermediate portion 4a of the transverse member 4, the said rack 31 having parallel spaced slots 38 formed therein longitudinally with respect to the axis of the machine. The slots 38 constitute runways for a pair of lugs 39 which are secured between the members 2 and 4 by means of bolts 49, the said lugs 39 functioning to guide the movement of the rack 37 longitudinally of the grinding machine as well as to limit its extent of travel.
The rack 31 is provided at each side thereof with teeth 31a constructed and arranged to mesh with the axially disposed teeth 8 of the shafts or rods I. The rack 3'! is also provided at its central portion with a parallel series of elongated recesses 31b which are arranged for engagement by the teeth 4| of a gear or pinion 42 secured upon the inner end of a shaft 43 journalled in a tubular bearing or sleeve 44 mounted at the front of the transverse member 4 at the right-hand end thereof with respect to Fig. 2.
The outer end of the tubular bearing or sleeve 44 is provided with a radial flange 45 to which is secured a disk 46 having a series of ratchet teeth 41 formed in the upper part of the circumference thereof. A lever 48 having a handle 49 is keyed to the shaft 43 outwardly of the disk 46 and is secured against displacement longitudinal 1y of said shaft 43 by means of a collar 59. The lever 48 is provided with a pawl actuated in the customary manner by means of a spring am, said pawl being arranged to engage the teeth 41 of the disk 46 and is controlled by means of a handle 52 pivotally connected to said lever 48 at the base of its handle portion 49.
From the foregoing construction it will be readily seen that by actuating the handles 49 and 52 toward each other, the pawl 5i will be released from engagement with the teeth 41 of the disk 46 to permit rotation of the lever 48 and shaft 43 in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction, thus rotating the gear or pinion 42 to actuate the rack 31 longitudinally of the grinding ma chine by engaging the teeth 31b thereof. Movement of the rack 31 in a direction longitudinal of the machine functions to rotate the shafts or rods 1, the teeth 8 of which are meshed with the teeth 31a of said rack 31.
As is customary the grinding machine is supported upon the surface of the track rail 36 by means of a traction wheel 53 mounted upon a shaft 54 supported in arms 55 which are secured to and depend from the longitudinal side frame members I, l of the machine.
In operation of the device, and with the traction wheels 53 resting upon the rail 38, the rack 31 is actuated through rotation of the pinion 52 by means of the lever 48 as previously described thus rotating the shafts I so that the eccentrical- 1y mounted roller cams 29 at the lower ends thereof project outwardly in opposite directions away from the track rail in the relationship shown in Fig. 3, so that when said shafts l are lowered with respect to the machine by rotation of the pinion 20 to traverse the rack [3, the said eccentric portions may be lowered into a position below the head 34 of the track rail 36 with suflicient clearance therefrom.
When the peripheral projections or lips 33 of the cam roller members 29 have been lowered to a point below the lower side edges of the head 34 of the track rail, the rack 31 is actuated in the opposite direction from that previously described to rotate the shafts 1 until said cam roller members 29 engage the sides of the rail head 34 and the peripheral shoulders or lips 33 thereof engage the under surface of said head. The eccentric elements at the lower ends of the shafts I are locked in the last mentioned position engaging the underside of the said head by permitting the pawl 5! to engage the ratchet tooth 4'! of the disk 46 residing directly below the particular position of the lever 48, thus preventing further relative rotation of the shafts I. The pinion 29 is then rotated to traverse the rack 83 in such a direction relative with respect thereto so as to elevate the shafts with respect to the grinding machine until the lips 33 of the cam roller elements 29 impinge upon the under surface of the under rail head 34, thus in effect firmly clamping the grinding machine to the rail head between the machine proper as evidenced by the traction wheel 53 and the eccentric roller cam members 29 at the lower ends of the shafts I.
By rotatably mounting the cam or roller members 29 upon the eccentric studs 28 in the manner previously described, it is possible to move the grinding machine longitudinally along the track rail from one grinding position to another, without the necessity of continually releasing and reengaging the eccentric elements with the head 34 of the track rail for each change of position. As the grinding machine is moved longitudinally of the track rail 36 the clamping effect of the cam rollers 29 is not destroyed but the same merely ride or roll along the sides of the rail head 34 without the shoulder or lip 33 thereof becoming disengaged from the under sides of said rail head.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been set forth for the purpose of description it is not intended that the invention be precisely limited thereto, but that any changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention where within the scope of the annexed claims.
What I claim is:
1. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts, means for raising and lowering said shafts with respect to the machine and track rail, means eccentrically mounted at the lower ends of said shafts, and means for rotating the shafts whereby said eccentrically mounted members may be positioned to engage the undersides of the rail head.
2. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts. means for raising and lowering said shafts with respect to the machine and track rail, means eccentrically mounted at the lower ends of said shafts, means for rotating the shafts whereby said eccentrically mounted members may be positioned to engage the undersides of the rail head, and means for locking said shafts in their rotated position.
3. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts, means for raising and lowering said shafts with respect to the track rail, means for locking the shafts in any desired position relative to said rail, means eccentrically mounted at the lower ends of said shafts, and means for rotating said shafts whereby said eccentrically mounted means may be positioned to engage the undersides of the rail head.
4. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts, means eccentrically mounted at the lower ends of said shafts, and means for rotating said shafts whereby said eccentrically mounted means may be positioned to engage the undersides of the rail head.
5. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts, means eccentrically mounted at the lower ends of said shafts,
means for rotating said shafts whereby said ec-u centrically mounted means may be positioned to engage the undersides of the rail head, and means for locking said shafts in their rotated position.
6. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts having axially extending teeth formed longitudinally thereon, a cross head connecting the upper ends of said shafts, a rack, a pinion mounted on said cross head and meshed with said rack, means for rotating the pinion to traverse the rack, and raise or lower the shafts with respect to the track rail, means eccentrically mounted at the bottom ends of said shafts, a second rack having teeth arranged to mesh with the axially disposed teeth of the shafts, and means for actuating said second rack to rotate the shafts whereby the eccentrically mounted means at the lower ends thereof may be positioned to engage the undersides of the rail head.
7. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts having axially extending teeth formed thereon, means eccentrically mounted at the bottom ends of said shafts, a rack meshed with the axial teeth of the shafts, and means for actuating said rack to rotate said shafts whereby the eccentrically mounted means at the lower ends thereof may be positioned to engage the undersides of the rail head.
8. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts, a rack, means mounted on said cross head and operable to traverse said rack, and raise or lower the shafts with respect to the track rail, means eccentrically mounted at the bottom ends of said shafts, and means for rotating the shafts whereby said eccentrically mounted means may be positioned to engage the undersides of the rail head.
9. A device for clamping and supporting mo-' bile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts, a cross head connecting the upper ends of said shafts, a rack, means mounted on said cross head and operable to traverse said rack, and raise or lower the shafts with respect to the track rail, means eccentrically mounted at the bottom ends of said shafts, means for rotating the shafts whereby said eccentrically mounted means may be positioned to engage the undersides of the rail head, and means for maintaining said shafts in their rotated position.
10. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts, rollers having a projecting circumferential lip at the bottom edge thereof eccentrically mounted at the lower ends of said shafts, and means for rotating said shafts whereby said rollers and lips may be moved into engagement respectively with the sides and underside surfaces of the rail head.
11. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts, members having a projecting circumferential lip at the bottom edge thereof eccentrically mounted at the lower ends of said shafts, and means for rotating said shafts whereby said members and lips may be moved into engagement respectively with the sides and underside surfaces of the rail head, said members being rotatably mounted to permit the unit to be moved along the track without disengaging said members from the rail head.
12. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts having axially extending teeth formed longitudinally thereon, a cross head connecting the upper ends of said shafts, a rack, a pinion mounted on said cross head and meshed with said rack, means for rotating the pinion to traverse the rack, and raise or lower the shafts with respect to the track rail, rollers having a projecting circumferential lip at the bottom edge thereof eccentrically mounted at the lower ends of said shafts, and means for rotating said shafts whereby said rollers and lips may be moved into engagement respectively with the sides and underside surfaces of the rail head.
13. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts having axially extending teeth formed thereon, rollers having a projecting circumferential lip at the bottom edge thereof eccentrically mounted at the lower ends of said shafts, a rack meshed with the axial teeth of the shafts, and means for actuating said rack to rotate said shafts, whereby said rollers and lips may be moved into engagement respectively with the sides and underside surfaces of the rail head.
14. A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts having axially extending teeth formed longitudinally thereon, a cross head connecting the upper ends of said shafts, a rack, a pinion mounted on said cross head and meshed with said rack, means for rotating the pinion to traverse the rack, and raise or lower the shafts with respect to the track rail, members having a projecting circumferential lip at the bottom edge thereof eccentrically mounted at the lower ends of said shafts, and means for rotating said shafts whereby said members and lips may be moved into engagement respectively with the sides and underside surfaces of the rail head, said members being rotatably mounted to permit the unit to be moved along the track without disengaging said members from the rail head.

A device for clamping and supporting mobile units upon railway track rails, including a pair of vertically disposed shafts having axially extending teeth formed thereon, members having a projecting circumferential lip at the bottom edge thereof eccentrically mounted at the lower ends of said shafts, a rack meshed with the axial teeth of the shafts, and means for actuating said rack to rotate said shafts, whereby said members and lips may be moved into engagement respectively with the sides and. underside surfaces of the rail head, said members being rotatably mounted to permit the unit to be moved along the track without disengaging said members from the rail head.

In a machine adapted to be supported on the track means of a railway, mechanism for clamping the machine to the rail means including clamping devices positioned to engage opposite sides of the rail means whereby to clamp the rail means therebetween, one of said devices including a gen-v erally upright shaft, a clamping element carried at the lower end of said shaft and movable intoand out of engagement with the rail means under the head thereof upon rotation of said shaft, and means for rotating the shaft.

In a machine adapted to be supported on the track means of a railway, mechanism for clamping the machine to the rail means including clamping devices positioned to engage opposite sides of the rail means whereby to clamp the rail means therebetween, each of said devices including a generally upright shaft, a clamping element carried at the lower end of said shaft and movable into and out of engagement with the rail means under the head thereof upon rotation of said shaft, and means for rotating the shaft.
