2 claims.
This invention relates to tubular lantern constructions and has for its object to provide novel bracing means between the font and one of the lantern tubes and between the dome and both of the lantern tubes so as to increase the strength, sturdiness and rigidity of the entire lantern construction.
Another object of this invention is to combine the novel bracing means with the lantern bale suspension and the globe lifting means.
These and other objects and attendant advantages will become more readily apparent from the detailed description of the invention which follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Y Figure 1 is a front elevation of a tubular lantern embodying my novel bracing means.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional View taken Yon the line 25u-2x of Figure 1 illustrating in a bottom plan View one of the bracing members and its connection between the tube and the dome of the lantern.
Figure 3 is a detail side elevation of the dome of the lantern.
Figure 4 is a detail vertical sectional view of the brace between one of the tubes of the lantern and the font thereof, the section being taken on the line lla-4:1: of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line tim-5.1: of Figure 4 illustrating a top plan view of the brace between one of the tubes and the font of the lantern.
In the several figures of the drawing like reference numerals indicate like parts.
- The tubular lantern construction forming the subject matter of my present invention comprises the font I including its burner 2 and the tubes 3, 3 extending from the burner over the font and up to the dome 4. A lantern globe 5 is supported on a base 6 which surrounds the burner and is pivotally connected to the crank 1 so that on the swinging of the crank by means of its handle 8 in its movement from the full line position to the dotted line position in Figure 4, the base 6 with the lantern globe is raised above the burner 2 to permit the lighting thereof.
One end of the crank is pivotally supported on one of the tubes 3 of the lantern on one side of the globe 5Y and the other end is pivotally supported in the bearing 9 of the bracing member I0 which is fastened to the other of the tubes 3 of the lantern and the top of the font I thereof as will hereinafter appear. The bracing member I0 comprises 'a substantially vertical member provided with outwardly spreading and an.-
(Cl. v2340--27 gularly extending feet II, II which straddle the horizontal portion of the tube 3 as illustrated in Figure 4. The bottom of the feet of the bracing member are soldered or otherwise fastened to the top of the font I so as to locate this member between the tube 3 and the globe supporting base 6 and support the crank I to permit the handle 8 thereof to swing between the globe 5 and tube 3.
The upper portion of the bracing member has a pair of flanges I2, I2 bent outwardly therefrom. These flanges engagevthe sides of the' tube 3 and are soldered or otherwise suitably fastened thereto. The bracing member I0 thus braces the tube 3 on the font I from opposite sides and rigidly anchors the tube to the font in addition to the direct attachment of its horizontal portion to the font. `The bracing member I0 in bracing one of the tubes 3 thus serves to keep both of the tubes from being twisted off the font and its burner when lateral pressure is applied to the tubes or the dome supported by them.
'I'he bearing `9 is formed in the side of the bracing member and holds the crank rotatablyv supported therein. To one side of the bearing is provided the locking flange I4 which projects upwardly from the bracing member and is rounded toward the tube 3 to provide an elongated horizontally extending latch over which the shank of the handle 8 must be forced when moving the handle from the full line to the dottedline position in Figure 4 for the purpose of raising the lantern globe. The rounded latch I4 extends angularly from the bearing 9 so that its increased thickness and elongated round surface permits the shank of the handle 8 to gradually and easily slide thereover without causing any appreciable wear von either the latch or the shank.
The brace between the tubes 3 and the dome 4 of the lantern is provided in the formation and attachment of the eyes it, I6 which support the bail I1 of the lantern. These eyes are made up in the form of a closed wire loop which are soldered to the tubes 3 so as to project angularly therefrom. The parallel free ends of these loops project horizontally thru the tubes 3 into the dome 4 at the bottom thereof and are bent up- Y wardly on the inside thereof to hold the ends anchored thereto either with or without further fastening means. In this way the bottom of the dome is anchored Vto the tubes 3, 3 intermediate PATENT OFFICE;
the ends thereof and keeps the dome from turnf The bracing of one of the tubes on the font and the bracing between the dome and both of the tubes, as above described, secures for the lantern construction increased rigidity and ruggedness which keeps the lantern in perfect working condition 'for a much longer period than has heretofore been possible with this type of lantern.
I claim:
1. In a tubular lantern, the combination of the lantern frame comprising a font `and air tubes secured thereto with the air tubes extending horizontally fromV the center portion of the font over the top thereof and then upwardly on the outside of the font, a lever mounted to swing fromV a substantially vertical position into a substantially horizontal position for lifting the globe of the lantern between said air tubes, a bi-furcated upright adapted to straddle the horizontal portion of one of said air tubes and fastened to said font on opposite sides of said tube suitably spaced therefrom to provide oppositely extending bracing members at the bottom of said upright, a pair of parallel vertically arranged flanges formed on said upright and extending outwardly therefrom so as to embrace and be fastened to oppo site sides of the vertical portion of said air tube at a point above the horizontal portion of said tube, a locking latch at the top of said upright and extending horizontally and substantially at right angles to said air tube and the upright so asto have said lever slide over said locking latch and engage under it substantially the full length thereof. Y
2.v In a tubular lantern the combination as set .forth in claim 1 in which said locking latch is formed by a substantially semi-cylindrical horizontally extending ridge of gradually increasing width to provide a large bearing surface for said handle to slide thereover and engage thereunder.
