This invention relates to razors, blade holders and razor blades, and more particularly to razors and blades of the safety type, and is an improvement of applicants invention patented July 19,

A primary object of this invention is to provide a blade with a non-flexible center portion, so that the flexing strain is borne by the side sections of the blade, thus holding rmly the cutting edges of the blade, thereby controlling the fineness of the cut or shave.
Another object of this invention is to provide a blade so constructed that same may be flexed in either direction thus possessing superior strength and resilience.
A further object is to provide a blade having an opening or slot at about the center portion thereof, thus dividing the blade into two side sections held together by bridge portions of a re-enforced 2o nature, thus minimizing breakage possibilities of same.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a blade having an opening or slot at about its center portion, thereby dividing the blade into 25 two side sections held together by bridge portions, the inner end portions of said sections and the bridge portions being of a heavier thickness than the rest of the side sections, so that when the side sections are being flexed, the inner sections may 30 remain firm, thus eliminating vibration of the cutting edges.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a blade having its center portion of a heavier thickness than the side sections of same, so that the exing strain is borne by the side sections, and, in addition thereto, said heavier portion is also forming the guiding means for positioning said blade in its proper position when being placed within a holder for shaving purposes. 40 A still further object is to provide a blade so constructed that the flexing strain is borne mainly by the side sections, thereby obtaining a rm and steady cutting edge of the blade.
Yet a further object is to provide a safety razor wherein although the handle, plate and cover are secured to each other in a manner so as to provide a one-piece holder, yet the flexing of the blademay be controlled and the edges thereof move freely and be tilted.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a razor wherein although the handle and associated parts are secured to each other, yet the blade may move freely therein and be readily 55 .adjusted, and the edges thereof may move freely and be tilted to any angle desired, thus varying the neness of the cut or shave.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a razor wherein the holder and blade are each provided with gauge portions so that the positioning of the blade within the holder may thus be controlled.
A still further object is to provide a blade holder consisting of a unit including means for receiving a blade, and a member provided with suitable means for engaging and exing the blade, so as to adjust the cutting edges to any desired position without affecting or separating the portions of the holder.
All of the above objects will be seen to be directed towards providing a practical shaving device, a blade that is useful and durable, simple in construction, economical in cost of manufacture, adaptable for use with various types of holders, therefore practical and economical for the consumer.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear from the description thereof to follow, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is an assembled view of the razor and blade, embodying my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the blade holder;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified guard plate upon which the blade is adapted to rest;

Referring to the drawing; (Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 9) 5 indicates a handle secured to opening 6 of plate l, said plate l is provided with a depressed portion or recess 8, said recess is provided with a groove or channel portion 9, a movable member or carrier I is positioned within said groove 9, said carrier is provided with an extension I l positioned within slot I2 of plate 1. The upper portion of the handle is also slotted in a manner to correspond with the slot I2 to an extent suicient to permit the downward movement of the carrier l0. The center portion I4 of carrier I0 is positioned Within the hollow of the handle 5 and is provided with a screw threaded section. The open end portion of the handle 5 is covered with a knob or cover I6. The end portion of wall I'l of said cover is bent, wedged Yor pressed into a groove of the handle 5 as at I8, thus securing the cover to said handle and permitting the rotation of said cover. The cover I6 is provided with a screw threaded section I9, engaging the screw threaded section of portion I4, so that upon the rotation of the knob or cover I6, the portion I4 and carrier I0 will move longitudinally7 of the handle 5.
A cover plate 2| is suitably secured to plate l, for example, by means of lugs 22, which may be bent, wedged or squeezed as at 23, leaving a space or front opening 24, (by means of lugs 25 or any other suitable means) so that a blade may be inserted therein. The rear end section of said space or opening is provided with an extension, lug or bent portion 26 which acts as a stop or gauge for the blade to hold same in position within said opening 28, so that when the holder is held with the opening 28 upward, a blade may be safely inserted therein, whereas a turn of the holderbringing opening 28 downward, will bring the blade v from its position for removal from the hol-der.
The modified 'form illustrated in Fig..5, shows the handle 5' (partly broken away)` securedl to a plate ,'l to which a cover ZI' is hingeably connected by suitable hinging means, for example, as at 3l. A suitable locking device comprising, for example, a spring 32 is arranged thereto, so that cover 2l may be opened or closed for the purpose of placing or removing a blade. The locking member 32 is secured to the cover so that when the hol-der is closed, said locking member engages the plate at 33, thus holding said cover and the blade in position.
With particular reference to Figs. 6, 7 and 8, the kind of safety razor blades used at present for shaving, for example, the kind known as Probak,
. Gillette, Segal or other similar types, are usually Such bridge portions are much too weak to bear the strain caused by the vflexing of the blade. Furthermore, because of the longitudinal slot in 'such blades, the center portions of the side sections are without the necessary support. Thus, while shaving, the cutting edge vibrates and jumps, cutting the hairs not at their base but away from the skin, so that a pull effect is felt. This, of course, is very much objectionable and in many instances makes the blade useless for proper shaving purposes, causing irritation and sometimes leaving a marked face to the one desiring a clean and smooth shave. Because .of such experience, applicant, whose record will prove that he has been engaged in research work for many years, has spent quite some time in extensive and costly experiments and research work until he has finally invented a blade that, although a slot may be formed therein, yet the removal of the material by forming such slot will not affect the side sections, therefore eliminating vibration of the cutting edge while shaving; nor will it cause the bridge sections to snap or break.
Not only that, but furthermore, according to applicants present invention, the bridge sections are being re-enforced so that ordinary snap or breakage by reason of fiexing the blade while tightening the holder, is being entirely eliminated.
The blade herein referred to is illustrated by numeral 35 and is of the usual thickness, but the novel feature of applicants invention, (which applicant is hereby desirous of pointing out) consists of the fact that the strip (from which the blade 35 is made) is provided with a slightly heavier center section longitudinally thereof so that the center portion 36 of blade 35 is -of a heavier gauge or thickness than the side sections 39, thus increasing the strength and life of the blade considerably. A slot 3l may be formed Within such heavier center portion so that the edge 38 of said slot 3l may be held rigidly in its place. In fact, the entire center section A, because of its heavier thickness in comparison with that of the side sections 39 will not flex cross-sectionally to an effective extent, but the flexing strain will be overthrown to and borne by the side sections 39 as at B (see Fig. 8).
Of course, it is immaterial whether the edge 38 is of straight or fancy cut, as long as it is within and a portion of the heavier center section. The side sections 39 will, in such a case, be apt to ex more readily and easier than the center section. Of course, the thickness may be decided upon when making the strip of steel from which the blade is made. After all, the thickness of the center portion is not so very much greater or heavier than that of the side sections and a1-l though because of its narrower width such heavier center portion will not flex cross-sectionally to such an extent as will the side sections, yet, when in a long strip, it will ex longitudinally to an extentsuiiicient to be rolled into a coil, so that the blade chopped o-if from such strip or coil will not be brittle and may, notwithstanding the strain of the heavier center portion, be flexed in either direction thereby minimizing breakage possibilities (which is a common occurrence with blades of the ordinary type). Thuskapplicants present invention is solving the problem of vthe safety razor blade in a practical manner. The blade 35 is at its center portion provided with a bead, extension or projection 4 I. The movable member or carrier I6 is provided rwith a groove 42, adapted to receive the projection 4I so that when shaving is desired, knob or cover I6 is rotated until carrier I6 is` brought into its position flush or even with the surface of the recess 8. Then the blade is inserted as aforesaid; the center portion 36 ts within said recess 8 (so that in addition to its important function as above explained, it also acts as a guide, so that the blade may be properly positioned within the holder). The projection 4I will then nd itself positioned within the groove 42 of carrier ID, so that when the knob I6 will be rotated in the proper direction; the carrier I0 will move upward carrying or pressing the center portion 36. `The end sections 44 will be held against the end portions 45 of cover plate 2|. Thus the sections 39 will flex and because of the radius of the comb or teeth section 46, and, because of the space between edge 45 and comb portion 46, the edge portions 44 will move freely and tilt until the desired angle is obtained. Of course, by turning the knob in either direction, such tilting may be controlled and adjusted to suit the individuals tenderness of the skin or roughness of the beard. Thus a practical shaving instrument is obtained. It is understood Vthat various changes in the end edges of portion 36 will not be visible.

, knob may be provided with an extension engaging directly the body of the carrier, in a screw threaded connection; or the handle, instead of being permanently secured to the plate l, may be detachably secured thereto so that it may be taken apart whenever desired.
VIt Will be seen from Fig. 3 that the recess 8 may be' eliminated,'and that bead or extension 4I of the blade 35 and groove 42 of the carrier I!! may be ,the suicient means for guiding and holding Athe blade whenpositioned within the holder for shaving purposes. In such a case the thickness of the end section ofthe re-enforced center portion -36 may be gradually reduced until it will meet 'Y the thickness of the side sections 39, so that the Of course; for that matter, if desired, the beads 4l may be eliminated, especially when an opening is `made in the blade with a view of using it in connection with the present type holders. lIt
. really does not matter how the re-enforced center portion is made, so long as it answers the purpose of overthrcwing the flexing strain upon the side sections 39, and minimizes the flexing possibilities of the center portion, thereby preventing breakage of such center portion or center sections, or may eliminate vibration of the cutting edge. Then and in such oase, such structure will be or rather is within the spirit of this invention. As a matter of fact, applicant realizes and is aware of .the fact that various changes may be resorted to in the course of manufacturing with the object in View of producing a blade which may answer the purpose of applicants invention. Of course, such a blade would naturally be within the spirit of applicants present invention.
Applicant has shown certain preferred forms in order to explain and show the novelty of his invention; but by showing such preferred structure I do not, by any means, limit myself to this structure, nor to the terms used in describing same.'
Various suggestions and changes of structure or terms may be resorted to, and I desire it to be understood that I have same inmind when describing this invention, and seek protection by Letters Patent, and although I have mentioned in describing of what materials certain parts may be made, how they may be shaped or styled and how-they may be assembled, yet I desire it to be understood that this structure or parts thereof may be made of any suitable material and in any desirable style or shape and assembled in any suitable manner, and that various changes in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention.
I claim:
1. A one-piece razor holder comprising a handle, a-plate and a cover, said plate provided with a recess adapted to receive a portion of a blade, thus holding same against angular displacement, said recess provided with a groove, a movable member for engaging said blade positioned in said groove, and rotatable means associated with said holder adapted to exert a pressure against a portion oi said member, moving same longitudinally of said handle, thus flexing said blade and tilting the edges of same.
2. A device forming a razor blade holder comprising. a handle and a top-unit, said top-unit including upper and lower sections, said lower section being providedwith a recess, a movable bar seated within said recess, at least a portion of the upper section of said bar being grooved, a blade positioned within said top-unit, said blade provided with a projection adapted to intert with the groove of said bar thus being held against angular displacement.
1' 3. 4A device forming a razor blade holder comprising a handle and a top-unit, said top-unit including upper and lower sections, said lower section being provided with a depressedportion, a Imovable bar adapted to rest within said depressed portion, said bar provided with a recess, a iexible blade' positioned within said top-unit, said blade provided with a projection, the recessed portion of Asaid bar adapted to engage said projection thus holding said blade against angular displacement, said handle being provided with rotatable means co-operating withl a portion of said bar for moving same longitudinally of said handle thus flexing said blade thereby tilting the edges of same.
4. A device forming a razor blade holder including a handle and a top-unit, said top-unit including upper and lower sections, said sections being so arranged as to provide means for supporting a blade therebetween, a movable member associated with said top-unit, said lower section provided with means forming a seat vfor at least a portion of said member, the upper section of said member provided with a cut-out portion adapted to intert with a portion of said blade thus holding the latter against angular displacement, means within said device for moving said member longitudinally of said handle and adjusting said blade for shaving purposes.
5. A razor blade holder comprising a handle and a top-unit, said top-unit provided with means adapted to support a blade, the portion of said top-unit below said blade provided with a recess, a movable member positioned within said recess, rotatable means associated with said holder for moving said member longitudinally of said handle, said member provided with a grooved portion adapted to receive a portion of said blade thus holding same against angular displacement and also to flex same thereby tilting the edges thereof.
6. A device forming a razor blade holder including a handle and a top-unit, said top-unit including upper and lower sections, said lsections provided with means for receiving a blade therebetween, a bar located between said sections, a portion of said bar being movably positioned within an opening in said lower section, said bar provided with a grooved portion adapted to support a portion of said blade and means associated with said device for moving said bar longitudinally of said handle thus adjusting said blade for shaving purposes.
7. A holder for razor blades comprising a handle and a top-unit, said top-unit including upper and lower sections hingeably securely to each other, said lower section provided with a recess, a movable member positioned withinsaid recess, said member provided with a grooved section adapted to engage a portion of a blade supported by said top-unit, said holder provided with means for moving said member longitudinally of said handle thereby flexing said blade so that a rigid cutting edge for shaving purposes may thus be provided.
8. A holder for razor blades comprising a handle and a top-unit, said top-unit including upper and lower sections, said sections provided with means adapted to receive a blade therebetween, a bar located between said sections, said bar provided with a grooved portion adapted to support a portion of said blade, and means associated with said handle adapted to move said bar longitudinally of said handle.

As a new article of manufacture, an integral razor blade made of a strip of spring steel and vcomprising longitudinal flexible side sections and a relatively thicker longitudinal center portion of a heavier gauge than that of the side sections, the longitudinal end portions of said side sections being of such a thickness as to-permit the ilexing of said end portions in either direction, transversely or longitudinally, at least one of said longitudinal end portions being provided with a sharpened edge, said center portion being of such thickness that it is flexible longitudinally of the blade but is substantially non-flexible transversely of the blade, whereby flexing strain cross-sectionally of the blade is borne substantially entirely by said side sections of the blade.
l0. A blade according to the structure as set forth in claim 9, wherein the longitudinal center portion is provided with an aperture, thereby dividing the blade into-two sections held togetherA by reinforced bridge portions.
11. As a new article of manufacture, an integral razor blade made of a strip of spring steel and comprising longitudinal side sections and a relatively thicker longitudinal Vcenter portion of a heavier gauge than that of the side sections, said side sections being of approximately uniform thickness throughout and flexible in either direction, transversely or longitudinally, at least one of said side sections being provided with a sharpened edge, said center portion being of such thickness that it isiiexible longitudinally of the blade but is substantially non-flexible transversely of the blade, whereby flexing strain crosssectionally of the blade is borne substantially entirely by said side sections of the blade.
12. A blade according to the structure as set forth in claim 1l, wherein the longitudinal center portion is provided with an aperture, thereby dividing the blade into two sections held together by reinforced bridge portions.
13. As a new article of manufacture, an integral razor bladel made of a strip of spring steel and comprising a longitudinal flexible side section and a. relatively thicker longitudinal portion of a gauge heavier than that of the side section, the longitudinal end portion of said side section being of such a thickness as to permit the flexing of same in either direction, transversely or longitudinally, said end portion being provided with a sharpened edge, said thicker portion being of such a gauge that it is fiexib-le longitudinally of the blade but is non-flexible or substantially so transversely of the blade, whereby flexing strain cross-sectionally of the blade is borne substantially entirely by said side section. y

As a new article of manufacture, an integral razor blade made of a strip of spring steel and comprising longitudinal flexible side sections and a relatively thicker longitudinal center portio-n of a heavier gauge than that of the side sections, the longitudinal end portions of said side sections being of such a thickness as to permit the flexing of said end vportions in either direction, transversely or longitudinally, at least one of said longitudinal end portions being provided with a sharpened edge, said center portion being of such thickness that it is exible longitudinally of the blade but is substantially nonexible transversely of the blade, whereby exing strain cross-sectionally of the blade is borne Asub-'- stantially entirely by said side sections, said lon-` tegral razor blade made of a strip of spring steel and comprising longitudinal flexible side sections and a relatively thicker longitudinal center portion of a heavier gauge than that of the side sections, said blade provided with an opening adapted to interi'it with a portion of a razor blade holder thus holding said blade in selected position, the longitudinal end portions of said side sections being of such a thickness as to permit the flexing of said end portions in either direction, transversely or longitudinally, said longitudinal end portions provided with sharpened edges, said center portion being of such thickness that it is flexible longitudinally of the blade but is substantially non-flexible transversely of the blade, whereby flexing strain cross-sectionally of the blade is borne substantially entirely by said side sections of the blade.
16. A holder for razor blades comprising in combination a handle and a plurality of elements including a guard, a cap and a longitudinal bar positioned between said guard and said cap, said bar provided with a, recessed portion for engaging and guiding a blade when the latter is positioned between said guard and said cap, said handle being provided with means for operating and moving said elements relatively to each other longitudinally of said handle for flexing the blade.

A device forming a razor blade holder comprising in combination a handle and a head including a lower section and at least one upper section, said lower section being provided with a cut out portion and with a plurality of comb portions, said upper section being hingeably secure-d to said lower section, said lower section being provided with a movable element having at least a portion thereof positioned within said cut-out portion, said movable element being provided with recessed portion shaped in such a manner that said element may cooperate with a blade so as to hold same in selected position and means within said handle for moving said element longitudinally of said handle and adjusting said blade for shaving purposes,

A device forming a razor blade holder comprising in combination a handle and a head including a lower section and an upper section hingeably secured to each other, one of said sections provided with a guard portion, said lower section being provided with a cut-out portion and with a movable member having a portion thereof positioned within said cut-out portion, said member being provided with at least one cut-out portion shaped in a manner so that the latter may cooperate with a blade supported by said device, said device provided with means for moving said member longitudinally of said handle and adjusting said blade for shaving purposes.
19. A device forming a razor blade holder comprising a handle and a head provided with means for supporting a blade therein, said head including upper and lower sections, a movable member associated with said head, at least one of said sections provided with at least one comb portion, said lower section provided with a cut-out portion adapted to receive a part of said movable member, the upper section of said member provided with a cut-out portion shaped in a manner so that said section mav intert with a portion of adapted to be seated within said cut-out portion,
vsaid member provided with a cut-out portion shaped in such a manner so that the latter may cooperate with a blade holding same against lateral movements, said member being provided with a portion extending within said handle, a rotatable element associated with said handle and adapted to engage said extending portion for the purpose of moving said member longitudinally of said handle and adjusting the blade for shaving 10 purposes.
