Abstract
202,356. Leon, K. O. April 11, 1922. Rollers and the like, treating.-Rollers are ground to barrel shape by supporting them on edge on a rotary grinding wheel b and oscillating them from side, to side, in apertures in a cage p by the rotary or oscillatory movement of a driving-member 12, which rests on the rollers. The grinding-wheel spindle d is supported in, and adjustable vertically by brackets f, g, which are slidable on the machine frame a by a screw h, and the spindle is driven by a pulley n, through which it can slide, carried in a fixed bracket c. The cage p is carried by a spider frame q secured to a hollow stem r mounted in a bracket s, which is adjustable vertically on the frame a. Inside the stem r is a spindle u having at its lower end an enlarged part V to which are secured an eccentric pin W and a spur-wheel x driven by a pinion y. On the. pin W is an adjustable eccentric sleeve 10 carrying the driving- member 12. By rotation of the sleeve on the pin, the eccentricity of the member 12 with respect to the spindle u may be varied, and when cylindrical rollers are to be produced, reduced to zero; the sleeve and the member 12 are locked in adjusted position by a nut 15. The spur-wheel x and the member 12 may be raised, against the pressure of a spring 16, by a cylindrical rack 17 secured to the spindle u and lifted by means of a pinion 18 and a rack 20 operated by a handwheel 21. The cage p has therein concentric with the spindle u, a number of tapered slots 24, Fig. 4, in which the rollers are placed; plates 25 are fitted to the slots to allow the tilting of the rollers. The edge of the ring 12 is thickened to form a casing for a removable annular block 27, Fig. 4, which has a convex under face contacting with the rollers; spring tongues 29 at the sides of the block ensure that with the return movement of the member 12 the rollers will resume the upright position. In order to increase the grinding pressure, the spindle u may be pressed down by operation of a lever 35. In a modification, the driving-member is prevented from rotating by a pin thereon which engages a slot in the spider frame, and the driving-member is oscillated by means of the eccentric sleeve, which is rotatable within the driving-member. The rollers each bear on a spring-pressed disc, a number of which are mounted in the driving- member. The Provisional Specification describes also a construction in which the surface of the grinding-wheel is convex instead of, or in addition to, the block 27. The eccentricity of the driving- member may be varied by cranks, cams, &c. instead of by the eccentric sleeve. Specifications 201,980, [Class 106 (ii), Dynamometers], and 201,981 are referred to.
