2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in windows and has particular reference to a sash construction therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved sash of simple and practical construction wherein the position of an inner member thereof which carries the window pane may be reversed when cleaning said pane so as to avoid the necessity and danger of leaning out of the window or standing upon the sill to accomplish the cleaning operation.
Another object is to provide a locking means for the inner and outer members of the sash which will securely maintain the inner member in its normally closed position and form an effective weather stripping between said members when the same are locked together.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.

Figure l is a vertical sectional view through a window showing outer and inner sashes disposed within the frame of the window in a customary manner and with the outer sash lowered and the inner sash raised.
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevation, partly broken away, of one of the sashes constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged view of one corner of one of the sashes showing, in plan view, the operating means for one of the locking elements employed in connection with the invention.

Referring more particularly to Figure 1, the
numeral 6 indicates generally the frame of a window in which the outer and inner sashes 'l and 8 are slidably mounted for vertical movement in the customary manner, said sashes being substantially alike and constructed in accordance with the features of the present invention.
By reference to Figure 2 it will be seen that each sash comprises outer and inner members 9 and ill of rectangular formation, the members being slightly spaced from each other and the inner member being rotatively mounted within the outer member by means of pivots ll carried by said inner member and engaging the outer member medially of the vertical sides thereof so that the inner member can be rotated about a horizontal axis. The outer face of each of the 5 inner members it] of the two sashes has mounted therein the usual pane of glass H2. The inner marginal edge of the outer sash member 9 is provided therein with a continuous groove or channel l3 and the outer marginal edge of the inner 10 member ID is formed with a similar groove 01' channel l4, said grooves l3 and 14 being in opposed relation when the two sash members are in closed position and arranged in the same plane.
Locking means are provided for releasably re- 15 taining the sash members 9 and ID in their closed positions, and, in accordance with the present in- Vention, said locking means also constitutes a weather stripping which closes the space between said members. Said locking means, in the form 20 illustrated, comprises two angular locking bars l5 each of substantially L-shaped construction, with the short arms of said elements extending along the top and bottom of the sash members and between the same, while the long arms of the 25 two locking elements extend along the vertical sides of said members. When each of the locking bars 15 is in its releasing position, the same is entirely recessed within the groove I3 of the outer sash member 9, but when said bar is in 30 its locked position it is partially projected from said groove and into the groove M in the inner sash member, as illustrated clearly in Figure 5. When so positioned, the locking bar closes the space between the inner and outer sash mem- 35 bers and, by reason of its engagement in the groove I4, prevents the inner member from r0- tating about its pivots it until the bar is again wholly withdrawn into the groove 13, whereupon said inner member may be rotated to reverse its 40 position so that the normal outer surface of the pane of glass l2 may be turned inwardly and be thus conveniently cleaned from the interior of the room in which the window is located.
Each of the locking bars I5 is provided with an 5 operating means utilized to adjust said bar to its locking and releasing positions and said means is conveniently located and disposed within a recess it formed in the corner of the outer sash member 9 contiguous to the angle of the associated lock- 5 ing bar, said recess also communicating with the groove l3. At the juncture of the two arms of each of the locking bars a headed pin I1 is threaded into an aperture in said bar with said pin disposed entirely within the recess I6. Associated 55 with said pin is an operating slide l8 having a socket I9 at one end thereof which engages over the head of said pin I! and said slide is also normally disposed within said recess l6 with its opposite end abutting the end wall of the recess so as to retain the locking bar l5 in its operative position, as shown in Figure 5. Intermediate its ends the slide i8 is provided with a ring or handle 20 by means of which said slide may be pulled laterally outward to the dotted line position in Figure 5 preparatory to exerting a pull upon said slide away from the inner sash member as when it is desired to withdraw the locking bar from the groove Hi. When this operation has been accomplished with each of the slides IS the two locking bars l5 will be withdrawn from the groove i l of the inner member is and the latter will then be free to swing about its axis. After the window panes l2 have been cleaned the inner member is may be restored to its position in vertical alignment with the Outer member I and when the grooves l3 and M are aligned, a reversal of the operation just described of the two slides l8 will again cause the locking cars to project into the groove M and thus lock the two members of the sash together.
What is claimed is:
1. In a window, a sash comprising outer and inner members one of which has a recess therein, means to support one of said members for rotative movement relative to the other, a locking element recessed in a marginal edge of one of said mem.
bers and operable to project into a marginal edge of the other member to lock said members together, operating means for said locking element including a pin projecting from the latter into said recess, and a slide disposed in said recess and engageable with said pin, said slide contacting an end of said recess to retain said locking element in locking position and being movable to a position outside said recess for adjustment in a linear direction to move said locking element in its releasing position.
2. In a window, a sash comprising two members one of which is provided with a recess, and one being arranged within the other in spaced relation, means to support the inner member for rotative movement relative to the outer member, said members having opposed grooves formed in and 1 extending about their inner adjacent margins, two
independently operable locking bars disposed within the groove of one of said members and movable to partially projected positions relative thereto so as to engage in the groove of the other sash member, operating means for each of said locking bars, said means including a pin projecting from the bar into said recess, and a slide disposed in said recess and engageable with said pin, said slide contacting an end of said recess to retain said locking element in looking position and being movable to a position outside said recess for adjustment in a linear direction to move said locking element to its releasing position.
