or the drum may be driven in an opposite direction, at will. Means -is provided for vautomatically discharging .the burned or dried material from the kiln when the latter is rotated in such oppor site direction and the closure I5 is opened. Such` mans preferably consists in spiral scooplike blades 28 on the interior of the body portion I and the end I of the drum and terminating at the discharge opening in said end 'l as shown clearly in Figure 3. Obviously, due to thel spiral and scoop-like form of the blades, they will scoop up thematerial andconvey it toward the discharge opening inthe end I when the drum is rotatedvin one direction, and dueto the conical form of the end 1, the blades converge at this endvand provide for travel toward the discharge opening through the action of gravity as well as due to the feeding action of the spiral blades. On the other hand, driving of the drum in the reverse direction will result in merely mixing or stirring the contents of the drum, the blades 28 keepingthe material or contents in the body portion '5 and` end 6 or away'from the discharge opening and the end l in which said discharge opening is provided.
As shown in Figure 5, the drum may be formed in two longitudinal sections consisting of a largey main section29 and a smaller section l3|ldetach- .ably joined or bolted together as at 3l. In such case, the charging opening and its closure will be unnecessary, the section 30 of the drum being removable for charging purposes. With such construction, the driving mechanism may be operatively connected with the drum by providing the latter with a gear 22a at the small end of the end portion 6 of the drum, the shaft 2l being suitably geared and operatively connected with this gear 22a. Otherwise, the construction of the drum shown in Figure5 will correspond to that of the drum shown in the other views and like a time. Also, with the use of thepresent invention, the material to be burned or dried'is readily subjected to a fixed heat for a denite time, the temperature `being controlled by controlling the discharge of hot gasesor products of combustion from the kiln. A particular feature of the invention is that it is not necessary to permit any ame' to enter the drum or to get the heat by using ilre on the outside of the drum, for the reason that, when desirable, the heat may be furnished by hot gases which are generated in a furnace separate from the drum and conducted to the latter. On the other hand, when desirable, asin the case of `drying materials which will not be injured by extensive heat ory by the effect of a direct flame, the heat may be generated within the drum itself by electricity and/or other heat producing means.

What I claim as new is:
l. A rotary kiln of the character described comprising a drum mounted for rotation about 'a horizontal axis and having` a conical end provided with an axial material discharge opening,
a pipe projecting axially through said conical end of the drum in spaced relation to the wall of said material discharge opening for conducting hot gases and products of combustion from the drum,
a manually openable closure for'said material discharge opening, and a stationary hollow shaft upon which the other end of said drum is Journaled, said last-named shaft being adapted for connectlonwith a` source of hotgases or products of combustion whereby the latter are introduced into said drum.
2. A rotary kiln of the character described comprising a drum mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis and having a conical end provided with anv axial material discharge opening, a discharge pipe` projecting axially through said conical end of the drum in spaced relation to the wall of said material discharge opening for conducting hot gases and products of combustion from the drum, a manually openable closure for said material discharge opening, and a stationary hollow shaft upon which the other end of said drum ls journaled, said last-named shaft being adapted for connection with a source of hot gases or products of combustion whereby the latter are introduced into said drum, said closure `f being threaded on said discharge pipe.

A rotary kiln of the character described comprising a drum mounted, for rotation about a horizontal axis and having a conical end provided with an axial material discharge opening, a pipe projecting axially through said conical end of the drum in spaced relation to the wall of said material discharge opening for conducting hot gases and products of combustion from the drum, a manually openable closure for said material discharge opening, a stationary hollow shaft upon which the other end of said drum is journaled,
said last-named shaft being adapted for connection with a source of hot gases or products of combustion whereby the `latter are introduced into said drum, means for driving said drum in opposite directions, and spiral scoop-like blades on the interior of said drum for automatically discharging the material from the -drum when the latter is rotated in one direction and the closure is opened.

A rotary kiln of the character described comprising a drum mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis and having a conical end provided with an axial material discharge opening, .a pipe projecting axially through said conical end of the drum in spaced relation to the wall of 'said material discharge opening for conducting hot gases and products of combustion from the drum. a manually openable closure for said material discharge opening, a stationary hollow shaft upon which the other end of said drum is Journaled, said last-named shaft being adapted for connection with a source `of hot gases or productsr of combustion whereby the vlatter are introduced into said drum, and means for manually controlling the discharge of hot gases or products of combustion from said drum.
5.1A rotary kiln of the character described comprising a drum mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis and having a conical end provided with an axial material discharge opening, a-discharge pipe projecting axially through said conical end of the drum in spaced relation to the wall of said material discharge 'opening for conductingl hot gases and products of combustion from the drum, a manually openable closure for said material discharge opening, a stationary hollow shaft upon which the other end of said drum is journaled, said last-named shaft being adapted for connection with a source of hot gases or products of combustion whereby the latter are introduced into said drum, means for manually controlling the discharge of hot gases `or products of combustion from vsaid drum, said last-named means comprising a conduit connected to said discharge pipe, and a shut-off valve in said conduit.

A rotary kiln of the character described comprising a drum mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis and having a conical end pro- 'drum is journaled, said last-named shaft being ladapted for connection with a source of hot gases or products of combustion whereby the latter are introduced into said drum, means for manually controlling the discharge of hot gases or products of combustion from said drum. said last-named means comprising a conduit connected to said discharge pipe. a shut-oil valve in said conduit, said discharge pipe and said closure being arranged to rotate with the drum, and a swivel connection between said conduit and said discharge pipe.
