Description

c. J. WALKER & J. A. HORTON.
Brush.
No. 205,774. Patented July 9,1878.
MEN-r01 5 6%W/ (WM w Jaw/Mid Ja WITN E5555 MPTERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPNER WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. XVALKER AND JAMES A. HORTON, OF BOSTON, MASS, ASSlGNOR-S TO THE EAGLE METALLIC BRUSH COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,774, dated July 9, 1878; application filed March 20, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES J. \VALKER and JAMES A. HORTON, both of Boston, in
the county of Suffolk and State of Massa' substance or fabric, the sheet being afterward.
made fast to a back or handle, the whole constituting a brush.
It consists in uniting the wire-holding sheet to the back or handle by means of an oval rin having slender tacks upon its under side. These tacks pass through the margin of the rubber sheet and into the wood of the brushback, and thus hold the sheet and the oval ornamental ring in place, constituting a Very cheap and durable fastening.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the brush looking at the tooth or under side of it. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the holding-ring. Fig. 4is
Y a section of the holding-ring, showing one of the tacks.
Let H represent the brush back or handle, which we make of any desired size, shape, style, and material. The rubber sheet K is provided with wire teeth in the usual manner,
and has a sheet-metal backing-piece, L, Fig. 2; but this sheet metal may be omitted, if desired. M is a metal ring made in an oval form. (See Fig. 3.) The form of the section of this ring is shown at Fig. 4. This metal ring M has soldered or otherwise attached to its under surface a series of tacks, T T, Fig. 3. One of these tacks, T, is shown at Fig. 4 fastened to the under side of the ring M.
In use, this ring M embraces the margin of the rubber sheet K in such a manner that the tacks T T, 850., will pass through the said margin, and thence into the body of the brushback; and when the said ring is pressed firmly down it makes a complete fastening for the rubber sheet K, and also forms an ornamental border for the same.
Having now described the construction and operation of our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is the following:
In a metal-toothed brush, the ring M, having tacks T T, &c., in combination with the rubber sheet K and brush-back H, all serving together, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
